These were, if memory serves, purchased by the Chinese in the US (they seem to

You have a point regarding the lonely & pathetic perhaps, and of keeping the
list, on beam, with questions focused on physics and mathematics. However, as
Leon Trotsky quipped, "You may not be interested in war, but War is interested
in you!" Thus, the real world interfered with the lives of scientists such as
Heisenberg, Turing, Fermi & Einstein. Humans are not only gestated to have
cerebrums, but amygdalas as well. ;-D

Re: D-Wave's 5000 qubit computer

2020-10-01 Thread spudboy100 via Everything List
How do you rate this D-Wave claim as it's know that entanglements yield no
successful operations? The company produces entanglements, but little 1/0's. I
hold that when IBM or Honeywell claims 48 qubits per sec, it is not an empty
claim? Maybe I am wrong, but DWave's qubits are empty operations apparently. It
obviously produces some successful operations otherwise no customers (NASA?).
Also, there is the claim by some that when we break 100 qubits per sec, things
in the real world start looking like The Jetsons or Trek. The impact on
engineering and chemistry, as it were?

Quantum Computers

2020-10-01 Thread John Clark
In yesterday's issue of the journal Nature tthere is an article about a new
device that could fit inside a bacterium and can measure changes in
temperature that are extraordinarily tiny and do so with enormous speed.

Bolometer operating at the threshold for circuit quantum electrodynamics

This could be very important to anyone who wants to make a quantum computer
because you could use it to measure the energy of a Qubit, and that is the
most fundamental thing quantum computers do. Normally this is done by
measuring the voltage induced by the Qubit, but this requires a lot of
large amplification circuitry which makes scaling up to more Qubits very
difficult, and the circuitry produces significant amounts of quantum noise.
But this new device requires no additional circuitry, is virtually noise
free, is much smaller, and it needs six orders of magnitude less energy to
run. The device is primarily made from a tiny fleck of Graphene, a 2D sheet
of Carbon atoms.
