If I do rpm -q --whatprovides gnomecc, I get :- no package provides

vCalendar is an older standard created by an industry consortium.
iCalendar is the current IETF standard that is based on it. iCalendar is
basically vCalendar 2.0 (and if you look at your Evo calendar.ics file,
you'll see that the first line is BEGIN:VCALENDAR and a few lines down
is VERSION:2.0.) The basic format is defined by RFC 2445, and RFCs
2446 and 2447 describe the additions for doing email-based scheduling.

Outbreak/Expunge. Having the calendaring integrated with
e-mail and being able to sync with Palm are also
important. For a client, I wish I could push Evo, but
most of our users are on Windows...

The IETF calendaring and scheduling working group is working on a
standard called CAP (Calendar Access Protocol), which will be the open
standard for calendar servers. But it's not progressing very quickly so
there aren't going to be clients and servers that support it any time
soon. Until then, there really isn't much in the way of open standards
 for calendaring.

The only calendar server I know of that has Windows, Linux, and web
clients is Exchange. If you don't mind making at least the Linux users
use the web interface then there are more options. SuSE's email server
has a web-based calendar system, as does Sun ONE (formerly iPlanet). I'm
not sure about what sort of functionality Steltor and MeetingMaker have.
There are also a handful of free web-based systems in various states of
 completion (phpGroupWare, TUTOS).

Well you are right. Today there are very few Linux viruses (but they

Hi Matthias,
Virii is the plural of virus (I bet that was obvious :). I know a
lot of people use viruses, so it may be acceptable when talking about
a computer virus. I also thought I'd point out a few others, since
you're nice enough to ask about virus. Didnt and whats require
apostrophes, since they are contractions. In other words, didn't and

Like I said, I think the 1.1 code treats password failure differently,
then again i'm not sure, its not always easy to tell with pop. I find
the behaviour pretty annoying too. One problem is that an isp might
leave the port open, so we can successfully connect, and then just give
us a 'bad password error - we're busy' response, which we can't parse
any other way as 'bad password', and ask for another one.

Yes, I think that's the kind of error message I got. Can't remember for

[Evolution] Expunge just deleted messages shown in a vFolder

2002-06-05 Thread Dan Hensley

When I read my e-mail, I leave deleted messages shown. I typically will
expunge at the end of the day, in case I need to refer back to a deleted
message.

What I'm wondering is if anyone has considered allowing the capability
of expunging just the deleted messages shown in a particular vFolder.
Currently (at least in 1.0.5) when you expunge while viewing a vFolder,
it expunges the folder (folders?) in which the messages are stored.

[Evolution] OT: Setting up a local mail server

2002-06-03 Thread Dan Hensley

The reason I'm asking on this list is that I know there are some who
have mentioned previously doing this. I've been researching for a while
now, and I still have a lot of questions, so I was wondering if someone
could give me some pointers, links to a HOWTO, etc. I'm having a hard
time finding information that concisely and clearly explains how all the
pieces fit together.

I have 3 different POP accounts that I regularly check. I'd like to
turn my machine into a local server for these accounts so I can access
e-mail from anywhere on my local network and also through my firewall
for when I'm out of town.

I believe what I need to do is set up an IMAP server and use fetchmail
to download the POP e-mails to the IMAP server. I believe I need some
kind of mail agent to take the e-mail downloaded by fetchmail and put it
in the right place for the IMAP server.

What I've done so far is compile and install courier-imap. I set up 3
virtual users and verified that the server works. That's it so far.
I've been reading fetchmail, maildrop, and qmail documentation as well.

If anyone could give me some pointers I'd appreciate it.

Subject: [Evolution] how to do a backtrace?
Date: 11 Apr 2002 11:08:50 +0800

Hi can someone post the details of how to do a backtrace? I get a crash
every time I try and send an email from one system. The fault is self
caused, but whilst I fixed this system, there's still something wrong
with the other.

Thanks,

PINE has this feature too. It's infinitely useful. I find it hard to
believe that most mail programs don't offer it.

 Definately should be considered.

This feature request has been discussed on the list before. You might
want to try searching previous posts to find out what the status is.

You could try disabling and enabling the IMAP account in Tools/Mail

[Evolution] Could Ximian please respond? - HTML-only e-mails : reply does notindent]

2002-02-25 Thread Dan Hensley

This is my 3rd time sending this e-mail to the list. I've received a
few responses, but none from Ximian (nothing on my bug report, #16081,
as well), and none that address my specific bug. I continually run
across this, because Netscape mail sends text/html only if you specify
that Recipient likes HTML in the addressbook.

The problem manifests itself when I receive e-mail with only text/html
and no text/plain. When I hit Reply, the quoted text is shown in gray
with no indentation or quotation characters. My default send format is
Text only, so when I reply, it is impossible for the recipient to figure
out what is quoted.

It sure would be nice if Evo could have some consistency in quoted
text. Currently, text only gets a , text/plain + text/html gets
gray indented blocks (which by the way I do not like), and text/html
only gets gray unindented blocks. Would it be so difficult to have the
last type get at least indented blocks?

A few months ago I posted a bugzilla (#16081) about this and also
e-mailed the list.

If I receive an e-mail containing HTML only (i.e. no text/plain), when I
reply to it, the quoted text appears in gray, but is not indented. If I
send this, and it goes out as text/plain (which it will, unless I
explictly specify HTML format, which I usually don't), of course it is
impossible visually to determine what text is quoted and what is not.

In addition, when I reply to this e-mail, the first line of the quoted
text appears on the same line as the tag that says On date, person
wrote:. This is also wrong.

Are these issues something Ximian is planning to fix in the near future?

This is exactly what I see if I compile Evolution with this
patch installed (which by the way cuts the compile time down

This was how I discovered that you can't use the libtool patch

Before doing that though, I'd make a backup of your addressbook.db. I

unfortunately it breaks the compile of things like conduits. I have no

Re: [Evolution] compiling cvs - issues

2001-12-21 Thread dan . hensley

Yes, that's exactly the behavior of the stock gtk+-1.2.10 packages. You
need to either downgrade to 1.2.9, or upgrade to gtk+-1.2.10-ximian or
  gtk+ from CVS.

so essentially I'm screwed and have to wait, since cvs is 2.0 stuff, and
there is no option to download the source code for gtk+-ximian (or red
carpet)... sometimes it almost makes me wish I wasn't running
 slackware. almost.

No, you can just grab the 1.2 tree from CVS. I think the tag is
gtk+-1-2-stable, although I'm not sure. I'd have to check when I
get home. Or one of the Ximian folks can respond with the correct
name.

Not specifically, but in general if Evo is not remembering settings

running. Try doing a killev; oaf-slay before starting up Evo. Beware

By the way, a lot of your questions, particularly the one about spell

below branch of gal? If so, is this documented anywhere? The README
file says nothing about it. It is also out-of-date regarding gtkhtml.

Alternatively, for gal at least, the branch (gal-evolution-1-0-branch)
still has the macros directory, so if in gal you

 You'll get a working dir.

[Evolution] gtkhtml 1.0??

2001-11-29 Thread Dan Hensley

A few days ago I updated the Evolution 1 branch from CVS, and it's
looking for gtkhtml 1.0. However, gtkhtml hasn't updated for a few
days, and it's still at 0.16.1. Is it just that anoncvs hasn't caught
up yet, or is there some disconnect?

[Evolution] Replying to an e-mail doesn't put quote characters in front of text

2001-11-25 Thread Dan Hensley

I noticed this recently. When I reply to an e-mail, quoted text shows
up as gray. However, when I send it (plain text), quote characters are
not placed in front of the quoted text, so it is difficult to see what I
wrote and what was quoted.

Is there a setting I'm missing, or is this a bug? Version 1.0 should
most definitely _not_ ship like this.

Re: [Evolution] calendar dies in evolution rc 2

So what that means is that evolution-calendar hasn't crashed, right?
Either that or the calendar process in gdb isn't the one that Evolution

I used Alt+Tab to switch the keyboard focus to the gdb window but I

Re: [Evolution] Strange, strange bug (maybe)

2001-11-19 Thread Dan Hensley

I know what you are talking about. I submitted bug #4907 about this
when dragging mail. It's been fixed for a while now, but it sounds like
a similar problem exists with Contacts. You should probably submit
another bug report and reference #4907.

What version of Evolution are you using?

with the feeds, reducing the number of items to five, then four, and
trying a couple news feeds I don't use, then removing them again.
Sometime around this point the animation of a dragged item popping back
to its original place (an icon of a sheet of paper streaking across the
screen) started going, about once every three seconds or so. From lower
middle right of the screen (where I had the contact list window open) up
to upper left somewhere - remember, I'm in the Summary pane. I switched
desktop to check something out in Galeon, and the animation sequence
continued, but less frequently, and from approximately center of the
screen to middle upper right. When I came back to evolution and hit 'new
message', it seems to have stopped. I can't reproduce this (at least not
 so far).

Should I even file this as a bug, or should I just file it under things
that happen if I don't sacrifice a black goat to the gods of computing?

[Evolution] Find/Replaces crashes the editor when forwarding a message

2001-11-18 Thread Dan Hensley

I just submitted a bug report, but I thought I'd send it to the list
too.

In Evolution, Find/Replace crashes gnome-gtkhtml-editor. I am using CVS
from about 11/17/01. Here's the scenario:

I have an e-mail that I want to forward. After I click on Forward, I
delete some text. Then I try to replace all of the 's at the beginning
of each line with nothing using Find/Replace. The first time I do it
and select Replace All, it replaces the first one. The second time I do
it, gnome-gtkhtml-editor crashes with the following backtrace:

I don't think this is possible. It's been discussed on the list in the
past, but I guess not recently. I also thought it would be in the FAQ
or README file, but it wasn't. Maybe because they didn't mention that
Evolution is a newsreader, that was sufficient instead of saying it
isn't.

A while ago there was some code in Evo for Newsgroups (it's probably
still in there), but AFAIK no one was really maintaining it. It'll
probably be supported eventually.

[Evolution] UTF-8 in pilot-link???

2001-11-13 Thread Dan Hensley

For the past few days I haven't been able to compile Evolution with
conduit support because of this:

checking if pilot-link handles UTF-8 conversions... no

My question is, how do I get pilot-link to support UTF-8 conversions? I
did a little digging and made a guess that I needed to install libiconv
1.7 (which I did by compiling), and then recompile pilot-link 0.9.5 with
libiconv. However, when I do that I get the following error:

Are there plans to test Evo against the latest gconf, oaf, and bonobo?
gconf 1.0.5+ seems to cause many bad things with Evo, but it's the

PeterW's libtool fix does speed up the compile time considerably, but
Pilot conduits will not be linked correctly with the patch. What will
happen is that when you try to do something with the EAddress component
it will complain of an unresolved symbol. The only way to fix this is
to compile without the libtool fix (which really stinks, because on my
Athlon 1.2G/512MB RAM it takes 1 1/2 hours).

Basically libtool 1.4 sucks rocks when it comes to dependencies.

This is libtools fault mostly, but also
 gnome-config's fault (because
of limitations which pushed the problem into libtool
 i guess).

There's a patch around for libtool 1.4 which is
 supposed to address it
 a little (try the archives).

Most of the time is spend in a stupid shell script
 which attempts to detect
link dependencies, which also blows out the link
 line. ld thankfully doesn't
slow down that much (well at least gnu ld) because
 of it.

  Lo,

When linking something this seems to stick out
 like sore thumb: The link
command line has more than 10 times references to
 libraries like libz,
libdl, libXext, libX11, libSM, etc. The list
really goes on and on and on.

So, could this contribute to the extremely long
 link times I have? And,
where does the mega long link command line and
 duplicate lib references
  come from?

  Bye.

If that's the case, it would be nice if Mailman could e-mail the
original sender to let them know the e-mail bounced. I sure don't
remember getting any indication whatsoever that this happened. But I
suppose that could explain what happened in both of our cases. It sure
wasn't obvious from my standpoint though. It took me a couple of days
to realize what was going on.

If your e-mail bounces for any reason, delivery is automatically
disabled and a warning is sent to the list admin to let him or her know
that your account was disabled due to error(s). This is a feature of
the Mailman mailing list software (see www.list.org) which is designed
to prevent the adminstrator from being swamped with bounce messages,
prevent alias loops, and prevent bounce messages from getting back to
the list. I have been on some mailing lists, run on servers other than
mailman, where tons of bounces or alias loops got back to the lists,
which was extremely annoying. Although this disable feature is not an
ideal solution and sometimes causes confusion, I think it's better than
the potential results of not having it.

Thanks to Miles and Joseph for responding with workarounds for this. It turns out that the 100% CPU is due to gtkhtml being compiled with gconf 1.0.5+. When I recompiled gtkhtml --without-gconf, the full CPU problems went away. I had tried downgrading gconf to 1.0.4 a few times earlier in the week, but it may have been while more things were broken because it didn't work previously.

However, the Calendar still crashes, this time in a different way. I just submitted 13092 about that.

H... I thought I'd killed everything running. Who knows. At any rate, I've re-entered the info. I may start over from scratch anyway since I've probably got old cruft in my ~evolution.

[Evolution] Evolution CVS is STILL majorly broken

2001-10-19 Thread dan . hensley

Evolution has been severely broken for me since last weekend (I'm sending
this from Spruce). I updated from CVS tonight, did a killev, oaf-slay,
kill gconfd, and it still goes into 100% CPU mode in
evolution-executive-summary. So I rebooted, and Evolution came up. So I
thought I'd move my evolution directory out of the way and start fresh to
clear any cruft (late last week, I noticed that Evo wanted to copy some new
files into my directory, after which it crashed the next several times I
tried to start it--Evo is still very bad at handling new files).

When I tried that, I went through the First Time druid. I specifically
unchecked all of the import options. After clicking Finish I noticed a
Pine import dialog show up. Then Evo went into 100% CPU mode, with the
splash screen frozen with nothing displayed. Now rebooting doesn't fix the
problem, and setting the environment variable to bypass the splash screen
doesn't help either. What else can I do to get back up and running?

Another thing I noticed is that Evo doesn't seem to store my Mail Settings
in the evolution directory any more? During one of my iterations I entered
some bogus stuff in the First Time druid. Now even when I move by backup
evolution directory into the right place, my Mail Setting are still the
bogus entry instead of my correct 4 accounts.

On a side note, I'm very curious about the major breakage. Did the
person/people who committed the code that broke everything so severely know
this was going to happen? Surely the most cursory testing before
committing would have revealed the problems, since it seems to have
affected so many people. It seems rather strange that such major breakage
would happen so close to a Release Candidate.

Here's a backtrace of evolution-executive-summary. I ^C in gdb when I go
into 100% CPU mode and then do 'bt' to get this. It seems like there's a
problem in gtkhtml. By the way, I submitted this a week ago in bugzilla
(12648).

To add to this, I still can't switch to Calendar or Tasks. As soon as I
click on the folder, that component goes into 100% CPU and I have to do
a killev. It wouldn't surprise me if all of this breakage is due to the
same problem (in gtkhtml?). Let me know what I need to do to help track
this down.

In my case it was a missing .oaf file (I believe it was

case for others who had the problem. I don't recall what their fix
was. It's in the archives from a month or two ago.

This was a bug that was fixed several weeks ago. You'll have to either
update to a newer .deb or if you can't find one compile from tarball or
CVS. The workaround is to erase the address and re-enter it.

From reading the postings... I wanted to know if there is a debug

Evolution in this mode that would be sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and the support person would know what's going on.

Maybe have it in the Help... then Debug Mode something like
that... or from commandline switch that would activate this mode?

this is already available. When evolution crashes, the GNOME bug report
tool (bug-buddy) is started, gets a backtrace of the binary that
crashed, and lets the user fill in some information about the bug, and
  send it over to bugzilla.

If you use evolution and haven't seen that yet, it means that evolution
has never crashed for you? :-)

The problem with this is that the bug-buddy is not activated when only a
component dies (most of the time) like the already documented bug where
the mail component dies when deleting an email.

If you know what component is crashing (i.e. evolution-mail), you can
run it in a debugger, reproduce the crash, and then extract a meaningful
stack trace (same as what bug-buddy gives you). There are instructions
on how to do this in the archives, but here's a quick run-down:

1. In a shell, type gdb evolution-mail.
2. In gdb, type 'run'.
3. In another shell, a few seconds later, start evolution.
4. Reproduce the crash.
5. type 'bt' in gdb to get a backtrace of what happened when it
crashed.

Of course this assumes that the crash is repeatable. If it's not, then
it's going to be more difficult for the developers anyway.

I think you either need to get the latest gtk-doc from CVS,
or configure evolution using the '--disable-gtk-doc' flag.

I grabbed the latest from CVS and that didn't make any difference. It
used to compile fine without the --disable-gtk-doc flag, but about a
month or two ago someone broke it. Oh well. I might try to figure out
what's broken, but I'm not sure where to start.

I think I solved the problem. In case anyone else runs into it, I
updated my gettext from 0.10.35 (what came with Mandrake 8.0) to 0.10.38
from Cooker, and it compiled fine. This also fixed a problem compiling
translations in Nautilus.

[Evolution] Accessing IMAP folder puts Evo into endless loop

2001-06-23 Thread Dan Hensley

Hi,
I just got back after about 6 weeks of traveling and updated
Evolution from CVS. When I try to access my IMAP folder, Evo just goes
into full CPU usage and never comes back.
Also, I find the progress bar for IMAP folders to be extremely
annoying. They always appear right over the top of the password entry
dialog, usually when I'm about halfway through typing in my password. I
have to switch focus and start over. Would it be possible to display
messages like this at the bottom of the main window, or anywhere else
that's not a separate window?

[Evolution] Problem adding contacts by right-clicking on e-mail

2001-06-10 Thread Dan Hensley

This is a strange one. I right-clicked on an e-mail address in the
message view window, and it asked me if I wanted to add to contacts. I
said yes. It then told me that this contact was a duplicate contact.
However, nothing about the contact I was trying to add was the same as
the one it said was a duplicate.

On a related note, I tried Edit Full when adding the contact, and
nothing happened.

Dan

P.S. Please reply to me directly as well as to the list, since I'm
going on a trip tomorrow and I'll be turning off my mailing list e-mail
while I'm gone.

Re: [Evolution] There is absolutely a bug with the delete key

It happened to me again. No, it's NOT my keyboard. I'm
not sure how to repeat it exactly, but I think it should
be fairly easy to do (especially since it's happened to

and bonobo from cvs from this weekend (to fix the focus
bug with address fields), and since then, when I first
launch Evolution the Delete key works to delete e-mail,
but after a while it no longer works. If I can figure
out the exact steps I'll post a bug report. So please
Ximian folks, this time don't be so quick to dismiss this
  report.

Well, try this. Click on the message body in your main
program window. Now hit DEL. You'll notice it won't work.
If you now click on the message list, DEL will work.
It's a program focus thing that I reported last night.
Could this be what you've noticed?

 Miles

I'm at work right now so I can't try it out until late
tonight, but I'm almost positive that's not it. This morning
I specifically selected an e-mail, hit DEL, nothing happens.
So I click on several more. Note that ^D worked every time.

I'm suspicious that it's a sawfish problem from this weekend's
CVS. I think to reproduce it all you have to do is switch
to a different desktop and back, but I won't be able to test
this until at least tonight.

There do appear to be other focus problems between IMAP
and local mail folders (I think I reported that this
weekend but haven't seen any responses yet). Is this what
you've seen? To me it looks like the message highlight
color is different between the two, but I suppose that could
be because the focus is different between the two.

minutes later when I came back to my computer,
evolution-mail had crashed. Here's a backtrace bug-buddy

Re: [Evolution] gtkthml still locks up

2001-04-29 Thread dan . hensley

can do? I tried grabbing an older version of gtkhtml
from CVS, but reverting it didn't make any difference (I
assume because of the changes to ORBit?).

Larry's change wasn't for the crash-on-return, it was for a different crash.

You absolutely need the bugfixed ORBit to be able to run the current gtkhtml.

Today I updated to the latest orbit-stable-0-5, gal, gtkhtml,
evolution-0-10, gnome-vfs, oaf, and gconf, and the problem still
exists. Does that mean that it's a known bug (should I enter
a bug report?), or is there still something wrong with my
system?

It's a little frustrating, because I've tried reverting
to the last released gtkhtml and ORBit, and cvs from various
dates in between, and nothing fixes the problem. I haven't
been able to compose mail for about 5 days now.

Stealth changes like this aren't very nice. I didn't see
anything about this in the gtkhtml Changelogs, so I never
would have figured this out. Shouldn't ORBit's version number
have been bumped and gtkhtml's dependencies as well?

It's already fixed if you get the right ORBit, we're working on plans
 for the next release.

I updated ORBit from CVS, and it compiled fine. But when
I tried to install it, I got

Making install in everything

Then I tried Evolution, and it still had the problem. What
should I try next?

Re: [Evolution] gtk-doc

2001-04-19 Thread dan . hensley

Is compiling with gtk-doc supported yet? I tried compiling yesterday
the 4/18 snapshot, and got the attached error.

This has been happening for the last few days, but unfortunately
I haven't seen anyone from Ximian respond. I tried to figure out
what was happening tonight, but I have no clue how the gtk-doc stuff
works. I tried grabbing the latest from CVS, but that didn't fix it.

What did work was to go into the directory with the problem and
run 'make' a few times in a row. Eventually it went through without
errors. Of course, you could also remove 'doc' from SUBDIRS in the
top-level Makefile.

Very weird. It works just fine for me.

Can you please try attaching to evolution-mail and getting a stack
 trace for where it's hanging?

I think gal must have been in the middle of updating or
something. I updated gal again this morning, and now
attachments work fine.

Incidentally, I know that no one seems to be able to claim

[Evolution] Focus messes up with autocomplete

2001-04-13 Thread dan . hensley

This has been a problem for a while now, so I thought I'd
bring it up. Whenever I start typing an e-mail address
in one of the address fields of a message, as soon as I
type the first character the autocomplete pulldown shows
up and keyboard focus goes who-knows-where. So anything
else I type goes to the bit bucket and I have to use my
mouse to return focus to the address field. This is
incredibly annoying.

This sounds like a window manager hints problem... It doesn't happen for
me at all. What window manager are you using, and with which focus mode?

Hmmm... I'm using Sawfish 0.38, in whatever focus mode it
sets up by default. On the control-panel Focus entry, I
tried toggling the various choices, but couldn't get anything
to change. About 2 weeks ago I don't think Evolution did this,
but at least a week ago it started behaving this way.

Incidentally, I just tried switching to IceWM and it exhibited
the same behavior. So I'm not convinced it's a WM issue.
What version of Evolution are you using? I'm using evolution-0-10,
gal, gtkhtml, and bonobo updated from CVS today.

Not sure how it could be, since I haven't changed my theme in a few

Yes, it's definitely broken again. And what's worse, the blank
