 Is on Gnome 2.30.

Check NetworkManager. Evolution get's it's connected status from
Network Manager and if that's not setup properly it can cause problems.

I don't know anything about KDE I'm afraid - but certainly in Gnome you
need to tell Network Manager that you have a wired (or even wireless)
connection and then things work. If you have no connection showing in
Network Manager, then Evo probably thinks there is no network connection
on your machine and so doesn't connect.

You need to tell the system that the network interface is managed by NM.
Even if the network is working, if NM is not registered as managing it
then some apps including Evo and Firefox will think you aren't
connected.

The front-end to NM can be nm-applet (Gnome) or knetworkmanager (KDE),
it doesn't matter. I'm not familiar with Debian, but under Fedora the
easiest route is to run system-config-network from a Shell and mark the
interface as managed by NM.

But Firefox is working well. Why is only Evolution who has this
trouble? I've been using it over the years and is the first time it
happens. Even when I really hadn't connection, buttons appears.

Anyway, I will try what Patrick suggests. Later I tell you all.

[Evolution] Trying to create Evolution-Exchange Account...

2010-05-30 Thread Jerry LeVan
Hi,

I have an Exchange Account at the University where I retired from.

There is a owa web interface and I can specify my username and
password on the 'initial page' of owa and log into my account.

I have downloaded the evolution-exchange rpm ( Fedora 13) and
when I try to create an exchange account from within Evolution
after I enter my username, owa url and click the authenticate
button I get a 'Could not authenticate' response. ( I entered
my password at the prompt).

What sort of questions should I ask the help desk?

Thanks

Jerry

You have to know what version of Exchange they're running on the server
(actually you can find that out by looking at the OWA login page.

Evolution and evolution-exchange ONLY supports Exchange 2003 (and the
one before that I think). It does NOT support Exchange 2007.

If they are running Exchange 2007, you need to use the evolution-mapi
backend not evolution-exchange.

Note that in my experience the evolution-mapi backend is not stable
enough for everyday use, if you need the full gamut of features
(calendaring etc.)

If all you care about is support for email, then the BEST thing to do is
find out if they've enabled the IMAP support on the Exchange server. If
they have then you can use normal Evolution IMAP to connnect and this is
very robust (but, IMAP doesn't support calendaring: only email).

Thanks,
They are running Exchange 2007. I am currently using IMAP and it works
but I have to send email through my ISP.

My macs are good clients so I can send/ receive by talking to the Exchange
server.

I use Mobile Me to manage my calendars.

I will take a look at the mapi back end. Does it come with documentation
on how to set up accounts?

I'm not sure why that would be: is it because your server admins don't
allow sending mail via IMAP? I can send mail via IMAP to our Exchange
2007 server and it works.

No need for documentation. After you install the appropriate Evo
backend package, to go Edit - Preferences in Evo and add a new account,
and select the account type Exchange MAPI. Fill in the appropriate
values for the server and username etc. as normal. It should be fairly
straightforward but ask if you get lost.

Sigh,

I tried all of the servers I could think of and was never able to
authenticate using the evolution-mapi backend...

I guess I will have to consult with one of the email admins back
at the university.

Thanks,

IMAP is for reading mail, SMTP is for sending (most likely). I've not
heard of IMAP being useable for sending email.

Yes, you're right. What I meant was that my exchange server allows
sending mail as well, using normal SMTP, not requiring MAPI. Sorry I
was unclear.

it was finally very stable and reliable, including calendaring/meeting

Then my company switched to Exchange 2007 and I've had to use lookOut!
