[Evolution] Ubuntu 20.04 and Evolution

2020-08-10 Thread Alex Evans via evolution-list
Hello,

I left the Windows OS after some 30 years and am in the final stages of
setup. I installed Evolution and imported my Outlook database into it.

I have several email accounts in use (my wife and I are sharing one
computer). Those accounts are set into a Unified inbox.

All the accounts, including my Gmail account are set as POP accounts, by
choice. I tried to find answers in the documentation, but am left with 3
open questions:

1) How to setup HTML as default
2) How to get Evolution to remove all deleted items from the Trash folder
Automatically upon exiting. In Outlook, this was my setup, now, I forget to
do it manually each time.
3) At installation time, I created all my email accounts, including my
Gmail account, they are all listed under the 'Accounts' header. But, my
Gmail account has also an extra entry at the end and it seems to be default
for new messages, crafts etc... How can I get rid of this?

Looking forward to your feedback

Thank you
Alex

Adding the missing bits, in order to view the POP communication, you
should launch evolution with the variable CAMEL_DEBUG=pop3, e.g. from a
terminal:
 CAMEL_DEBUG=pop3 evolution

(redirect to a file, etc. at wish)

see https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/Debugging for more general
information

Actually, as there is no encryption, a packet sniffer like wireshark
should also be able to show you the full communication. In fact, I
wonder if your troubles might be related to evolution not liking to send
the credentials over a channel with no encryption (did it ask for your
pop password? AFAIK, it will store separately the POP3 and SMTP ones).

Best regards and welcome to the club

Hi,
Did you try Account Editor->Your Account->Receiving Options->
Disable support for all POP3 extensions?
I don't know what this does, but I used to need it to get POP
mail with an older server.

Hi,

is your ISP gmail?

I'm not using gmail, but I found those pointers:

"Port: 995"
   ^^^
- https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7104828?hl=en

"Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)"

-

Ralf

You can run Evolution with debugging to view the POP commands used. If
you understand POP that might help you.

Otherwise, if you are using POP with leaving email on server, I have
seen that screw up several email clients, not just Evolution. POP is
simply not intended to be used as a permanent email store for multiple
clients. Clients get confused when other clients change the mailbox.

Or it can go the other way. I believe it was one of the Microsoft mail
clients that repeatedly fetched ALL of the POP messages in order to
verify that it already had copies in the local storage. Every time that
it synced. It didn't lose track of messages but it did use hundreds and
hundreds of megabytes of unnecessary data traffic.

If POP is all that you have, I strongly recommend setting up an IMAP
server and doing a full fetch and delete of your email from your ISP POP
into it on a schedule. Then point all your email clients at the IMAP
service.

You don't say what version of Evolution this is. See Help->About.

[Evolution] Evolution will send but not receive Emails

2020-08-10 Thread John Nice via evolution-list
I am a very new Linux user. Decades ago I was an HP-UX sysadmin, but
starting again I went the Zorin route and I'm very happy.

I very much like Evolution. It's a suite of useful functions and I've
enjoyed getting to know it. BUT, I can't manage to receive POP3 Emails.
My ISP's requirements are pretty basic and I had no trouble receiving on
sylpheed, but Evolution will send with no problems but not receive. It's a
basic setup, port 110, no encryption, authentication by password, dead
simple. I know there's unread undelivered traffic by looking at web
access, but while sylpheed will grab it evolution won't.

Please, any ideas??
