SOLVED and thank you Matt.

This was exactly the issue. I simply added "export DISPLAY=:0.0" at the
beginning of the cron script and problem was solved. That also let me
use "notify-send" to put up a warning before shutting down.

But, I'll probably put this on the back-burner. Regardless, I learned a
very valuable lesson here for running cron scripts and do appreciate
the lesson.

Thanks for that sage advice Patrick. I was trying to just automate the
"backup" button but understand that is not necessary nor desired. I
presume that in the case of needing a restoration, it would be
sufficient to simply restore the .local/share/evolution and the
 .config/evolution folders?

Thanks for the help!

In evolution exporting a number of mails to a mbox file does exactly
that: generate a file with those mails. If you want to view them as if
it was an account, you need to configure that separatedly:
File → New → Mail account, and in Receiving Email choose either
"Standard Unix mbox spool file" or -probably more useful- "Standard
Unix mbox spool directory".
This way you can create a new account which loads a mbox you previously
exported. Or, rather than going through that separate step, you could
add the account first and then move the mails there.

[For some reason, CTRL-L does not work with your message and

I don't think you are doing what I was asking about--if you

I'm worried about an XY problem... You could define an Archive folder
in Evo; see "Help ▸ Contents ▸ Mail Management ▸ Account Management ▸
some account type ▸ Defaults ▸ Mail folder locations". You could then
probably softlink the corresponding local folder to your NAS location
though I don't know how Evo behaves if that location cannot be reached.

Why would you want to manually save mail, in order to move old mail?

Indeed, Evolution is not a standalone single email message viewer tool
to view messages stored in random external places.

Where to visually see an own account after which exact steps?
Do you maybe describe some Outlook behavior or such?

Don't do that. Evolution is not designed to be run as a batch job. It
expects to have a DISPLAY, which a cron job will not have. This is just
not going to work.

The wider problem is that (once again) we have to reiterate that
evolution-backup, contrary to its name, *is not for taking periodic
backups of Evolution data*. Its purpose is to help when moving accounts
to a new machine, and it's designed to be run from the GUI (or at least
from a user terminal). If you need to take a backup of Evolution, just
use your normal user account backup system. Everything you need is
already in your user account. That's all you have to do.

I've said it before but I'll say it again: Evolution backup really
needs to be called something else.

Dear Sirs,

This to be able to save a bunch of old mails in an archive which I can put

As far as I can see it is only mbox which requires more or less an export /

It also seems like the export mbox is saving a folder or bunch of mails,

My immediate guess is that cron doesn't know what X display to put
evolution onto.

As a general troubleshooting step, you can append " >>
/path/to/a/log/file.log 2&>1" to your cron job line in order to log any
output from the operation. Regardless of my guess above, this should
give you some more information to try to figure out what's tripping it
up.

Example:

0 18 * * * /path/to/your/script.sh >> /path/to/a/log/file.log 2&>1

[Evolution] Unable to launch Evolution from a cron job

2021-03-17 Thread Darrell Barabash
Hi Evolution enthusiasts,

I've exhausted what I can find on the web and am looking for some
guidance. I'm running Evolution 3.36.4 on a MINT 20.1 system. I am
trying to perform nightly backups by running the "evolution-backup"
utility in a script called by cron.

When this script is run from command line (as my normal user),
everything works great and evolution restarts after the backup.

However, when run from cron (as my normal user, not root), I can see
that the evolution shutdown works great and that the file backup also
works. But, Evolution does not restart again irrespective of whether
the --restart option is used or not.

Key elements in my script:
# create a timestamped name for the backup file
BACKUPFOLDER="/mnt/backup_disk2/evolution_email_on_beeker/"
BACKUPFILE="$BACKUPFOLDER$(date +%F)-evolution-darrell.tar.gz"
touch $BACKUPFOLDER"cron-backup-started"
#
# to get a clean backup shutdown evolution first
evolution --force-shutdown
#
# perform the actual backup
/usr/libexec/evolution/evolution-backup --restart --backup $BACKUPFILE
touch $BACKUPFOLDER"cron-backup-finished"
#

I also tried restarting it with
evolution & disown evolution
nohup evolution > /dev/null 2>&1
and neither of them work either in cron but work fine in the script
when run from command line.

I'm not a Linux expert and am perplexed by this behaviour. It would
seem that some critical information needed to restart is getting lost.
But, this is only the case running from cron. From command line all is
good.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance,
Darrell ...

PS - this is my first post to this list and apologize in advance for
incorrect formatting or protocol.

Dear colleagues,

Evolution 3.28.5 (Current CentOS 7 release, MATE desktop).

This looks like a bug, and I will report it unless somebody

on this list tells me it's really a great feature or my

recent version is too ancient. The situation:

I am writing a new email and already have "To:" filled in.

I decide to send a Cc to somebody who sent me an earlier email.

I view the old email, put my mouse over the "From:" address,

right click, and select "Copy email address". I single click

in the "Cc:" field on the new mail, then click "Paste" in the

"Edit" menu. The address then pastes into the body of the new

email instead of pasting into the "Cc:" field. Curiously, if

I middle click in the "Cc:" field instead of clicking "Paste",

the address correctly pastes there in the "Cc:" field.

Hi,

For example, the 3.30.x has in the Edit->Message Filters->

Alternatively, older versions contain a Condition "Source Account",

The actual account type can influence this in a sense that users

not

that useful information in this case, because you already said that

Hi,
just for the record and history, I received an approval from the
Verizon Media for the mail, CalDAV and CardDAV scopes of their OAuth2,
thus it can be added to the evolution/-data-server. I opened [1] for
this. See it for any further updates.

An interesting thing is that this makes the experience close to the
Google, adding Calendars, Tasks and Contacts beside the Mail account,
just by filling @ymail.com address and keeping everything else in its
defaults.

Makes me wonder what else I've missed, especially as many of these
things are not mentioned in the Help.

Hi,
that's true. One of the main places for such "announcements" is the
NEWS file. There is written what had been done for the release. It's
not advertised loudly in any other way.

Guess how many hidden option in GSettings/DConf are, which can fine-
tune the behavior of the application in many ways. ;)

With new options, there's usually chosen a sane default, mostly to not
change the behavior to the current users, unless it's desired to change
it. The defaults do not work once the user changes the value.

I'd missed it too. I think the problem is that when new features appear
in Evolution we often don't notice them unless there's a specific
announcement.

Hi,
it's there for a long time, can be years, so you've just missed it.
