[Evolution] newbie question about filters

2010-07-23 Thread Ben May
I'm on some mailing lists that generate a LOT of content. I want to
route these messages into a folder. I've set up a filter rule for this,
and it seems to be working, but I have to select a group of messages,
then do control-Y, and then the filter gets applied. Isn't there some
way for the filters I've set up to be applied to incoming messages
without any intervention on my part? That is, once a message comes in
that fits that filter rule, it gets moved, no "select messages,
control-Y" required. Can I make the filter run at some set period, like
every 15 minutes?

[Evolution] yet another newb question

2009-12-01 Thread Ben May

When I copy and paste cells from openoffice spreadsheet into evo, the
cells are converted into an image. Is there a way to have them put into
the email body as an HTML table rather than a static image? Thanks!

I've never gotten evolution to work correctly with Exchange 2007. I
ended up having to completely remove the evolution MAPI plugin because
all it did was cause evo to segfault.

The whole point of my suggestion is that I like choice, as do a lot of
others. We'll NEVER get the bottom-posters to agree that anything other
than bottom-posting is acceptable, and you'll NEVER get people who
aren't aware of the argument or who are agnostic to its outcome to
follow all the rules unless they're enforced by ALL clients which will
never happen.

So why not please all parties as best as possible? :)

[Evolution] top versus bottom posting and the "control-L" function

2009-10-20 Thread Ben May
All this discussion of top versus bottom posting got me thinking. If
there's ALREADY a function in evolution specifically for replying to
mailing lists, couldn't we add configurations where you set:

For regular reply or reply-to-all: {Use top posting / Use bottom
posting}
For reply-to-mailing lists (ie: control-L): {use top posting / use
bottom posting}

Just a thought. :)

I just wanted to add that I have absolutely no stability or performance
problems with Evolution Mail. At least not since I gave up on the MAPI
plugin which was causing MASSIVE memory leaks.

Of course I have a very burly system...

You can hold down control and click on individual emails or hold down
shift to select a whole series of emails if you want to perform bulk
operations. This is a pretty standard workflow in almost all modern
operating systems/software applications. :)

I have to say - this thread has given me more laughs than any I've
gotten from a mailing list since I used to be on the EDM one back in the
late 90s. Bravo!

Re: [Evolution] Sig placement

2009-09-29 Thread Ben May
I just wanted to say I find it amusing that my original question about a
small feature in evolution led to this fascinating discussion about
internet behavior and best practices.

I work in the field of medicine and I have to concur with the below. I
work with doctors (PLURAL!) who have assistants whose sole job is to
make PRINTOUTS of every email that they receive, and then transcribe
hand-written responses back into their email clients for them. I have to
conform my email practices into the environment in which I operate.

(PS: sorry for the top-posting, heh)

Re: [Evolution] Sig placement [Was: newbie questions]

2009-09-28 Thread Ben May

I dont entirely disagree with you.

The problem is that there are frequently circumstances under which
having my sig appear at the bottom of a long quoted message is
impractical. For example, due to my position, I am frequently forwarded
long email exchanges to which I was not originally privy. I respond to a
whole new group of recipients, leaving the entire previous discussion
untouched so that the context of what has occurred is evident. In this
situation, it makes no sense for my signature to appear after many pages
of quoted text.

In the abstract, it would be nice if everybody followed best-practices
WRT email formation, but we live in the real world where people do not
behave rationally and I am in a position where I need to keep a written
record of everything I say and is said to me through email :)

[Evolution] newbie questions

2009-09-25 Thread Ben May
Just upgraded from a pentium 4 running XP to a dual quad core xeon
running ubuntu 64bit and so far I love it! I am using evolution mail and
have a couple of super super newbie questions:

- In the calendar, the alerts that pop up are transient and only last a
few seconds. Is there a way to make them stay up until I dismiss them?
- I, unfortunately, connect to two email systems, one of which is IMAP
and the other of which is Exchange 2007. I was able to successfully
install the Exchange MAPI plugin and connect to the necessary exchange
server. It works great except that last night I left evolution running
and when I came in the next day, the evolution-data-server-2.26 process
was using up 3.2G of ram and almost 20G of swap (!!!). If I turn of MAPI
then resource usage is much more reasonable. Is this a known problem
with evolution under ubuntu 9?
- Is there a way to make my signature appear in every email without
having to explicitly pick it? Also, if I am replying to a message it
appears to put my sig at the bottom of the entire message, whereas I
want to appear at the bottom only of my text.

Any help appreciated!
