Re: [Evolution] Combining Contact Lists
Before doing a diff/meld you should normalize the vcf data e.g. with the following commands (in an empty directory): csplit your-address-file.vcf /^END:VCARD/ {*} >/dev/null for i in xx*; do name=$(grep "^N:" $i | cut -d\; -f1-2 | sed 's/^N:;*//;s/;/_/') cat $i | tr -d '\r' | sed -Ez 's/(BEGIN|END):VCARD\n//g;s/\n //g' | sort | sed -z 's/^/BEGIN:VCARD\n/;s/$/END:VCARD\n/' >"$name.vcf" rm $i done cat *.vcf >$$ rm *.vcf mv $$ addr.vcf The addr.vcf file is sorted according to the fields and the address- entries (field N). You then can do diff/meld and merge as you like. [Evolution] calendar :: window size storage location of appointment-window
I use the versions "evolution 3.44.1 (by Flathub.org))", "evolution 3.40.4-1ubuntu2" and "evolution 3.36.5-ubuntu1". With all version I have the same problem that when opening e.g an appointment in the calendar a small window will be opened having the same geometry (height, width). I looked at gsettings (dconf-editor) and found a lot of entries to set the window geometry (e.g. composer-window) but no one regarding the calendar appointment window. Dear Milan, your hint solved the problem. The backup could be restored via "tar -xzf" to a temporare directory without an error. Re: [Evolution] How to restore Evolution backup into flatpak environment?
Sorry to be not precise enough. I have a running evolution 3.40.0-1 using Ubuntu 21.10. This evolution environment has been backed up using "File" -> "Back up Evolution Data ..." to a tar.gz file. After exit of evolution I did a "evolution --force-shutdown" and started the flatpak installation via "flatpak run org.gnome.Evolution". There I started the restore via "File" -> "Restore Evolution Data ..." and selected the previously created tar.gz file. As the tar .gz file has a size of some GB it took about 6 min to see that gzip and tar has ended their job (taskmanager). I dont know the exact moment but from that moment any mouse and keyboard action is ignored. The system does not react to ony input In the taskmanager I can see that the system is working (27% CPU load) doing a lot of "xfwm4" tasks like "xfwm4 --replace". After about 30 min the machine freezes. No refresh in taskmanager, no update of time. After waiting additional 30 min without a screen-update, did a long press to the power button to reboot the system. After rebooting the system the flatpak evolution instance shows the same screen as before the restore task. Is it possible that the old apk installation of evolution interferes the flatpak session? There are done slightly more things, like restore of the GSettings/DConf settings, but that changed in 3.42.x, because the Flatpak does not contain related DConf tools. > As the file format has changed from e.g. ~/.local/share/evolution to > the ~/.var/app/org.gnome.Evolution environment I see no easy way to > restore the old backup. Those paths do not matter at all. The application relies on the XDG paths. What precise place on the disk it is does not matter to the application (neither it knows the exact path is ~/.var/ under Flatpak, because the Flatpak application doesn't have access to the whole home). I'm using evolution 3.40.0-1 (ubuntu 5.11.0-37-generic) and evolution 3.36.5-0ubuntu1 (5.4.0-88-generic) installed with apt (deb). There has been no problems with a backup on 3.36.5 and restore on 3.40.0-1. In order to have the latest evolution version, I installed 3.42.4 from flathub.org. This installation stores data in the $HOME/.var path. Trying to restore a previously saved backup from the apt (deb) environment into the flatpak environment failed in feezing the complete pc. I had to power off the machine to get back control. As the file format has changed from e.g. ~/.local/share/evolution to the ~/.var/app/org.gnome.Evolution environment I see no easy way to restore the old backup. What is the official way to restore a backup saved in the apt(deb) environment into a flatpak environment. Which keystokes do I have to press to do the task? As a makeshift I used the sqlite3 cache.db, selected the relevant entries from ECacheObjects and exported column ECacheOBJ to a sequential ics file that I imported to the destination folder. With the local calendar I could identify entries with attachments before import, copy the attachments to the new directory and sed the new path in the exported ics file. The local calendar had to be moved to the new one of the calendar server. But this covers only a copy, not a move or a delete. Are there "better"/"safer" ways to do the task available? Re: [Evolution] evolution :: contacts :: personal information :: no Birthday data from ews account
Dear Milan, thanks for your support. I did, what you outlined and got a big (some dozend) MB logfile that I analyzed (thats the reason for the late reply). But I'm sorry to say that I could't find clarification. There are a lot of more "mysthic" behavior found like sent Anniversariy entries are not displayed in evolution althoug they are sent (seems to be same or similar behavior like Birthday field). All contacts with a filled Birthday and Anniversary field in Outlook could be found in the soup output of the logfile e.g. 1949-05-23T11:59:00Z and 1969-04-07T22:00:00Z but they are not shown in evolution (neither "evolution 3.40.0-1" nor "evolution 3.36.5-0ubuntu1"). The capture date of the contact does not seem to be relevant, as older entries show the Birthday and newer not. The above entries have been entered/modified not very long ago 2021-04-08T20:27:31Z The only difference to the new entered testusers that show Birthday entries in evolution is the length of the ... block. The testusers are significant smaller. It is not clear for me, that nearly the same Birthday/Anniversery entries are shown in evolution and some not although the entries are identical from a format view, only their values differ. As a result I can say that the values are all sent from the exchange server as expectet. The rules for presentation within evolution are unclear. Hi, the evolution-ews doesn't use the vCard format during the exchange of the data with the server, it uses the EWS protocol instead, thus the above "X-" attributes do not matter. The Birthday and Anniversary read/write/update had been fixed long ago, within [1], which your 3.36.5 has. I suspect the server doesn't return the Birthday element or it is set to some odd value. Could you close evolution, then remove the addressbook cache for the EWS addressbook (it's at ~/.cache/evolution/addressbook//; if there are more, you can delete all of them, as they will be re- populated the next time they are opened (the only downside is the bandwidth use this repopulate means). Then run the addressbook factory as this: $ EWS_DEBUG=2 /usr/libexec/evolution-addressbook-factory -w &>log.txt (the actual path can differ in your system) which will debug all the communication between the server and the evolution-ews for every EWS address book configured in the Evolution. I do not want that log, it contains private information, both encoded and in a plain text mode. Do not share it anywhere, please. Once the update will be done and the contacts will not have their birthday filled, close evolution, soft-kill the factory process: $ kill -TERM `pidof evolution-addressbook-factory` Then open the log.txt file and search for "Birthday" (quotes for clarity only). That contains the date. Either the format is wrong or it's not in the file for some/all contacts, or or some other problem with that date is, that it cannot be read/deciphered by the evolution- ews. You can see also the contact names, emails and such around this Birthday, if it's there, which can give you an idea which contact it references and what value is expected (the one shown in Outlook). Could you share what failed according to the log, please? Re: [Evolution] evolution :: contacts :: personal information :: no Birthday data from ews account
Sorry to be not precise enough. So I try to explain it step by step: 1. I look with Outlook: The Birthday date is set. 2. I look with evolution: The Birthday field shows string "None/Keine". 3. I enter a date with evolution and send the data. 4. I loook with Outlook: The new (entered) date can be seen. 5. I look with evolution: The Birthday field shows "None". Normaly definition is "LANG=de_DE.UTF-8". Than I enter e.g. 16.06.2000. If I switch to "export LANG=en_EN-UTF-8", I enter "06/16/2000". Both methods show the same behavior like described in the steps 1..5. The date value of field "Jahrestag/Anniversary" is always shown correct like in Outlook (depending on language selection). If I enter a new contact with evolution, the contact is shown right in evolution and Outlook. If I enter a new contact with Outlook, the contact ist shown right in evolution and Outlook.I extract an "old" contact and a new created as vCard from evolution and compared the .vcf files. The old contact does not have a "BDAY:" entry like the new one (seems to be reason for the "None" text). I extract an "old" and "new" contract using Outlook and compared both .vcf files with the following results: Both Outlook vcf files have a "BDAY;VALUE=DATE:" showing the correct Birthday. The Outlook contact export offers 2 topics, you have to select the 2nd one (Kontakt weiterleiten -> Als Outlook-Kontakt, NOT as "Als Visitenkarte" (sorry I don't know the english menue text)). The first menue item produces NO "BDAY" entry for the old and the new contact. I'm not sure what you mean with "should be". Is it stored for you or not? I tried it here, with an Exchange2019 server, and the Birthday is properly stored on the server, even the changes I make in Evolution are properly reflected in the OWA (Outlook Web Access) interface. The Microsoft documentation says the Birthday is supported since Exchange 2007 in the EWS, thus pretty much for any Exchange server. [Evolution] evolution :: contacts :: personal information :: no Birthday data from ews account
I use the versions "evolution 3.40.0-1" and "evolution 3.36.5- 0ubuntu1". Both do not show the Birthday information of persons in a contacts folder of an ews account. With Outlook you can see and modify these dates, evolution (both versions) only show "None". (The Anniversary field is shown correct.) I can enter a value in the Birthday field and submit the modification. When opening the contact with evolution the field shows "none" again. When I look to this field with Outlook, the modification should be stored in exchange as it is shown as entered with evolution. Is there a configuration item available or is that a known bug? Re: [Evolution] Calender with html formatted description
> Evolution can "detect" HTML description and show it since 3.40.0, Thanks, Milan for the clarification. I set up a virtual machine using ubuntu 30.04 and have been able to install evolution 3.40.0-1. The formatted description from Exchange can now be displayed. Ok, embedded pictures are shown as a text "hole" but the pic can be found in the attachments. It is amazing, that I can enter html tags in the description field and the content is displayed as expected with e.g. lists and tables. Thanks for this feature! [Evolution] Calender with html formatted description
evolution 3.36.5-0ubuntu1 I try to get calendar entries from exchange server (ews connection). The information will be displayed in plain text (no text attributes like bold, italic, color, fontsize etc). Trying to extract the VCALENDAR or VEVENTs from an pst file (e.g. with readpst or evolution importer) is gives the same result. I always get plain text. Enbedded pictures and attachments can be found in the appropiate tab, not in the description area. There I only see pointers like "[cid:image001.jpg@01D75A61.DE68B2D0]". I tried to modify the ~/.local/.../calendar.ics and the ~/.cache/.../cache.db to insert html tags but they are only shown in plain text (e.g. like ... bold...). How can I get a presentation of a calendar entry like in Outlook? Re: [Evolution] Junk-E-Mail folder does not show entries (ews)
Hi Milan, the messages are marked (shown crossed out in evolution, not in outlook-client) by the exchange server, not by me. A funny behavior is that I can mark the mail as "no-spam" in OWA or outlook and it returns to the inbox for about 1 sec. After that the mail appears in the junk- folder again. The same happens, if I delete the message in the junk folder. For a moment you can see the message in the trash folder before it returns in the junk folder again. Only with "shift-delete" (in outlook-client) I could delete these junk messages. With evolution its now possible to toggle the junk flag (e.g. with the cloud icon) an quickly delete it normally. Hi, are the messages marked as Junk by the server or by you/evolution? The Junk E-Mail is a real folder, it should not have set the Junk flag on the messages. It's unset, when the message is moved to that folder (by the evolution-ews). Hi, if your rather old Evolution has it, try View->Show Junk Messages/Show Deleted Messages, otherwise I do not see a reason why you might not see messages in the Junk E-Mail folder in an EWS account, apart of some additional filters being applied for the folder, but that's out of question when you face the same problem with a fresh new EWS account. I tried it here, with the current development version (quite the same as the 3.40.x series in this regard) and I can see messages I marked as junk, which endend in the Junk E-Mail folder, which has also a special icon, not a regular folder icon. Re: [Evolution] undo task delete? trash bin for tasks?
Pete is right, but if you have no backup, you might try to recover the deleted records of the sqlite3 database. - Identify the database to restore (e.g. ~/.cache/evolution/calendar//cache.db - save the database to an other location (e.g. ~/tmp) - have a look into the database using the sqlite3 command. - The table should be "ECacheObjects". - The relevant object is the VEVENT data stored in column "ECacheOBJ". - you can try to use tools like e.g. "undark", "SQLite Repair Tool", "SQLite Database Recovery" - Its a lot of work and success cannot be guaranteed. So better use a backup and enter the missing entries manually. How do I restore old tasks? When you delete a task there is a confirmation popup which says "Allinformation on this task will be deleted and can not be restored." Sopresumably no, there isn't a restore. I suspect the best way of retrieving them is by restoring from a systembackup. Re: [Evolution] configure Contacs hyperlink usage
Hi Milan, thanks for the "mailto:; hint that links to a new mail composer window. An interesting behaviour is, that after entering a phone number and a URL (without the https://) you'll see both hyperlinks. But when entering the "mailto:u...@dom.com;, the mail entry will be shown as hyperlink. The "tel:" entry remains as hyperlink too. But the hyperlink of the URL disappears. Adding the "https://; to the URL results in hyperlinks of URL and mail and disappearence of the "tel:" entry. So the mail hyperlink remains stable. When I mention the "message body" of the calendar entry, I mean the description field below the categories field (sorry for being not precise enough). If I send an meeting invitation the others have less problems as they see plain text. The real problem exists, if others invite me with a description containing a lot of html (or rich text?) content. This is nearly unreadable (e.g.if they had put information in a table). An interesting behavior is that you can enter "https://; and "tel:" links in the description field (message body) with Outlook and they will be shown in the calendar enty at evolution. (I had expectet, that the "tel:" link would disappear but you could click on it). Re: [Evolution] configure Contacs hyperlink usage
Dear Milan, sorry to bother you again. But I'm not sure about the implementation logic of the "tel:" hyperlink. I store contacts and calendar items at an exchange server and have found the following behaviour: Entering the phone number like "tel:+49-1234/56789" will be displayed as hyperlink, when I press the left arrow after entering the number. If I store this simple message body and open the entry again, the hyperlink will be visible and can be used. The only allowed characters for entering the number seems to be [0-9+-/]. If I enter an additional hyperlink in the message body like " https://somewhere.com;, the previous marked hyperlinks of the phone number(s) disappear and the only hyperlink shown will be the "http(s)" entry. But if I delete the "http[s]://" header the "tel:" hyperlinks appear again and the "somewhere.com" text will be shown as hyperlink too. Entering a Mail entry like "mail:n...@dom.com" will be shown as hyperlink (not the "mail:" part) and do not effect the "tel:" hyperlinks. But the hyperlinked mail address will be used as browser URL. As the message body with evolution seems not to support html content, invitations from MS exchange users are horrible to read and destroy any "tel:" entries as the "https://; links will be shown is clear text. What can be done to have a consistent behavior? Are there plans to support html as message body (like in mail)? Re: [Evolution] configure Contacs hyperlink usage
Milan, sorry for an additional question to this topic. I wrote a small snipple of code to place a telephone call for linphone or the FritzBox (a well known router in germany). When I'm planning my phone calls (e.g. as follow-ups), I use the calendar entry. The message body of my calendar entry does not support html content and I cannot enter the telephone number to be called (e.g. as a link to "tel://123- 45678"). This entry will not be seen as hyperlink. But if I enter a link with http token (like http://somewhere.com), this entry will be seen as hyperlink and can be clicked.Entering a URL in the field "Internetseite" above the category field does not work because the information is not stored at the exchange server side (there is probably no associated field). What can I do to enable the "tel://" token to be interpreted as hyperlink too?
