[Evolution] New mailing list reminder

2022-11-22 Thread Patrick O'Callaghan
This is just a head's up that the new list is now available for
subscription, see:

https://mail.gnome.org/archives/evolution-list/2022-November/msg00181.html

We've had some sign-ups in the last day or so but most people still
haven't bothered. It's important to know that when this (OLD) list is
shut down, it could happen without warning. It's not under our control,
and we've been told that once it happens any posts here will simply
bounce. Of course if we get an update on this we will post it.

Due to the uncertainty, I'm going enable posting to the NEW list as of
now. Once again, please do *not* cross-post to both lists.

Hi,
I updated the Wiki page:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution#Online_Support

and added the evolution-users list to the user documentation:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/commit/ded1ecd696f83b31cd33a431afac2da336a93906

It will be shown in 3.47.1 and later versions, thus released as part of
the 3.48.0 stable series.

There are still places where the old list is mentioned (like the
previous versions, in long term support distros and so on), but there's
nothing I can do about it.

Thanks and bye,
Milan

[Evolution] New Mailing List

2022-11-21 Thread Patrick O'Callaghan
As most of you will be aware, the GNOME Project has announced that its
mailing lists, including this one, are to be transitioned from the
Mailman system to a Discourse (web-based) forum.

The new forum has already been set up and can be found at:

https://discourse.gnome.org/tag/evolution

Note that Discourse does support a mailing list based access method,
but that isn't its main focus. so for those of us who prefer a more
traditional mailing list along the current model, we (the moderators,
with input from Milan) have asked the Oregon State University Open
Systems Lab (OSUOSL) to host a new list for Evolution users, and they
have agreed.

The new list information page can be found at:

https://lists.osuosl.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-users

We'll refer to these various instances as follows:
OLD: the current list (evolution-list@gnome.org)
NEW: the new list (evolution-us...@lists.osuosl.org)
DIS: the new Discourse instance (see above)

Some points to note:

 * Users can subscribe to the NEW list from now, but for the time being
posts will be held (deferred) until nearer the time the OLD list is
shut down. This is to enable a smoother transition of the archive,
   hopefully without loss of data.
 * Membership of the NEW list is entirely voluntary. We decided not to
auto-subscribe anyone, so if you're interested, you need to do this
yourself (see the NEW list page above). The NEW list has uploaded
the existing archives from the OLD list.
 * At some point in the next few days, mail to the OLD list will start
to bounce. It's currently unclear if we'll get a warning before this
happens.
* In the interests of continuity, we encourage people to keep the same
email address on the NEW list as they used on the OLD one.
 * You can of course subscribe to DIS as well as NEW, but please DO NOT
CROSS-POST between any of these lists. Cross-posting has a lot of
potential for confusion as replies will by default also be cross
posted, often leading to incomplete threads on one or more forums.
If you want to post something in more than one place, choose one
primary and then refer to it by URL in the other places.

Thanks to all who collaborated on this, especially Lance Albertson of
OSUOSL who has been indispensable in getting this to work.

I agree, and I'd go over to Discourse if I could but ...

"""Your account associated with this email address has been silenced."""

And nothing on my account page, etc... indicates anything about this
status. There's nothing I can do.

I have a two year old message saying I can't use e-mail until it is
"reviewed by staff".

I love Evolution & GNOME, use it all day every day, have since the days
of Ximian, will continue to do so . . . but if this is what
participation is then it isn't worth the hassle.

Hi,

I can't comment on groups.io and I dislike the idea of an unofficial
mailing list. When Bret asked me off-list, if he should set up this list
for Evolution, I replied that IMO it will be very helpful to have such a
mailing list. It at least is good as a transitional solution. Keep in
mind that evolution-list@gnome.org does only exist for another week.
After this week we (those who will not use Discourse) need something to
stay in contact, to find a solution.

Regards,
Ralf

I have no problems with people signing up to whatever they want, of
course, but I have to say that I'm on one or two other groups.io lists
and IMO it's not great. Messages arrive out of order, sometimes they
never arrive (I get replies to messages I never saw), and often they
take a very long time to arrive (compared to when they were sent).
And, the threading is often all broken (although some of that can be
attributed to the other people on the list: they are local neighborhood
lists and there are lots of non-technical people who know nothing about
the correct way to manage email, and are using really terrible mail
software).

As problematic as the Discourse email support is, I think I'd prefer it
to groups.io. Maybe my experience is an outlier.

I don't personally care about all the wingdings on Discourse since I
don't plan to ever use the website. They can add all the badges and
nonsense they want. I got promoted a level (I assume to level 1) just
by visiting for a couple of days in a row (to mess with my config) and
reading a few threads (to ensure I was getting the messages I wanted).
I didn't have to "like" anything or use any emojis or anything like
that. And I don't see much benefit in trying for more than that.

I do believe that this move will result in a decrease in the usefulness
and amount of discussion. It would be very interesting to come back in
6 or 12 months and compare the traffic to the current list versus the
traffic in Evolution tag on Discourse; I hope someone does that check.
Maybe it will be a net benefit, as people are more able to find and
interact with the Discourse site. But my suspicion is it won't be.
