Finally fixed Postmaster issues!

2002-08-20 Thread Finch Brett

Well if anyone remembers, I was trying to alter the default postmaster
reply in a site that belongs to a ORG where we have many SMTP connectors.
The first article shows how you can edit the registry and reboot, but for
the life of me I couldn't understand why it wasn't working. The second
article clears up an issue, which now makes everything work correctly, go
figure. Just thought I'd post this info along to the group as when I first
asked about this, I got a lot of responses about others who couldn't make
this work correctly.

These are the two articles for making the local postmaster the replying
postmaster.

Trouble with forestprep

2002-08-20 Thread Klosa, Bill

I keep getting the error message This account must be valid before
continuing

This is a brief description on my layout:
Exchange 5.5 currently running in a Winnt 4.0 domain called SC
I am trying to migrate to Exchange 2k and W2K. The root W2K domain name is
SANDC. This was done to get rid of the legacy SC name. I have trusts
setup between SC and SANDC and they function properly. I get the above
error when I run the forest prep on the new SANDC domain and try to join the
existing exchange 5.5 in the SC domain. It finds the 5.5 server, runs the
prerequisite test and hangs on the service account screen. This screen shows
the proper 5.5 service account name and when I enter the password, I get
that error.

Ed has spoken.

I love the catch phrase after your signature.

Valid question - different topic. Exchange 2K native organization, 3
AG's (the old Site structure left over from 5.5), two of these AG's
represent all the NAmerica servers I have in production. They will have
to stay separate AG's in the future as well. One has its own admin team
and is on a military installation.

My problem is on one particular network segment - has its own DC/GC and
Exchange box. When admins on this segment fire up ESM and view Public
Folders, they always connect to the Exchange that's present in the OTHER
AG. No problem to use the 'Connect To' feature, but why is this
happening? I've checked the SiteFolderServer attribute on the DC's in
both locations. They both point to the correct machine. What else
should I look for here?

Thanks In Advance

Since windows time service is a SNTP client, and not a good on at that,
It does not look at the leap indicator to check to see if the time
server that is giving it time has been synced. windows time service also
doesn't take inyo account the time it takes for the NTP packet to make
the round trip. Also NTP4 uses SSL ant NTP v3 uses MD5.

The windows 2000 time service does this automatically. Just run
net time /setsntp:time.berkeley.netdot.net
on the Windows 2000 domain controller you installed first, and then
restart the Windows Time service. All other windows 2000/XP machines
in your domain will eventually (within a day or so) get the time from
 it, and keep in sync.

The internet host in the command above is a stratum-2 time server in
your general area. A list of these stratum-2 public time servers can
be found at http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/clock2.htm. Your ISP
may or may not have an NTP server, and it may or may not be reliable,
you might want to give them a call to find out.

If you've got NT4 and Win9x clients out there, see the great info at
 http://www.ultratech-llc.com/KB/?File=/timesync.txt for info on
 syncing their clocks.

RE: Messages delayed by black hole queue?

2002-08-20 Thread Andy David

I was actually referring to telnetting [1] directly to the servers you are
trying to send email to from the mail server itself.
Anything else installed on the Exchange Server? Changes made recently etc
etc...

[1] Les, is that a word?

Yes, we have a Unix-based firewall in front of our Exchange Servers. It acts
as a smart host, and re-writes e-mail addresses. I could telnet to its SMTP
port if I wished, but I'm not sure how it would help.

Note that the message was apparently sent, and moved to the Sent Items
folder. However, the firewall's logs showed that it was not received until
three days later. This suggests that the firewall was not the problem. As
well, it took a 'Move Mailbox' operation to release the message. That
suggests - to me - that the Exchange database had a problem somewhere.

This all sounds faintly familiar; I could've sworn I saw a similar problem
in a posting on this list. Naturally, I can't find the blasted thing when I
want it. Even more naturally, I can't remember whether (or how) the problem
was resolved.

Are there any sort of SMTP relays in front of your Exchange Server?
Can you manually telnet to the servers in question?
Also, make sure the emails arent being delivered to alternate mx record
for
the external users you are sending to and then somehow never getting
routed
correctly to them. Belive it or not, an email I sent two months ago to an
account in London just got delivered last week.
Do you have any headers you could post here?

 EX5.5, SP3, NT4, SP6a, OL98 and OL2K: A few dozen users (out of 3,500) -
including me! - have been complaining that e-mails sent to external
addresses never arrive. They don't even get off the Exchange Server(s),
but
are not in any queue that I can see.

In desperation, I moved my own account to another server (in the same
site).
A message I'd sent on Monday was held somewhere, and not delivered until
Thursday. The headers suggested that it was composed and sent on Thursday.

I've searched the archives, and couldn't find anything related to this. I
also searched my own archive of this list, with no result.

 Comments? Ideas? Suggestions?

RE: Opening other users calendar

2002-08-20 Thread Moore, David K

Simply re-opening the calendars with FILE|OPEN|Other users folders once will correct
the short cut. What is happening is the DN and the server (this is a silly itdea but
reduces the number of calls to the DS) is stored on the client and when it opens it
once it checks the list (look in your Outlook profile) and if it find it, it updates

Chris was right, rebooting the servers had no effect. I have noticed that
recreating the Outlook profile also clears the problem so I am guessing the
old profile must be caching something referring to the servers were on
before I moved mailboxed them.

Sorry that this reply is not totally helpful - only to say that I've got
that issue with a couple of calendars; I don't know why it's happening and
I'm driving round it by adding the offending mailbox via Exchange service
advanced properties. In addition to the relevant calendar folder permissions
it requires 'folder visible' permission at the mailbox level and that
permission will be inherited by any new folders. Not too serious unless you
name a folder 'mynewmistress' or whatever and forget to take the folder
visible permission off.

Since Exchange doesn't really rely on NT permissions for folder access
unless the access was granted as owner permissions through the Exchange
admin, I don't believe it's likely an NT permissions issue. I think that if
you either a. create a new profile for these users on their machine named
'completely new profile' or b. open the folder by going through the process
of File | Open Users Folder and selecting them from the GAL anew.

 Hi Chris,

All mailboxes both target and source have been moved from old
Exchange servers to new Exchange server using move mailbox
and following the Ed Crowley method. However, that process
was about a month ago and the calendars have been working
past the move time but have stopped today. The only thing I
can think of is the PDC in the resource domain may have
changed, it is not under my control. I am scheduling a reboot
of the Exchange servers and BDC in our area to see if this
has any affect, I will report back the result on Monday.

Thanks for everyone's response to date,

RE: Emailing tasks externally

2002-08-20 Thread Jon Hill

If the contractor has Outlook and you have him listed in your Contacts
folder or PAB, double-click on his e-mail address and check the always send
to this recipient in Outlook rich-text format. You should then be able to
assign him the task as if he were a local user. You can also use this
technique to schedule meetings.

Worst case, create a blank e-mail to the contractor, Insert | Item and
attach the task. But if he doesn't use Outlook he probably won't be able to
read the attachment.

Re: Messages delayed by black hole queue?

2002-08-20 Thread Murray Alexander

Yes, we can connect to the destination mail servers. Some people here can
send mail to a given address, while others can't (the mail doesn't seem to
leave the Exchange Server).

All Exchange Servers are EX5.5 Enterprise, SP4 (not SP3). We have Antigen
running on all four servers.

I did see a KB article about how an anti-virus scanner would interfere, but
that was supposed to be fixed with SP4.

It
acts
as a smart host, and re-writes e-mail addresses. I could telnet to its
SMTP
port if I wished, but I'm not sure how it would help.

Naturally, I can't find the blasted thing when
I
want it. Even more naturally, I can't remember whether (or how) the
problem
 was resolved.

Are there any sort of SMTP relays in front of your Exchange Server?
Can you manually telnet to the servers in question?
Also, make sure the emails arent being delivered to alternate mx record
 for
the external users you are sending to and then somehow never getting
 routed
correctly to them. Belive it or not, an email I sent two months ago to
an

Public Folder updating dates accessed

2002-08-20 Thread Thomas Hill

Hi,
I've got a customer running E5.5SP4 on a SBS4.5 Server. They use Contact
Public Folders for tracking sales leads. They recently contacted me because
they felt someone may have unauthorized access to their public folders. The
way they track their sales force is by running a report that shows the last
time the Contact record in the Public Folder was updated. They use a view
with modified date and the Sales rep that is assigned the account. They
noticed that the date for one particular Sales reps accounts were all
updated within a 20 minute period, but the Sales rep was not in the office.
Upon further investigation, other accounts were also updated during a
different period of time. The time period was during normal office hours so
I don't think it was the backup program.

Are there any other processes that could update the last modified date? Is
there any other field that could track what or who did the modification?
Auditing was off, so I couldn't see who or what did the modification.

Thanks,
Tom

Well, the notion is to have POP3 requests authenticate to linux box in the
DMZ, which will then proxy/deliver mail from the exch55 svr behind the

RE: Messages delayed by black hole queue?

2002-08-20 Thread Finch Brett

Are you running any AV on the Exchange box(s)? I had a similar problem, it
was NAV that was causing the problem when I was in the MAPI / VAPI mode and
the Exchange client retry of 5000ms was too low. I cranked it up to
5ms.

Subject: Re: Messages delayed by black hole queue?

Also, make sure
the emails arent being delivered to alternate mx record
for
the external users you are sending to and then somehow never getting
routed
correctly to them. Belive it or not, an email I sent two months ago to
an account in London just got delivered last week. Do you have any
 headers you could post here?

 EX5.5, SP3, NT4, SP6a, OL98 and OL2K: A few dozen users (out of 3,500)
 - including me! - have been complaining that e-mails sent to external
addresses never arrive. They don't even get off the Exchange
 Server(s),
but
are not in any queue that I can see.

In desperation, I moved my own account to another server (in the same
site).
A message I'd sent on Monday was held somewhere, and not delivered
until Thursday. The headers suggested that it was composed and sent on
 Thursday.

I've searched the archives, and couldn't find anything related to
this. I also searched my own archive of this list, with no result.

 Comments? Ideas? Suggestions?

SANDC. This was done to get rid of the legacy SC name. I have
trusts setup between SC and SANDC and they function properly. I get the

Is there an E2K equivalent to this? (allowing alternate recipients to

 be
in
 another domain?)

You want to make sure the Disable Automatic Replies to the
  Internet is
 NOT
selected. This will allow mail forwarded by rules or Alternate
Recipient
  addressing to occur.

If I turn off the automatic replies to the Internet, will this
   allow
the
   forwarding of eMAILs to
   the Outside world?

Based on what you have said here I believe your solution is to go
into
   your
IMS and look at the Internet Mail tab and click on Advanced.

Subject: Forwarding MAil

Good morning,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 SP4

A small part of our organization is moving to their own mail
server.
   They
don't like the way we restrict our Exchange/Outlook system.

What they want is to have all of the mail that is coming in for
these
twenty
users to be forwarded to the new domain. I think we can do this

with the alternate recipient but currently our Exchange
server
does
not allow the transfer of eMAIL to the Outside world. I cannot
find where this is turn on. Please help me.

Thanks.

Regards,
