Importing into contact list from CSV file

2002-10-02 Thread Darren Ash

Hi All

Does anyone know a way of automatically importing a CSV file into a
users contact list and specifying certain options in the process (such as do
not import duplicates). If possible i would like users to be able to run
this program themselves from a shared drive which points to the CSV file
that I update.

TIA

Darren

RE: Importing into contact list from CSV file

2002-10-02 Thread Darren Ash

Perhaps I should explain... I use exchange here but this is at another site
owned by the same group of companies who are using a POP3 based mail system.
I am having to export my GAL every couple of weeks and import the generated
CSV file into their contacts (Which is configured to be viewed as the
address book) (The other mail system does not have GAL's ) I know it can be
done programatically .. does anyone know of a good example ???

So multiple users are going to be importing the same data? Why not use a
 PF
and just import it once? Regarding the original question... Not using
Outlook alone, but it's certainly possible programmatically.

Nowt to do with exchange, but I know you all like a challenge !

Does anyone have a good way of being able to read an access database
to map drives from within a logon script. I currently hav a script that
reads a text file and maps the drives which works OK but is not very
scaleable as it needs to read the entire text file which grows increasingly
larger !!!

The header tool only creates the headersa blank file except for the
 headers you select

Use the directory export function in Exchange and point it to the csv file
created above and it will populate according to those headers

Routing

2002-07-10 Thread Darren Ash

Lets see if anyone can answer this one today ... I'll try and put as
much info as possible this time

Site 1 : Exchange 5.5 SP4 NT4 SP6a
Site 2 : POP3 Mail system

Scenario : Site 2 now owns Site 1 and we have set up various custom
recipients to forward mail around. However all the mail leaving Site 1
currently goes out over our BT ISDN connection. How do I make all mail
destined for Site 2 use the fixed line we have in place between the 2 sites
and not go over the ISDN connection. Looking around in Exchange admin I
have routing tab on the IMS set for all messages sent to Site1.com route to
inbound. Is it just a case of adding a routing entry here for Site2.com
routing to Site2. If so how do i address site2 (DNS,IP etc ) Pls help as
I need this sorted ASAP.

Regards

Darren

On the IMS, go to the Connections tab and look in the specify by email
domain area. You can set up per-domain routing, e.g. add in your other
domain and configure message delivery to the IP address of the POP3
 system.

Subject: How to add a disclaimer on outgoing emails?

Hi, I'm trying to create a simple footnote to be added to each outgoing
message for Exchange 5.5 SP4 users. It will be a disclaimer, something
 like:

CONFIDENTIAL: This communication is intended for the use of the individual
or entity to which it is addressed. This message contains information from
YOUR NAME which may be privileged, confidential and exempt from
 disclosure
 under applicable law.

How can I create such a form(template)? Also, how can I make so that
 YOUR
NAME field is replaced by the sender's full name?

 Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT4 SP6a Server, Outlook 98, 2000 and 2002 clients.

 Thanks!
 Tony

You will probably need a 3rd party product. WinFax is a good one.

Don't you need to have Office SP2(b?) applied to the Outlook client
 before
the recover deleted items option comes on?

Apparently it is always on for deleted items anyway, you just need to add
the key to be able to recover contacts etc ?

I should clarify that the option is not even on the toolbar !

No, but I was thinking that maybe you entered it incorrectly , i.e not
as a DWORD or misspelled it etc...
One other thing: What items are you trying to recover? Before Outlook
  2000,
you can only recover deleted items with the DumpsterAlwayson value from
mail-type folders and not from the Contacts, etc...

All

I have posted this problem before and the only answer I got was to
   ensure
that the dumpsteralwayson key was set in the registry ! This key
is
  set,
but
it still dosent work !

I have a problem where as I cannot recover deleted items using
Outlook 97 on a W2K workstation (the option just isn't there !). I
get
   the
option from any other machine (NT4/98) and therefore can log into
one
  of
those to recover the items, however does anyone know why this
should happen ??? (Server is NT4 SP6a, Ex 5.5 SP4).

The simple answer to that is I dont want to !

Unfortunatly, I am just a mere systems administrator.

Why would you be using Outlook 97 on a W2K workstation? It's not even
 supported any more is it?

You could try removing and reinstalling.

Or you could simply use a later client to recover deleted items.

DumpsterAlwaysOn only enables recovery from folders other than Deleted
Items. The feature should be there for Deleted Items regardless of
whether or not you apply that registry value.

RE: Recover Deleted items .... Missing presumed dead !

2002-02-13 Thread Darren Ash

Apparently it is always on for deleted items anyway, you just need to add
the key to be able to recover contacts etc ?

I should clarify that the option is not even on the toolbar !

No, but I was thinking that maybe you entered it incorrectly , i.e not as
 a
 DWORD or misspelled it etc...
One other thing: What items are you trying to recover? Before Outlook
 2000,
you can only recover deleted items with the DumpsterAlwayson value from
mail-type folders and not from the Contacts, etc...

Restriciting use of MSN Messenger

2002-01-30 Thread Darren Ash

This is not strictly to do with exchange, but I would like to run it
past all you techies out there !
I need to stop a user running MSN Messenger Excite messenger
services. I have forced IE to use a proxy, but this does not stop the
messenger services. User has W2K workstation. Network is NT4,SP6a No
firewall in place ! (So that is not an option!) Does anyone know of a policy
that would work ??? Thanks in advance...

 Hi,

Put a firewall in place (?)

Get a PC, two(+) ethernet cards and install Linux with 2.4 kernel
 (RedHat, SuSE, etc).

Install iptables package, then download and install
 Firewall Builder (http://www.fwbuilder.org/index.html)

Info on how to block these IM services is at

Silly me you can only use gpedit.msc to restrict Messenger in Windows
 XP
 Sorry for the confusion.

But is this machine formatted with NTFS?
If so find the executables and Deny access to everyone.

If not then go to that machine log on as an Admin..
Type: convert c: /fs:ntfs(if C: is the drive where Messenger is
 installed)

Then do the above NTFS permissions

Unfortunatley YES. I could take it away, but he is kinda part of the support
team and therefore needs to know the domain admin password which could be
used to override the local admin account!

 OK, Darren, it's reality time.

 My questions are:
 1. How concerned are you to relieve him of his use of MSN messenger ?
 2. How devious are you ?
 3. What lengths are you willing to go to in clipping his wings ?
 4. What pull do you have over him [photos, evidence, etc.] ?

RE: Deleting Empty ABV's

2001-12-27 Thread Darren Ash

I have tried logging on as the service account but that didnt work either.
(Is that what you meant ?) As a strange side effect, i have built a test
server without Ex SP4 and restored from our live system and it worked. As
soon as i done the SP upgrade it stopped working !
