Public Folder MIA

Title: Public Folder MIA

Exchange 5.5 with SP4

We had a user who deleted a Public Folder that was important to a lot of people in our organization. I have restored the Public Folder with no problem, but I am being asked who deleted the folder in the first place. I have looked through the logs, and can't find where the folder was deleted. My first question is what would need to be audited in order to track this event? Second I would like to know what log the event would be tracked in, Security, or Application?

Thanks in Advance for your help.

FW: Group mail box public folder

2003-01-23 Thread Scott Lounder
Title: FW: Group mail box public folder

We have done something similar here.

What you need to do is create the public folder in Outlook. Then in the Exchange System Manager Go to Folders/Public Folders/YourFolderName and open the properties. On the Permissions tab click add, find the group you want to have permissions to send from the folder, click add, click ok. Back on the permissions tab select the group in the windows and under Roles: select User. This will give the group permissions to send as the folder. It will take some time for these permissions to take effect so just wait a day or so.

If they want to send mail out and make it look like it came from the folder that you just created. Make a new message, go to the View Menu and select From Field, then just add the name of the Public Folder into the From field that is now on the message.

I would not add individual accounts permission like this, only use NT Groups.

I'm not sure what it is you're trying to accomplish with a group mailbox but it is my opinion that a mailbox makes a pretty nice group mailbox. You didn't even say what version of Exchange you're running.

Trying to implement a group mailbox using a public folder. I've been following the directions in the article Implementing a Group Mailbox or Public Folder Instant doc ID #4855 and I can't seem to get the script to work. It does not use the new message class. Does anyone have any info on how to set up a group mailbox using the public folders to track msg.

Subject: Outlook Security

Hi there,

I hope someone can shine some light on this ... it's becoming a pain in the arse !

I recently installed the latest Office 2k service pack on my XP Pro machine, which worked fine. Unfortunately, the Outlook 2k security patch that was installed with it (or with SP1, which is a perquisite of SP3), has caused me some grief with a VB application that I run.

I have a VB app that generates an email using my MAPI profile and sends them out automatically. Since the security update, I get a warning message and a Yes/No prompt. If I change the VB code that '.send's the email and mark it as (vbYes), it simply opens the mail object and I have to click 'Send' before it will go.

Is there any workaround for this ? A 10 minute task yesterday took me nearly 5 hours to root the problem out and sent about 1200 emails !!

Thanks in advance ...

Tim

If you must do it I know that the 4.3 Version of MailSweeper for SMTP will allow you to do this.

Although I for one would talk him out of it. Bandwidth issues alone could probably do it. Go for the link at the bottom of the message, easier, cheaper, and bandwidth friendly

X.400 Address

2002-04-04 Thread Scott Lounder

I noticed that some of the individuals on my Exchange servers have different
X.400 addresses then other individuals. As of right now my site addressing
is:

c=US;a= ;p=SWBankTX;o=Corporate;s=lastname;g=firstname

yes that is a space for the ADMD...

I have some users that have an X.400 address of:

c=US;a=SWBankTX;p=SWBankTX;o=Corporate;s=lastname;g=firstname

The users are on the same server, and it does not SEEM to be causing any
problems. I was wondering if this is something I should be worried about.
Could having different X.400 addresses like this cause any problems?

We are running Exchange 5.5 PS 4. We currently have 4 Exchange Servers, one
of them being a connector box. The users that have the different X.400
address are not limited to a single server.

I appreciate any assistance anyone could provide.

Thanks

I moved 650+ mailboxes in a weekend. Our limit is 75MB per mailbox, and
most people hover between 50MB and 70MB. I just dialed in, started a remote

No, I work 8x5 like the rest of the 4000 staff in my organization and so
opportunities to move mailboxes are in a small window in the mornings
between 7am and 8am, before users arrive. That does not give a lot of
time
to move users, and moving a mailbox of, say, 100 MB can take some time.
Try
moving 500 mailboxes with an average of 30 MB each and I think you'll find
it takes longer than a backup and restore.

Do you work 24x7? Because assuming a 12 hour window on a

While the Ed Crowley Server Move method is very
  effective, I would
not discount the backup and restore method, where you do
  the whole
move within one day. I've used the Ed Crawley Server Move method
and it works fine, but the downside is that it can take months to
move the mailboxes, if you have a lot of them, and if
  they are big.
As a result, recently I used the server move method, and
  had great
success, it was finished in one day and was much cleaner. I
wouldn't say it's that risky, as long as you know how to
  back out of
it.
There are also two types of move, i) using one-line backup
restore, ii) using off-line backup restore, and I found the
latter easier.

RE: Unable to move items to a PST

2002-03-06 Thread Scott Lounder
Title: RE: Unable to move items to a PST

I think the problem is with NAV, I just spent like an hour going through emails and opening every one (well the ones with attachments). Then I tried to copy them all at once, no problem at all, all of them went, where before only one would go at a time.

I also noticed that when I opened a message with an attachment it took a long time (30 seconds) to open. Then if I close it and go on, and come back to that message later, it opens in seconds. Even if I open the message on one machine, and go to a different machine and open the same message there, the same thing happens, the first time you open a message it takes a while, then it's fast. Leading me to believe the delay is caused by NAVMSE needing to scan the attachment.

I started digging around yesterday on MS website and found this Q article saying that basically the problem is NAVMSE (Q317953)

Sigh...you have to hate when someone buys a product against your recommendation just because they think they know what is best...

Unable to move items to a PST

2002-03-05 Thread Scott Lounder
Title: Unable to move items to a PST

I have several users who when trying to move items from their Mailbox to a PST file they get an error message saying: Some items could not be moved. They were either already moved or deleted, or access was denied.

This seems to happen only when attempting to move items with attachments, and only when trying to move more than a single item. For example I can move 20 items from the Inbox(or any folder on the server) to the PST with no problems, as long as none of those messages have attachments. If I attempt to move 20 items from my Inbox(or others) and one or more of those items has an attachment, it will move the items before the message with the attachment, but stop and give me the error on that message with the attachment.

I can select that ONE message and move it to a PST file, but I can't move more than one at a time.

We have 3 Exchange 5.5 servers with SP4 on them, and the problem is occurring on all servers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Scott...

I was wondering if there was a way to convert all HTML messages at a higher level than the client, such as the Exchange Server, or a MailSweeper gateway. We have too many clients, and people who think that they HAVE to be able to receive HTML messages. If we added a rule to all clients, someone would figure out how to go in and turn it off, and it would only be a matter of time before most of the users in our system would have it turned off.

We have Exchange 5.5, before I got here it was determined that only certain people should be able to send mail outside of our system. My question is... I know that With Exchange 2000 SMTP is the core transport system. If users don't have an SMTP address can they still send/receive internal Email with Exchange 2000?
