That would automatically make him unethical then as well. He was one of
the consultants that helped migrate our mail system (not my choice to
bring in consultants). Walked in wearing a Novell jacket and a Novell
shirt.

Conversation: Deckler wrote a book?!?
Subject: RE: Deckler wrote a book?!?

The problem with Deckler's ethics argument, as Andy pointed out, is
that by his logic if you have Cisco golf shirt hanging in your closet
then you are automatically unethical. Equally absurd is his assertion
that lawyers and doctors don't face the same issues -- my mother is a
medical professional; she spent 20 years in private medical practice in
Los Angeles and I can assure you that there was hardly a pencil holder,
ruler or coffee mug in her home that didn't have the name of some
pharmaceutical on it.

I work for lawyers and I guarantee you that if it's raining hard in
downtown Honolulu you will see attorneys crossing the street with
Lexis/Nexis and Bank of Hawaii umbrellas. Are we to believe that a
tax attorney with a Bank of Hawaii umbrella is unethical because he's
going to automatically steer all of his clients to place their
investment accounts at BankOH?

Greg believes that because I'm a Microsoft MVP that I'm just an
unethical front for Microsoft with a massive conflict of interest and
thus unable to properly represent any other product. A ludicrous
assertion on the face of it: I make no commissions, Microsoft doesn't
know or care how often (or if at all) I recommend their products and my
MVP status is in no way dependant upon my advocating Microsoft products.
Microsoft has not threatened to revoke my status because I have a couple
of Linux boxes down the hall. Microsoft MVPs are often some of
Microsoft's harshest critics; especially to their faces.

The fact is that despite my MVP status my firm is still a WordPerfect
shop. I have a handful of very nice ProLaw pens that the sales rep gave
me and exactly zero seats of ProLaw installed. I have Symantec hats,
pens and Post-It pads...but no Symantec software currently installed.
Epson sent me some promotional pens and laser pointers in exchange for
receiving literature about their new projectors -- I haven't bought a
new projector in about 3 years. If I do, I'll consider Epson along with
several other brands. I'm a CNA with no NetWare installed.

Maybe I am the rare IT guy with nerves of steel, but the fact is that
some vendor giving my knick-knacks, some initials or a free CD of demo
software just isn't going to cause me to recommend a solution that I
don't believe is the best solution.

maybe i'm missing something here, but i just read that ethics thing and
it looks like this to me

if you ask 100 people on the street who is more professional a doctor or
it guy, probably everyone would say doctor

ergo if it people want to be considered as professional as doctors and
get paid similar salaries then we need to create a professional
governing body and not have silly things like microsoft certification

that would be the equivalent of having pfizer certification as a
doctor, which dont make no sense

obviously there are some strong feelings about some past history that i
have no idea about but the ethics piece looks like a sound argument to
me

Yes, I see your point, although I'd hope my desktop AV would catch this
stuff before it reaches the exchange server.

What I don't like is the burden of a realtime scan on exchange. Perhaps a
combination of gateway scanning, nightly mailbox scans and realtime desktop
AV would be sufficient.

Do you really think that the *ONLY* possible way a virus can
get into your Exchange environment is through your SMTP gateway?

Let's say a user uses Outlook to POP an email from their
personal account into their Exchange mailbox, and that email
is infected. Or let's say that a user downloads a file from
the Internet that infects their Exchange mailbox. Now what?
Since you don't have any mailbox-level virus protection, you
have to sit there and watch this thing propagate to all your
users and infect all your mailboxes.

But at least your gateway will clean it before it sends it
 out to your customers.

I'm kind of in a similar position, I just can't help but
   think that
whatever you have at the gateway there's a bit of added

having something like Scanmail on the Exchange box, given

 blocking capabilities and all.

Is there a refresh or synchronize that needs to be performed?

The best thing to do is get the two departments who have the most mail on
the server together in a room. Explain that you have to split the IS in half
and hold a sword over the server. The department that asks for their mail to
be deleted so the store need not be split in that manner is the one that
truly loves the server most and, hence, deserves to have the whole of it.
Wipe out all the other mail on that server, delete the accounts from other
departments, and take enough money for a 2TB drive array out of that
department's budget.

If neither department steps in, then hand each half of a server and chastise
them for their foolishness.

Alternatively, if a 73GB IS bothers you, you could always buy bigger hard
drives for the box or tell people it's time to right-click the Deleted
Items folder and select Empty 'Deleted Items' Folder from the available
choices and then to select Yes at the next prompt...

Hi guys.

I have an exchange 5.5 on a strong machine. The IS is over 73GB (total of
500 users).
I am thinking whether it is the right move to split this box into two
servers.
The main problem is that I will loose SIS...
On the other hand, I will have two smaller databases.

I am sure some of you had this scenario in the past. I would like to hear
your opinions.
In case it is important, the IS is going to be moved to EMC box in 3 months
(part of storage project).

I am mostly intersted hearing from happy users with such big IS (are
there?!)

Thanks!

I am mostly intersted hearing from happy users with such big IS (are
there?!)

Thanks!

RE: Outlook/Citrix/offline storage

2002-09-06 Thread Smith Joseph

We have a lot of road warriors that want to write email, etc. while offline
(in meetings, on an airplane, etc.) and synchronize with the home office
when they're back in the hotel room. It's MUCH cheaper for them to use the
Internet connection in the hotel room rather than dial up from Finland back
to Texas. Not to mention MUCH faster.

I'm would like to get the TS/Outlook2K to create an ost on their local drive
that can be accessed by their local Outlook2K while offline.

Thanks,

Are you trying to create the OST file for when you don't have access to
Citrix? Then the users laptop with Outlook would have access to the
OST? Isn't there an issue when Outlook tries to access an OST that was
created with a instance? Do you have your citrix drives remapped or is
the remote user using the V: (C$) drive?

Notes is indeed a fine collaboration platform if you invest the
resources to hire programmers. Exchange is a far better e-mail
platform. I suspect the management making this decision are doing so
because of business partnership (meaning political pressure) reasons.

I agree with Chris - If the goal of the organization is collaboration (I
know I will get flamed for this) nothing beats Notes - I have managed
both environments each environment has its strength and weakness but in
terms of true collaboration and knowledge sharing Notes/Domino is the
stronger solution.

Domino and Exchange can coexist - Exchange handling e-mail while Domino
for collaboration - we are running in that configuration currently
without any problems - also to ease the pain for your users if you lose
the battle to management you should suggest iNotes for Outlook - end
users will still be able to have the outlook experience for accessing
e-mail, calendar, tasks and contacts -

IMHO it depends on what the company culture leans towards.
If it is hardcore collaboration and mail is an afterthought then Notes
might be the way to go; although Exchange is catching up day by day. If
it is hardcore mail and communicaiton of the one to one, one to many
type then Exhcange cannot be beat.

 All,

Our corporate mangers have decided that we need to replace our
perfectly running Exchange system with Lotus Notes.

The push for change is being led from the top (non-IT) managers; I
 could
not
find anyone at any IT personnel at our plants that was actually for
this change (Exchange to Domino)! It probably has a lot to do with
IBM heavily courting these guys; our server standard was even changed
to IBM (imagine that!). We're staying with our Compaq...I mean
 HP...thank you very
much!!!

We are gathering information to present a case NOT to migrate (we're
not going to go quietly!). Any info that anyone could provide (case
studies, personal experience, etc.) to help strengthen our case would
 be
appreciated.
We're looking for more than just I really hate it!

We're even considering keeping our Exchange server and just installing
a gateway to the horrid system (any experiences with that?).

 Thanks in advance!

All,

Our corporate standards include an NT4 domain and Exchange 5.5 (and has
for several years now). We have 13 plants located in various countries
around the world. Our corporate HQ (located in Finland) has hired a new
IS director who has given us a directive that, in lieu of the
anticipated AD/Win2K/E2K rollout, we will be changing our backend
infrastructure to novell e-directory/lotus notes/linux servers!

Now, I am as open-minded as the next guy about the prospect of padding
my resume with all sorts of new applications, but that seems a bit
drastic. Apparently, it all comes down to money.

Besides, I love my E55sp4 server; it NEVER gives me any problems.

Has anyone else experienced this? Which would be more painful
short-term?
long-term?: the AD/Win2K/E2K or Novell/Lotus/Linux? I get the
impression that this is a knee-jerk reaction to Microsoft licensing
costs.

Any thoughts, experiences, or warnings concerning this migration would
be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Joseph Smith

Friday blues, once more...
Nice day, no concentration
Need to go home early.

To be young again...
Thoughts of summer vacation
running through your head.

Hanging out with friends...
Fishing down on the river,
Barefoot in the grass.

If you could combine
lazy days of summer youth
with older wisdom...

Oh yeah! I know how!
Some call it retirement.
Wish I had more money.

All,

I have a user with a strange problem:

happens everyday.

My concern is that he did not initiate the original email that caused the

What could cause this?

I'm not paranoid, just curious.

Based on his English usage and the way he phrased his question I'd
 wager
that Mark is not in America. It's really difficult to make salary
comparisons across borders. Hell, it's hard to do it within
borders -
  the
cost of living in San Francisco is demonstrably higher than, say,
 Tyler,
Texas. It would be difficult to compare salaries between those two
locations.

 so ignore that.

 1) Your question seemed to be in reasonable English, but either
your
grammar/spelling or your typing needs some work. Go see how much
 that
adds
 to your salary.

 2) Try somewhere productive like http://www.salary.com

 3) Think about it - number of servers is completely irrelevant.
 We'd
   need
to know what kind of work you actually do with those servers,
where
   you're
located, what training/experience you have, what industry you're
in,
comparative rates for your location, localized inflation rates,
etc.

 4) All of which would be more suited for a Human Resources

Come on people, do you see the :) at the end of the sentence? It was
sarcasm... I was trying to be humorous, I figured no one would believe such
an outlandish story, obviously I was wrong...

Sorry...

I had a #$%#$% step dad that was like that. One time, the combustive
properties of helium came up in our conversation (don't ask
 me why). He
insisted that helium was a combustible gas. I told him he
 was wrong and
eventually had to break out the Funk Wagnall's to prove it.
  The very
first sentence under Helium stated, of course, that it was, in fact, a
non-combustible gas. His response was (I'll never forget),
 How old is that

 What a moron!

Well My first was a small computer called Lazar (I am not sure whether it is
a major brand At that time) something which had a 64 KB of memory and
GWBasic in its ROM. I Was damn Illiterate those days I did not knew how to
find the configuration Of that Toy

Then not to mention the Commodore ant ARC computer with 256 memory And no
hard disk - 51/2 floppies. And that first floppy diskette of mine.. What
trouble I went through to own that..

That's too futuristic for me. I'm on Windows 3.0 and have a separate
unix terminal running pine for email. Works great. Hardware costs are
also low. You don't need no stinkin i386 class machines either.

Ok I have an Exch 5.5 and Exch2K server which is nested inside the 5.5
Organization. I have (2) two-way connection agreements. One to replicate
users and groups. And one for Distribution lists. Everything seems to have
replicated correctly. But if I send an email from Exchange 2k to 5.5 and
then reply back to 2K, when you try to open it in 2k it says : Cannot open
item. Does anyone have any ideas why I'm receiving this error?

We have Exchange 5.5 SP NT 4.0 SP6a and Exchange 2K w/SP1 and Windows 2K
w/SP2

Yes, you will need to install MSEO SP1 for that to stop

my MS Easybake is on SP4. This morning I found that I was unable to make
any bagels with SP4 installed and had to wipe the oven's disk,
re-install the OS and appy SP1 thru SP3 to restore this functionality.
As we all know, SP3 is missing the latest security patches, and someone
was able to telnet in through the fridge and insert raisins into my
bagels.

give me strength...

Hello everyone,

This is Nicholas Longo, the CEO of CoffeeCup Software.
As you may have heard the World Trade Center and Pentagon
were attacked about 45 minutes ago.

The Team at CoffeeCup would like to send our heart felt
sorrow to those that perished in these attacks.

We would like to also say on record that if any country
is found responsible for these attacks, we call for that
country's complete destruction and annihilation.

Do not let terrorism which is designed to create fear

Stay focused and do not stop what you are doing.
