RE: Nimda

2001-09-20 Thread Wong, Joe

Hope this helps ...

I can't even got on long enough to run anything.

Depending upon what you're trying to run, you might be able to make use of
Task Scheduler (or Schedule if your running NT4) to submit a job to run on
your server.

How do you find the machine that's affecting the rest of the network?

If the .eml files are being dropped onto NTFS partitions, check to see who
the Owner of the file is via the security properties.

Subject: Re: Nimda

I got nailed too. Not from an e-mail - I currently block all exe's. We
must have gotten it from an infected web page. I already applied the
patch for Code Red last month but my problem is a little bigger:

I can't log onto the server without getting a Dr Watson error for
explorer.exe. The server runs ok, but after I log on and the desktop
comes up it generates the error. I can't even got on long enough to run
anything. I did get the patch applied for the Transversal vulnerability,
but I'm not sure if that helped. Now our network seems to be slowing down
and people are having printing troubles too. Some people can't get their
Outlook open - not enough system resources. . . We're all up to date
with Virus software for Nimda, but the .eml files are still being created
- but not on every machine. Wierd. How do you find the machine that's
affecting the rest of the network? What virus software is everyone using
for their NT servers (not for Exchange, but NT)? Any help would be
GREATLY appreciated.

I had encountered a client's mailbox which I believe had a corrupt Address
Cards View Setting.

The initial symptoms were that Outlook complained that it Could not access
the folder, when a client (Mrs-X) tried to view the contacts folder for
another mailbox to which she had been given permissions (Mr-Y).

The client's view (Mrs-X) was set to Phone List and it would not even
display her own contacts under the Address Cards view (it complained
saying Outlook cannot display this view).

Further investigation showed that there was a Advanced Contacts Filter in
place on her Address Cards view; but the strange thing here, was that the
criteria contained Date Received on or after mm/dd/yy.

After removing the filter, everything functioned normally.

Has anyone else seen this type of corruption (by the way, we're running
MSX5.5 SP4)?

RE: Has anyone else encountered this?

2001-09-19 Thread Wong, Joe

Actually, in my tests to see what was going on, I was doing this with a
newly created profile on my workstation.

Here's another stupid thing ... After I called our email administrators to
ask if they had made any changes, between the yesterday morning when it was
working (as tested by myself with a profile on my pc) and early this morning
when it was failing (once again tested by myself).

They said they didn't change anything and while speaking with them, I went
in with a profile pointing to Mrs-X and tried accessing the contacts folder
- got the message Unable to display the folder again - and then I tried
Open other User's Folder and told it to open Mrs-X's contacts which I was
already trying to view.

Here's where the stupid part comes ine ... I was able to access her contacts
folder by doing that, and after I closed off that window, and then tried
opening the Contacts folder via the button on the Outlook Shortcuts,
everything was back to normal (i.e. I nolonger received the Unable to
display the folder message and the View dropdown now shows the Current
View menu entry.

!!!Go figure!!! :-(

At this point, it now works Ok and I had the client re-test (she's happy now
- while I'm still confused); and in the meantime, I've asked the email
admins to carefully coordinate and log their maintenance activities when
dealing with this specific mailbox (at least over the next couple of weeks).

From my perspective, with the original filter configuration showing an
invalid field and my dogged attempts (on my own mailbox), at trying to
recreate a bad filter failing; I was thinking that the filter entry might
have been related to a misplaced record pointer within the MSX database
(i.e. that bad filter may have originally been associated with a different
view such as a Inbox View and the MSX database pointers/indexes got mixed up
causing it to be associated with a Contacts View).

RE: Using imsext.dll but looking for an alternative or some sugge stio ns

2001-08-17 Thread Wong, Joe

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the suggestion.

Do you know if it is possible to specify the complete smtp address in the
IMS's Address Space (I was under the impression that it only handled
domains)? If it can't be set up for specific smtp addresses (e.g.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]), then this presents a problem, as our security
legal depts want the disclaimer to appear on all emails which do not have
the specific requirement of leaving it off, and other emails to a specific
domain or even the same address within the domain are supposed to have the
disclaimer message turned on. Then again, even if it can be config'd for
specific smtp addresses, legal/security may only want them to avoid the
disclaimer on the specific emails with the requirement.

So I'm in need of a solution which can be manually turned off at will by the
sender, on a email by email basis; and then there is the possibility that
security/legal may ask for it to only be capable of being overridden for
specific sender's mailboxes.

... Joe

Hi Joe

You could create another Exchange server with an IMS that is dedicated to
those domains and addresses that have issues with the disclaimer and not run
the disclaimer on those machines.

Good morning to some and good afternoon to the others ... I'm assuming of
course that you do go to sleep some time. 8-)

We recently implemented the IMSEXT.DLL, in order to throw in the disclaimers
which our security and legal departments were looking for.

However, this is now causing issues on emails which MUST have only specific
text in the body as they tend to ignore it or choke on it when they see
disclaimer text as well.

How are other people handling issues such as sending an unsubscribe message
to a list when the unsubscribe message is only supposed to have a specific
subject line and absolutely nothing in the message body?

Does anyone know of any alternative products or settings I can use on
IMSEXT.DLL or Exchange; which would let the clients override the dislaimer
text on an email by email basis, or with the ability to override the
auto-disclaimer for specific mailboxes?

This requirement also extends to emails relayed off of our IMS (from behind
our firewall of course).

TIA ... Joe

Subject: RE: Haiku Has Returned

In short - it is a paganistic ritual (Oh sorry, thinking of the wrong
thing). Seriously though, it is just a ritual that the list had been doing
for a long time on Fridays. Haiku is a form of writing where there are 3
lines, each having a certain number of syllables. Specifically, 5, 7, 5.
If you want to read more about it, check in the archives. I'm pathetic at
these types of writing so I won't even attempt to do it.

Hi, Ron
we did that and it accepts the message.
no mailbox is created and when we track the message we get
an NDR generated. and the message goes to lala land.

thanks

Do a Send Mail from AD to all of the users.

This will populate your Exchange with the users from AD.

Thank you,

We are trying to do a move mailbox upgrade.
our current system is windows 2000 with exchange 5.5
we have a new system with windows 2000 and we installed exchange 2000 in
the
prescribed manner for the move mailbox method.

on the new server we did
forestprep
domainprep
installed adc
installed exchange 2000.
now the new server does not see any logons or mailboxes of our users.
they show up in AD users and groups but not in exchange system manager.

and when I try to move mail box on the new server all that shows up in
the exchange
tasks is
create mailbox
establish e-mail address
enable IM.

and on the old server all that shows up is
delete mailbox.

When I create a mailbox on new machine
I can login to it but messages are sent to NDR (non deliverable).

I am at a loss as to why this is happening
should I uninstall and try again???
