RE: Manually relocate transaction log files

2003-09-17 Thread Chris Megginson
Hi Ben,
Microsoft Professional Product Services talked me through this. Their
approach allows you to move them back to the correct place if needed.

Have you learned nothing from the replies? Don't manually move the log
files. EVER. The Exchange Optimizer will move them for you. Safely.
It has to stop the services first before moving them. This way,
Exchange knows where the old log files are in case you need to perform a
restore and roll-back the log files (so you don't lose any mail).=20

RE: Manually relocate transaction log files

2003-09-16 Thread Chris Megginson
I may have not been clear enough.
If your server does not have room to hold all of its transaction log files
(on any partition) and if you can not back it up, and you want to avoid
filling up the partition containing the log files, you can stop the
services, move the (no longer needed) log files elsewhere and restart the
services. (I've done it without any problem many times in the lab and a
few times in a production environment.) You later run the backup when it's
available. Keep all the log files, though, as you may need them if you
have a crash.

No one said do this carelessly. Do this if you have no alternative.

RE: Manually relocate transaction log files

2003-09-16 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
If your drive is full and you need to get rid of transaction logs, and
for some reason you can't run a full backup... the next best choice is
to turn on circular logging so that it would safely eat the unnecessary
logs. Then turn off circular logging and do a full backup ASAP. Moving
transaction logs somewhere else is NUTS!

RE: Manually relocate transaction log files

2003-09-15 Thread Chris Megginson
You can also simply stop the Exch55 services, move (keep) the log files to
another drive/server, and start the services. When you stop the services,
all data in the transaction logs SHOULD be committed to the databases.
I've seen KBs on MS' website implying it doesn't always happen ut it has
always worked for me. Definately move the files and save them elsewhere
just in case.

RE: Manually relocate transaction log files

2003-09-15 Thread Martin Blackstone
No way. Never do it manually, never.

Way to often people move or delete their log files and hose the whole
system. Next thing you know they are on the phone with PSS.

Use the tools provided by Exchange to do the job. In your case, the
optimizer.

Subject: Manually relocate transaction log files

I am in a very difficult situation right now. The backup server for my 2
exchange servers crashed which is currently being rebuilt but in the
meantime the primary partition on my both exchange servers is running out of
space because I could not backup both the exchange servers and transaction
logs are keep growing eating up the space. My question is how can I
manually relocate the logs to an alternative location so that I can have my
exchange server running until the backup server gets rebuilt completely.
Could I cause any damage to the application if I do that? Please help soon!
I would greatly appreciate any help on this quickly. Thanks!
Platform: Win NT 4.0 Server
Application: Exchange 5.5
