The feature was built in to reduce the number of DS calls made by the IS. Keep in mind that the Exchange 5.x core really came of age (so to speak) in early Pentium hardware - having a P60 as a mail server wasn't uncommon. Adding the cache reduced the number of queries and therefore the load caused by directory access by the stores. -- Roger D.
