RE: cannot find domain controller

2002-08-01 Thread l . greig

Presumably, by now, you've set entries in HOSTS and LMHOSTS just to help
point them in the right direction?
(Just for a nag - have you tried the rpcping tool? I *think* it's maybe in
the BORK)
Are your running WINS? If so, are the server entries ok?

Cheers,

Loftus.

Subject: cannot find domain controller

Dear all,

we have a problem that has been going on for weeks. We have one exchange
site with 5 servers, Ex5.5 sp4 plus patches, NT4 sp6 plus patches. They
are all in one NT domain abc. They have to communication with a PDC in a
separate domain xyz for purposes of authentication as all users accounts are
in this separate domain. It complains in event logs cannot find domain
controller for xyz domain error 5719. We know this is a secure channel
problem then.
So we have trawled the knowledge base and done literally everything
suggested anywhere! we have been down the path of nbstat, browstat and all
those reskit tools. We found an article where we can run a reskit command
setprfdc xyz pdcname and this makes a secure channel to the appropriate
PDC. Trouble is the exchange server doesn't stay talking to the PDC, it
drops out with 5719, we have to run setprfdc every hour or users cannot
access mail!!! Could it be our abc domain controller?
We have support call open to microsoft who only suggest everything we have
tried and are generally dragging their heels.
We've ruled out all the network level stuff, switches NICs etc.
Help please, anything we haven't thought of. Other servers in site (same
brand) are fine.
thanks

RE: cannot find domain controller

2002-08-01 Thread l . greig

There are some registry entries you can maybe tweak. Doing a google on
netlogon 5719 gives a few links to pages that might be worth checking out,
e.g.

http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBC/tip1100/rh1157.htm

Some refer to buffer sizes and others to timeouts (check google groups too).

(Of course, be careful - reg backup first?)

BTW, is the MTA complaining on the affected server(s)? It's sometimes good
at squealing when it can't talk freely and I've seen them moan usefully
about RPC in the past. Check the nt application log.

Cheers,

Loftus.

RE: cannot find domain controller

2002-08-01 Thread Foerst, Daniel P.

Can you login to your Exchange server using an account that exists in
'xyz' domain that has never logged in to the server before?
To test this I would create a Temporary test account and add him or her
to the local Users group on that server. If the test fails it may
indicate an issue with the 'abc' PDC.. if failure does ensue try the
above on 'abc's PDC. If that fails you may
have a faulty Trust.
