Look at Q259158. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, December 27, 2001 8:06 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exchange Uninstall I am looking for a way to remove completely all files and all registry entrees from a failed exchange 5.5 install on a 2000 machine that is in an active directory environment. What happens is the install goes fine, but just as it starts to replicate, it fails. The error is the System Attendant can't find the file specified. But no listing as to what the file is. I don't want to rebuild this server just because it is a pain. What happen, is a tech had a bad Exchange CD. She borrowed mine, and didn't throw her's away. Guess which CD she gave me back and thought was mine. Her bad one. So I am looking for documentation on all regentries, locations of all files so I can manually remove this thing. _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

NAV for Exchange 5.5
Hi Folks, I just found out we are going with The Norton Solution for our company anti-virus protection. This is fine for server and client, but I was also told we would be using NAV's solution for Exchange. (Groupware I think). Since I was not involved in this decision, but was the sole decision maker when I chose Scanmail...im not too happy. But...I turn to y'all again, as I did a few years ago for info on the best AV solution. It will work fine for you if you learn how to use it. The rants are usually from people who don't know how to use the tool. I was pretty unhappy with my chainsaw, too, until I learned to hold by the correct end. Until then, it really did a number on me. Read the readme.txt file, and pay attention to every caveat in it. All the rants you find in the archives (that I can recall) are about issues that are either in the readme.txt or in their knowledge base "top ten questions" list. -Original Message- From: John Matteson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Posted At: Friday, December 28, 2001 11:28 AM Posted To: MSExchange Mailing List Conversation: NAV for Exchange 5.5 Subject: RE: NAV for Exchange 5.5 You should really look at the archives for this answer. RE: NAV for Exchange 5.5
PS, another good argument is that it is a good thing to have 2 AV solutions in place. NAV on the servers and desktops, Scanmail on the Exch server. Quite often, one AV program may pick up a virus that the other misses. Plus you get DATs at different times. Symantec is NOTORIOUSLY slow in posting DAT updates. Especially in emergency situations, whereas Trend is typically fast. If you follow the NAV solution, you will may forced to bring email offline while you wait ALL DAY for that DAT update. -Original Message- From: Martin Blackstone Sent: Friday, December 28, 2001 9:31 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: NAV for Exchange 5.5 Going from Scanmail to NAV is like going from Prime Rib to ground round Your company will be very sorry it made this move. In other words, you don't know the config. How much total space does the RAID 5 volume report. I bet if it reports 36.4 then you have a RAID 5 plus hot spare. If it reports 54.6GB you have a RAID5 with a failed parity drive. ScanMail and Groupshield get my votes. We are actually trying to get one of our customers off of NAV 2.1 Build 56 (too old to be effective). One of the major drawbacks with this version is that in order to block a file of extension type .xxx you actually have to go into the registry and put an entry there. Talk about antiquated. I don't know how their current version is, but I would check that out to make sure you are not getting it. A major pain in the ... Cheers. RE: NAV for Exchange 5.5
I feel the same way. I really researched for the best solution back then, and scanmail it has proven to be great...no crashed servers, no bluescreens etc. We did have a few outbreaks, but that was I think due to scanmail being on a P-133 and not being able to keep up with the influx. IF I can build a strong enough case against NAV for scanning...and just do the server/client side solution only, that would be great. I almost want to install it, and have things crash for them not asking me about this...but IM the one that has to recover the thing! :( Ron -Original Message- From: Martin Blackstone [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, December 28, 2001 11:31 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: NAV for Exchange 5.5 Going from Scanmail to NAV is like going from Prime Rib to ground round Your company will be very sorry it made this move. RE: NAV for Exchange 5.5
So your solution with "a few outbreaks" is better than NAV? We use NAV and have had none. Not even close. I just watch the stuff get ditched into the quarantine.Sounds like I'm eating well-prepared ground beef and you're eating wormy prime rib. RE: AV! a full time job?
Just a thought ... isn't anti-virus part of network security? Which makes it EVERYONE's job? Might need a HMFIC to oversee/ upgrade/ promote it, but in the end it's part of every admin's job to one degree or another. John -Original Message- From: John Matteson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, December 27, 2001 7:29 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: AV! a full time job? It could be, depending on the company (someone has already hit on a number of different elements). It would also depend on how much AV your company has in place right now. If you're going from ZERO AV protection, yes, it should be a full time project until you have the layers of protection in place and running. This could be easily rolled into a generic "network/computer security" position, which should be a full time job. CRC errors
I have been seeing CRC errors on my Exchange Server CPQNTAC utility for the last few days, multiplying at the rate of about 2500 errors over a period of 24 hours on an average. Considering that CRC errors could be hardware related I swapped the NIC but this did not resolve the issue, my next step is to schedule some downtime and check cables etc. It does seem to be within our network as our ISP has cleared their T1 lines. Any ideas or comments on this issue would be appreciated. MSExchange 5.5 sp4 on NT Server sp6. AVAPI Scanning question.
Exchange 5.5. We recently upgraded to ScanMail 3.52 and are running in AVAPI as well as MAPI mode. I'm a little confused on how the AVAPI works when it comes to cleaning and notifications. I know that you lose the sender and recipient information and I'm wondering why that is the case? Is it that MS did not put the hooks in for software companies to get that information in their AVAPI scanners? Restoration Solutions?
Hi, Running Exchange 5.5 SP3 on NT server. We backup the server nightly using client agent from InnoculateIT. Unfortunately one of our users has misplaced or lost a large amount of mail and it is nowhere to be found. We are curious what restoration options are available with Exchange as we have not done this previously. Short of setting up another Exchange server and restoring the databases, is there any way quickly to access the backed up mail? Otherwise, what suggestions does the group have for making this restoration easier in the future?
