They pay me to tease shades of meaning from social and cultural issues, to
provide words that help
make sense of that which troubles the American soul.

But in this moment of airless shock when hot tears sting disbelieving eyes,
the only thing I can find to
say, the only words that seem to fit, must be addressed to the unknown
author of this suffering.

You monster. You beast. You unspeakable bastard.

What lesson did you hope to teach us by your coward's attack on our World
Trade Center, our Pentagon, us?

What was it you hoped we would learn?

Whatever it was, know that you failed.

Did you want us to respect your cause? You just damned it.

Did you want to make us fear? You just steeled our resolve.

Did you want to tear us apart? You just brought us together.

Let me tell you about my people. We are a vast and quarrelsome family, a
family rent by racial, cultural,
political and class division, but a family nonetheless. We're frivolous,
yes, capable of expending tremendous
emotional energy on pop cultural minutiae-a singer's revealing dress, a ball
team's misfortune, a cartoon mouse.

We're wealthy, too, spoiled by the ready availability of trinkets and
material goods, and maybe because of that,
we walk through life with a certain sense of blithe entitlement. We are
fundamentally decent, though-peace-loving
and compassionate. We struggle to know the right thing and to do it. And we
are, the overwhelming majority of us,
people of faith, believers in a just and loving God.

Some people-you, perhaps-think that any or all of this makes us weak. You
are mistaken. We are not weak. Indeed,
we are strong in ways that cannot be measured by arsenals.

Yes, we're in pain now. We are in mourning, and we are in shock. We're still
grappling with the unreality of the awful
thing you did, still working to make ourselves understand that this isn't a
special effect from some Hollywood blockbuster,
isn't the plot from a Tom Clancy novel.

Both in terms of the awful scope of its ambition and the probable final
death toll, your attacks are likely to go down as
the worst acts of terrorism in the history of the United States and, indeed,
the history of the world. You've bloodied
us as we have never been bloodied before.

But there's a gulf of difference between making us bloody and making us
fall. This is the lesson Japan was taught to its
bitter sorrow the last time anyone hit us this hard, the last time anyone
brought us such abrupt and monumental pain.
When roused, we are righteous in our outrage, terrible in our force. When
provoked by this level of barbarism, we will bear
any suffering, pay any cost, go to any length, in the pursuit of justice.

I tell you this without fear of contradiction. I know my people, as you do
not. What I know reassures me. It also causes me
to tremble with dread of the future.

In days to come, there will be recrimination and accusation, fingers
pointing to determine whose failure allowed this to happen
and what can be done to prevent it from happening again. There will be
heightened security, misguided talk of revoking basic
freedoms. We'll go forward from this moment sobered, chastened, sad. But
determined, too. Unimaginably determined.

There is steel beneath this velvet. That aspect of our character is seldom
understood by those who don't know us well. On
this day, the family's bickering is put on hold. As Americans we will weep,
as Americans we will mourn, and as Americans
we will rise in defense of all that we cherish.

Still, I keep wondering what it was you hoped to teach us. It occurs to me
that maybe you just wanted us to know the depths
of your hatred.

If that's the case, consider the message received. And take this message in
exchange: You don't know my people. You don't
know what we're about. You don't know what you just started.

But you're about to learn.

Title: RE: NewYork Terrorist Attack

Thanks everyone.
As you can see I am working in New York City, and it was amazing how people reacted. Everyone was walking from the city over bridges and tunnels. People were helping each other in the way that no other time you would see.

About an hour ago I was on the bus going through Battery tunnel to FDR drive (who have been in New York knows how close it is to WTC) and it looked grim. But people are great and we will get through this.

If we are not going to respond and catch those responsible they will feel that they can do anything they want and not being responsible for it.

They have to pay.

By looking at the business names on the list you can imagine how many
victims had homes and families in other countries. This is much more than
just an American tragedy.

Thank you so much to those of you from other countries offering condolences.
And many heartfelt sympathies to you as you may have had friends, family,
fellow citizens on the planes, in the buildings, or on the ground, and are
anxiously awaiting any news.

I don't want to make too much of this but I would just like to say that the
thoughts of us Europeans are with the Americans right now. It's something
the politicians always say but truly the people on this side of the Pond
have been shocked and truly affected by what has happened.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected and your nation generally.

You don't think that that may cause more problems? Have you stopped to
consider that overseas meddling may have brought the wrath of Bin Laden onto
the American doorstep in response to what he sees as exactly the same
behaviour by US interests in his part of the world?

Just launching missiles won't stop someone whose whereabouts are unknown,
you'll probably just find yourselves under attack again.

RE: New Exchange Admin Questions

2001-09-14 Thread Snook, Kevin S (ITD)

That's what we need another Kevin on the list! At least you don't think you
know everything!

Backup is the best strategy. Ensure they are working. That might sound
obvious but the number of companies I know that don't check the success of
backups on a regular basis is staggering. Exchange is pretty good at
maintaining itself. Get a good anti-virus product installed, if you don't
have it already. Antigen is what I would choose. Ensure the size of your
mailboxes/store is suitable so that you can restore in an acceptable time.
Remember Exchange requires a full restore to get at one deleted mailbox.
Don't delete mailboxes for this very reason. Get yourself into hiding
mailboxes and making them disabled. Then after about 3 months (or whatever)
when no-one has said "What's happened to my mailbox?" you can delete them.
Also, remember Deleted Item retention which will allow you to get back
accidentally deleted emails. Set this as high as you can get away with. If
you use Public Folders, get hold of PFAdmin and PFInfo and use them
regularly.

I agree we should have tighter security in around in all of our airports,

I think a good way to combat this security problem and fight agianst

International flight. Dedicate one seat on each flight to an armed security
officer and I think this may drastically reduce hijacking of planes.

Post-SP4 CDO fixes - Q289606

2001-09-14 Thread Sargent, Rob

Hi! Is anyone aware of any issues with applying the post-SP4 'fix' for CDO
(as per Q289606).

We're having a problem with recurring meetings on our Boardroom Calendars
which run the AutoAccept script. Seems like consecutive recurring bookings
are OK, but requests such as for "every 2 weeks" seem to book the first and
then try to book the next week, and then decline, and then the Calendar
freezes. Q articles 281935 and 278954 describe our symptoms.Just
started in the last week or two.

Thanks!

Hi! Is anyone aware of any issues with applying the post-SP4 'fix' for
CDO (as per Q289606).

We're having a problem with recurring meetings on our Boardroom
Calendars which run the AutoAccept script. Seems like consecutive
recurring bookings are OK, but requests such as for "every 2 weeks" seem
to book the first and then try to book the next week, and then decline,
and then the Calendar
freezes. Q articles 281935 and 278954 describe our symptoms.Just
started in the last week or two.

Thanks!

Rob

Hi Missy,

Here's the message that I got when accessing the folder on the client side.

"Unable to display the folder. The contents of this public folder are
currently unavailable. Either the Microsoft Exchange Server computer
servicing this public folder is down or the public folder has not been
replicated to this date. See your administrator. will the isinteg command
resolve the problem by fixing the -pub.

on the other hand, how could i possibly delete the folders on the admin
console since i can't possibly access the properties of the said folder. I
was able to delete other folders before but i forgot the procedure already.
Thanks.

I agree we should have tighter security in around in all of
our airports, federal buildings, business centers etc.
I think a good way to combat this security problem and fight
agianst terrorism in our skies is to have a US Marshall on each domestic and
International flight.  Dedicate one seat on each flight to an armed
security officer and I think this may drastically reduce hijacking of
planes.
Does anyone agree?  Disagree?

Title: Backup

Need some help, please,

As a contingency in the event of a system crush, what needs to be done?

Do I need to build an exchange backup server with the same system settings?,  and if so can I restore my Private and Public information store to it?

I actually looked on the support.novell.com site as well as Exchange.

Do you have the same issues with different clients on the Exchange side?
Is it the same if you send HTML or plain text?
Please tell me you're not using Word as an email editor... please?
Then I'd look at the encoding.

Did you try with the Exchange5.0 client?

Although you and I naturally assume any right-thinking company would be
using Microsoft products exclusively, other businesses we send mail to
don't all share that belief. As I understand it, GroupWise IS the mail
client the recipient is using. What I am seeking, William, oh guru, is
anyone with experience interfacing Exchange with GroupWise who can tell me
whether this problem can be relieved by changing some configuration
setting on either the Exchange server or the Groupwise Exchange Gateway.
Or on either of the clients.

I have just recently inherited a small (25+ users) Exchange server that
I
will be responsible for. I have some basic understanding of Exchange
but I
was looking for any suggestions or recommendations on what basic
maintenance things I should be doing on a regular basis. The server is
backup up each night using Backup Exec with the Exchange agent.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

_Changing Exchange Passwords

2001-09-14 Thread William Smith

A member if my IS team has left our company and for security purposes we
will change our administrative passwords, which includes accounts used for
"log on locally" services.

Are there any gotchas that I should look out for when changing my exchange
administrator account password? My plan is to simply log out of any machines
that my have the exchange administrator account logged in, change the
password in Usermgr, then restart services and/or reboot servers as
necessary and watch to make sure that the services start properly.

Am I missing anything?

Thanks,

I was able to start both services successfully, but I did find some more
messages that were sitting in the queue which might choke it later
tonight. They had abnormal header information, but were all related to
the same application, primarily developer machines sending "buildall"
reports with numeric characters with a - before them. I'm not sure if
that's relevant, but it seems to choking on those messages only.

Interesting. I have seen this or similar on 4 unrelated sites in 5
weeks, all Exchange 5.5 SP4.

It looks like a delivery notification returning from xyz chokes in the
IMC and results in a DrWatson in Store.exe. Restarting the IS is simple,
but restarting the IMC gives another DrWatson and halts the IS.

The fast fix has been to clear out imcdata/in, remove imcdata/queue.dat
and restart the services.

The suspect delivery notifications look normal except for a large chunk
of ms-tnef stuff appended. I'm resisting the temptation to post an
example to the list ;)

Anyone else seeing this?

Cheers,
Marty

Thanks for your help.
It seems that one of the developers did a buildall in VC++ and had the
results mailed to him. For some reason that message wouldn't move
through the server. I'm not sure what to look for when he does it
again, but I'm going to use the MDB viewer tool to see what I come up
with.

Unable to move a mailbox

2001-09-14 Thread Eric Brouwer

Hello!

I am having trouble moving a mailbox from one Exchange 5.5 server to another
in the same site. If I start the move from the target server, I get a
client operation failed message at about 70% complete. In event viewer, I
get an event id:1151 message with a type:warning and category:rules. This
mailbox will not move. I looked at the users settings, and they don't have
any rules defined.

Any of you wise folks out there have any ideas?

In all cases, the recipient on the Groupwise system can see the TO: and

RE: HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable

2001-09-14 Thread John Allhiser

http://offline.home.cern.ch/offline/web/http_error_codes.html

It happened with alot of sites Tuesday, due to the amount of traffic.
You'll have to check your own server...
(which, BTW, lists HTTP error codes under Site Properties)

What does this error mean and how to you correct it? When I try to access
OWA by typing in http://server_name/exchange and providing correct logon
credentials it goes directly to a HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable page.
This is very strange to me because one day it worked fine and the next day
this starts happening - no changes made to the exchange server.

Exchange Server 2000
Windows 2000 SP2
Exchange Server SP1

Thanks for any help!

RE: Unable to move a mailbox

2001-09-14 Thread Hancock Dana Contr 62 CS/SCBO

Is antivirus running? Sometimes this causes an error. I have had mailboxes
that would not move no matter what i tried. I ended up exporting to a .pst
then moving the mailbox and importing the .pst. Hope this helps.

RE: New Exchange Admin Questions

2001-09-14 Thread Lefkovics, William

I've read it cover to cover.

Tony's experience with Exchange over all versions gives him a great
viewpoint for commenting on not only what is new in Exchange, but also how
it has changed and developed. The book covers 5.5 and 2000, but it is not a
"HowTo" book in the instructional sense. It isn't an administrators guide.

Can anyone comment on Tony's newer book entitled: "Microsoft Exchange Server
for Windows 2000: Planning, Design and Implementation". I've looked at some
reviews and can't tell if this book deals more heavily with Ex55, 2k, or
both. We currently run NT4/55, with plans to upgrade to Win2k in the near
future, but Exch2k is still several months off.

Thanks.

2Dc'S, one ex2k Member, lost one DC (2nd one)

2001-09-14 Thread Jean-Francois Bourdeau
Title: Message

Hi

Question 1 : I have 2 DCs with Ex 2k on a 3rd server (member)
When using AD User and Computer on the 2 DC's and looking at the user
properties, we don't see the exchange options (tabs) or Exchange Task
When using AD user and computer on the Ex2K server, the user properties
has
the Exchange tabs, and Exchange Task (righ clicking on the user) is there
Why ?
Question 2 :
Why does my exchange 2000 server (Member server) was having problem when my
2nd DC died ? In the Event viewer, the exchange server was trying to talk the
the second dc everytime I was trying to address an eMail to someone. I was
expecting him to talk to the 1st DC that was still there.
QUESTION 3 :
My second DC just died and Ex 2k server seem to try to talk to DC 2..
When
creating user, the smtp address [EMAIL PROTECTED] does not appear...IS it
beacause of lack of communication between the ex2k server and the second
DC
he is trying to reach (event viewer error on trying to contact the dead
DC. That was the second DC in the AD )
I have reinstalled a W2K machine as a server, did a DC promo and made it
again the 2nd DC's. Is it ok ? I have been told by MS that when adding a 2nd DC
to an AD that the SchemaMaster role is beeing magically transfered to the 2nd
DC. Then if my 2DC died, and was replace with a brand new 2nd DC' then the
ScheMaster role is may be not anywhere ?

RE: Priv DB size problem?

2001-09-14 Thread MBrownell

Turns out I was able to get 800 MB of whitespace after IS Maint. Still have
35MB free disk space. Will compact this weekend. This wasn't a matter of
sudden explosive growth but instead of negligence. I just happened to
install a demo copy of Spotlight on Exchange and it started alarming
immediately. Caught it in proverbial nick of time.

Thanks to all.

how much whitespace do you have?

Even though you have asked your users to do some housecleaning, check to see
who the largest offenders are and gibe them a hand cleaning.

Also, how big is your IS? what was it before the growth?

I noticed this morning that the priv.edb on one of my Exchange boxen
(nt40sp5 Ex55sp4) had grown to the point that there was only 35 MB of disk
space left! I immediately deleted up any old accounts (250MB worth) and
asked users to do some housekeeping as well. I then turned off deleted item
retention (had been set to 7 days). IS Maint was normally set between 3 and
6 AM - I reset this to always. Am I insane to think that online
defragmentation can help at this point? (one can always hope).
