Hey all, Does anyone have the above soundcard working under Mandrake 8.0? If so, did you have to install any special drivers to make it work, or did Mandrake find and configure it for you? I have one of those cards sitting on my desk right now, and I would like to make use of it in my Linux machine. Please let me know what was required in order to get this card up and running, if it doesn;t onvolve too much hassle, I should like to upgrade my soundcard this weekend. Thanks. Lyric Hi Lyric, I just finished installing an Aureal 8810 souund card in my computer. I had to download the file au88xx-1.1.2.tar.gz from the Internet. It took me a long time, but I finally got it configured. The first thing you have to do is compile the kernel. You do that by going to a command prompt and typing: urpmi kernel-source. This will set up everything you need. Then you make a directory named /aureal and copy the tar file in there and untar it. Then you switch to the other /aureal directory (which LM makes when you untar the file) and run the program 'make'. In other words, you would type in 'make install30', which is the model of your card. I hope this works for you the first time. I tried it many times before it worked. I hope it works the first time for you. Good luck. Guy GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! Re: [expert] Aureal AU8830 Superquad
Thanks Darin, I feel the same way about these Aureal cards. I haven't had this one for long, but it used to be fantastic under NT4 (I only stopped using it because I changed to a motherboard that had onboard Creative CT5880 sound which was good enough for me on my development machine. Cheers, Lyric Lyric, I have an Aureal SQ2500, which uses the 8830 chipset.. This is by far the best sound card out there.. It beats the SB Live hands down.. The drivers for it can be obtained here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/aureal You will want to get the 1.1.2 drivers, and patch number 407654. The patch will fix a bug caused problems with ARTSD. The patch can be obtained here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detailaid=407654group_id=810 9atid=308109 Once you untar and unzip the drivers, save the patch into the aureal directory under the name aureal.diff Then do 'patch -p1 aureal.diff' That will patch the source code.. Then do 'make' to compile Then do 'make install' to install the driver.. Its best to do this as root.. Thats all I had to do to get it to work.. After that, the drivers have worked flawlessly for me.. [expert] Graphics Apps for Linux
Hey everybody, I've got a friend running a graphic design business and he does a lot of 3D illustration as well as 2D illustration. His key applications are notepad, PhotoShop, and 3D Studio Max. Due to the high cost of licensing for all those programs, and Microsoft Windows 2000, he is looking for an alternative. Now, notepad is easy to find an alternate for, the alternate for photoshop is the Gimp, and there doesn't appear to be much of a learning curve between those two programs either as far as shortcut keys, etc. Unfortunately, I have no idea what a good alternative to 3D Studio Max would be... I'm hoping that you guys might be able to help out. If we can find a suitable alternative with only a slight learning curve, it may be enough for me to use to get him to try out a linux based solution on one of his PCs until he becomes comfortable enough to use it on all of them. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate hearing them. As well as any other Graphic design/web based programs that would be helpful in swaying him... Unfortunately, I don't do much graphics work, so I'm not too familiar with what is available. Thanks all, Lyric Current Linux kernel 2.4.3-20mdk uptime: 11 days 6 hours 27 minutes. Re: [expert] Ext2 - ReiserFS ?
I've been running ReiserFS eversince mandrake 7.2 first came out, and I have to say taht I've had no problems. After a dirty shutdown or a power failure, everything swings back up with no worries. I haven't seen any data corruption or loss of data. Currently I run it on 3 4.3 GB SCSI drives, 1 18 GB SCSI drive, and 1 20 GB IDE drive, no worries on any of them. This filesystem is fantastic. Cheers I'd have to agree there. Reiser works great. After a hard lockup or power failure you get a reading journal entries message for about two seconds then up the system comes. It's good stuff. I would highly recommend it over ext2 for sure. -dave - Original Message - From: Bruce E.Harris [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 06, 2001 3:28 PM Subject: Re: [expert] Ext2 - ReiserFS ? [expert] additional hardware
Hey all, in addition to the video card wuestion I fired off, after browsing through the parts at my disposal I noticed I have an Aureal Vrotex 2 superquad card (au8830) that isn't doing anything... Now I know that Aureal originally only released a set of beta drivers, but I was wondering if anyone has picked up what they left off... This was a great soundcard, and I wouldn't mind being able to use it again if it'll work under Linux. I'll only be using it for the occasional session of mpg123 :) The alternative is a tried and proven ES1371 based videocard that I've currently got running in this machine. Anyways, if someone could get back to me on that one I'd appreciate it as well. I think that's about it for now, so far the system is going to appear somewhat like this; AMD Duron 600 Gigabyte GA-7ZX-1 motherboard 512 MB SDRAM Adaptec 2940UW SCSI adapter 3 x 4.3GB UW SCSI hard drives 1 x Narrow SCSI CD-ROM drive 1 x 20GB IDE drive (purely for raw storage) Intel Pro 10/100 NIC Sound and video to be determined by the responses I get from your emails If you have any thoughts or suggestions please let me know... Dear all, I'm getting problems, that never happened under Mandrake 7.2, in running compiled c++ programs. Let's have an example: the Hallo world!. #include iostream int main () { cout Hallo world\n; return 0; } I write the code under Xemacs, save it, and compile with g++ Hallo.cpp -o Hallo The compilation works perfectly; I get the Hallo file in my directory, it has the rigth executable permissions and looks nice. Then I try to execute it with ./Hallo Nothing happens! I don't get any error message, but simply the command prompt. Neither if I try under KDE, GNOME, outside XWindows, as normal user or root. Note that I also tried to include the old version of the header (iostream.h) and nothing changes. The same procedure worked (also with much longer and complicated codes) under Mandrake 7.2; it works perfectly in the office with an old version of Suse; it works at home under MS-DOS (djgpp + rhide) (sad!). I'm using an AMD Athlon 1GHz, and I bought the Mandrake Powerpack 8.0 (italian version) just because I wanted to use the most updated Linux distribution to learn C++ and other programming languages. I installed Mdk 8.0 on the previous 7.2 partitions without any visible problem, choosing, the first time, the manual package picking. At last, desperate, I tried to re-install the power pack choosing the automatic package puicking, becasue I thought I forgot some important dependencies the first time. As I didn't find similar problems on many mailing lists (at least with a keyword search) I hope somebody may have an idea. Sorry for the details, but I don't need suggestions like try to execute the program with ./Hallo, instead of Hallo. Bye Fabio Current Linux kernel 2.4.3-20mdksmp uptime: 14 hours 4 minutes.
[expert] So many problems...
Alright, I'm sititng here trying to get everythign to play nice, but finding problems left and right Here are the two key problems I've got now, any help would be appreciated; 1. The Matrox drivers for the G450 Dual Head card (running in single head mode right now) aren't working properly. Everytime I try to exist from x, or change to a different tty, I get a black screen and a message from teh monitor that the scan fredquency is out of range. How do I stop this... While most of what I do will be in console, I'm using this to replace my windows machine as well so I need both, without rebooting... 2. Every tiem I try to access a disc in either the IDE CD-ROM drive or the SCSI CD-R/RW drive I get a kernel panic, cannot mount read/write filesystem. I can't live with that at all. Most of the data I need to replace on this machine is on CD-R discs now. Any help with these two problems would be much appreciated. The IDE CD-ROM drive is actually a Pioneer DVD-ROM 114 drive and the CD-R/RW drive is a SCSI Sony CRX140S. I am using correct SCSI termination on that drive. [expert] The big switch
Hi all, Currently I'm running two good machines, one for windows, and one for Linux which acts as my server. However, I'm picking up a new dual P3 motherboard and two 750 chips on monday, and was thinking, since I'm doing mostly C++ work it might be a better idea to just put Linux on that (originally that was going to replace my Windows machine). After thinking about it some more, I thought I might just switch over to Linux completely. Most of what I do is coding, and whatever else is just standard web browsing and email. I already use pine for all of my email. My only concerns are how well Mandrake 8.0 would support a dual P3 750 setup using the VIA 694 northbridge. I know in the past, with my current linux machine, I've had to set agpgart=apg_try_unsupported to use nvidia drivers for example. I just want to make sure that everything is going to work, and work well, before I spent a day setting everything up the way I like it. I'd like to get some reassurance from others that might have recently switched over completely, as well as people running SMP systems as workstations. Hey guys, I'm seeing some strange behaviour from my Linux server at the moment... I'm using it as a server for internet, files, and apache is bound to my internal interfaces (ports closed to the outside world for that). Anyways, it seems that squid is running away. Just out of the blue I looked over at my modem and the traffic lights were flashing like made. When I ran top it mentioned kapm-idled and squid were running at the top of the list. I shut squid down, and the strange traffic just stopped... I strated it back up and same as beforee. the traffic lights are going mad... Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Yes. That was my exact problem. That was why my internet connection wasn't working correctly when I tried to connect through my lan. Thanks. Anyone install the latest MandrakeFreq iso? It created the following 3 sym links : /etc/services - /etc/services /etc/resolve.conf - /etc/resolve.conf /etc/protocols - /etc/protocols That sure looks bad to me! No, these depend on a currently non existent AMD 760MP chipset. This is due out sometime within the next two quarters. Currently, there are no options for dual processor AMD systems. You'll just need to uncomment the chordmiddle option, and restart X Hello all, I just wanted to know if anyone else has had an issue with getting the mouse wheel to work on a Logitech optical mouse using either mdk 7.2 or 8.0 beta 3. So far, I have not been able to get mine to work and was wondering if this was just a driver issue. I have tried to get it going using imwheel, but that didn't work. Re: [expert] Netscape Locking Up
Oddly enough, I had the opposite problem As soon as I put 8.0 on, I could no longer access the internet through my lan. I tried running Mandrake 8.0b2 on one computer, while I left my good Linux computer running 7.2 (which it is running flawlessly right now). 8.0 can see and ping all the other computers on my lan, and it can ping through to my ISP if you specify the ISP's actualy IP address, but I can't access any webpages by the domain names. This has been baffling me for quite some time, and I have thus far attributed it to mandrake being beta, I'll be trying out beta 3 later this evening, but I'd like to knwo if anyone else has any information regarding this. I'm running a Windows NT4 server as a fileserver/proxy through a cable modem to the internet. Everythign works fine on Windows, and in Mandrake 7.2 on the same machine, but as soon as I try mandrake 8.0beta1 or beta2, I get nothing on the internet. Thanks Ya, with the 7.2 dist, Konqueror does not load java pages properly. Plus, I use the Netscape SSL IMAP functions to check email and have been unable to find another email client that supports multiple SSL IMAP accounts. :( I feel your pain, there. I had hopes for KMail, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen this time around. The 7.2 distro was bad for me all around. I went back to 7.1 almost immediately. It was weird -- after I put 7.2 on, I couldn't get my cable modem to work. I tried everything, and got nothing. I beat my head against the wall, recompiled older versions of programs, everything you can think of. Got nothing. I put 8.0b3 on that box, and up everything came, and away we went, cable modem and all. I'm still scratching my head on that one. -- Craig Sprout Network Administrator Crown Parts and Machine http://www.crownpartsandmachine.com
[expert] Compiling kernel 2.4.3 into Mandrake 7.2
Hi folks. I've been trying to compile different kernels into Mandrake 7.2, but have never been successful., I was able to compile a new kernel on a redhat box, but not a mandrake one. Since Mandrake is my primary choice for a linux distribution, I'd like to stick with it. Right now, I'm running the 2.2.17 kernel, I've got framebuffer support with my nvidia TNT2 card, and I run terminal at 1024x768 (vga mode 791). While compiling the kernel 2.4.3 (and following the instructions in the README file to the letter) I believe that I checked off everything as I should have. But, after tryingto reboot into the new kernel, I first get an error message about not being able to start the framebuffer, then it later dies off during boot. I've had absolutely no luck at all in recompiling a new kernel for this, and owuld like some expret advice. I have RTFM, The readme files and the documentation that came with the kernel were quite helpful, and I am certain taht I wouldn't have made it this far without them, but I really could use a hand here if possible Thanks
Re: [expert] Lost sight of point (was: WAIT!! STOP!!...)
The one thing that I'm noticing throughout this particular discussion is that everyone is blaming Mandrake and not looking at the fact that the K6-2 and K6-3 are actually i586 chips. How can Mandrake make their distribution recognize the K6 series as i686 chips when they will just cough and sputter dring bootup it you try to run i686 optimized code on them. This isn't Mandrake's problem. I would like to see Mandrake continue to bundle the i586 RPMs into the distribution to retain some backward compatability, just because I also run Mandrake on an old P233 that I have. But my primary machine is an AMD Duron 600, which will make use of this new optimized code with no problems. So I woudliek to see the benefits of theenhanced speed as well as the ability to keep running the latest distributions on my 233. Thanks "Jose M. Sanchez" wrote: Eh, except 7.2 installs just fine on a P-90 and K5. It's only the 486 and 386's who are left out. The i586 vs i686 worries are somewhat ungrounded. [expert] Linux RAID capabilities
