Re: [expert] Getting a 100% linux compatible scanner

2003-10-13 Thread Trevor Rhodes
Diego,

 OK, I'll have a look at 1660.

I just priced a 1660 here in Australia and they want around $400 for them.
They have been superceded though by the 1670 which is useless for Linux so
far. Oh well, back to the search

Re: [expert] Single login server for Linux clients

2003-10-01 Thread Trevor Rhodes
James,

I wish I could help, but alas no. As soon as my youngest daughter packs her
bags and goes away somewhere I´m reclaiming my that computer and doing the
same, so don´t be surprised when I start asking you how it´s done. :^)

What is the best method to have one central Linux server handling login
authentication for Linux and windows machines?
 What I would like to achieve is;
 1) Provide only network server logins for Linux boxes and have no local
 accounts on any Linux machine.
 2) Have /home/$USER reside on the centralized Linux login server and not on
 local machines.
 3) Ditto for windows machines (I know I can achieve this with Samba for
windows clients, unless there is a better way)
If anyone has this type of environment set up, I would greatly appreciate
 your help and advice.

Re: [expert] SpamAssassin 2.5

2003-06-14 Thread Trevor Rhodes
You need to get spamd up and running. You can bring up mandrake control
center, go to system, and then to drakxservices. Enable spamd at bootup.

How do you do that if it is not listed though?

You could start it immediately by doing, as root/superuser
 /etc/init.d/spamd start.

Did that.

Re: [expert] SD Card Reader in Mandrake 9.1?

2003-06-08 Thread Trevor Rhodes
Olof,

Open KdiskFree and see if it is listed. If so right click and select open in
Filemanager. Let us know how you go.

My Toshiba Tecra 9000 running Mandrake 9.1 has a built in SD card reader
(reports itself as SD Type A Controller) on the PCI bus.

Does anyone know if it will be possible to get Mandrake to recognize it?

 Thanks ahead,

By entering your address and requesting an encrypted email you agree to
allow Advanced Web Promotions to communicate with you via email about
our products and services. You can be removed from this mailing list at
any time. The frequency of the mailing will be around two emails per
 month.

That was enough to discourage me from using the service though.

Then use this one with a fake email address and when it gives you the code,
all you have to do is switch it with your own real email address.

Re: [expert] VMWare /usr/src/linux/include for 9.1

2003-03-01 Thread Trevor Rhodes
 linux-2.4.21pre4-Xmdk

Where X is the version number of the kernel it's source for... IF I'm
right VMware needs this to match the number of the running kernel on you
box. Make sure it does. If not it's worth it to install the upgraded
kernel (they have improved it a lot) also make sure that the symlink
linux points to the src directory that matches your running kernel (you
might have more than one and it could be pointing at the wrong one.

I downloaded and installed what I thought was the right kernel file. It
worked, but still 12 hours too late. Nevermind, I still got done what I had
to be it in a more roundabout fashion. Thanks people.

sounds like you need to install the kernel source. Try

 urpmi kernel-source

Tried that and it tells me I already have it installed. If that is so, where
are those files? Talk about confused!!! :^)

Re: [expert] How do I update the urpmi database for cooker?

2003-02-24 Thread Trevor Rhodes
This error can also be produced if a static repository, such as a main
source - in the terminology used by the Easy Urpmi Configurator, found at
http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/ - is for whatever reason unavailable at the
moment that the ftp request was sent; if that server does not accept the
anonymous ftp login (due to having reached its maximum number of users,
for example), urpmi will fail with this error.

I was able to login and the transfer of files began. Everytime I hit the
third file it stopped with that error. I tried three times before giving up
and each time the third file was a different one. After doing what Bongani
suggested to me on the Cooker list (urpmi.update -a -c -f //Updates all
databases) everything updated just fine.

My thanks to all who tried to help.

Benjamin,

Make sure you have a Cooker ftp source defined.

This may be the biggest problem. I can't seem to get one updated.
Which sources are working for you?

 Have you tried http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php?

Got it done last night with approx 850Mb of updates. I don't know if my

So Richard and I decided to try to catch [the small shark].
With a great deal of strategy and effort and shouting, we managed to
maneuver the shark, over the course of about a half-hour, to a sort of
corner of the lagoon, so that it had no way to escape other than to
flop up onto the land and evolve. Richard and I were inching toward
it, sort of crouched over, when all of a sudden it turned around and --
I can still remember the sensation I felt at that moment, primarily in
the armpit area -- headed right straight toward us.
Many people would have panicked at this point. But Richard and
I were not many people. We were experienced waders, and we kept our
heads. We did exactly what the textbook says you should do when you're
unarmed and a shark that is nearly two feet long turns on you in water
up to your lower calves: We sprinted I would say 600 yards in the
opposite direction, using a sprinting style such that the bottoms of
our feet never once went below the surface of the water. We ran all
the way to the far shore, and if we had been in a Warner Brothers
cartoon we would have run right INTO the beach, and you would have seen
these two mounds of sand racing across the island until they bonked
into trees and coconuts fell onto their heads.

Having numerous Mandrake 9 installations here it can be a rather large amount

least that way I only have to download them once instead of once for each
