[FairfieldLife] Movie review: In Time
Pardon me, buddy, but can I bum four minutes for a cup of coffee? That's a line that you might hear in the time ghettos of the world portrayed in Andrew Niccol's In Time. As he demonstrated in The Truman Show and Gattaca and S1mone, Niccol has a different relationship with reality than most of us. In the world of In Time, humans have a genetically-engineered expiration date. As they turn 25, a digital readout on their arms starts counting down the year they've got left. When the clock runs out, they die. Except that this only happens to some of them. You can extend your lifespan you see, by earning or borrowing or stealing time from someone else. If you're from the poor time zones, when your countdown clock starts approaching zero you work double shifts to keep the grim reaper away. If you're from New Greenwich, and come from time in the same way that people in Greenwich CT come from money, your readout probably has hundreds of years on it, and you can effectively live forever. One of the perks of this is that when you buy time after turning 25, you stop aging. This leads to a few WTF moments such as Olivia Wilde playing Justin Timberlake's mother :-), but is also funny when, after scoring a shitload of time, he attends a New Greenwich party and is introduced to the host's mother, wife, and daughter, all of whom appear to be the same age. All of this could make for an interesting movie, especially set against the OWS rich-vs-poor dramas we see all around us these days. The concepts are certainly there to work with. Sadly, I'm not convinced that Niccol did as much with them as he could have. Suffice it to say that the Bonnie And Clyde plotlines were not as well thought out as they could have been. But at least it wasn't Just Another Cliche Science Fiction Plot That I've Seen Hundreds Of Times Already, so I guess it was worth the 109 minutes I spent on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdadZ_KrZVw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdadZ_KrZVw

God never had only ONE son, we are all the sons of daughters of the ONE God who lives in our hearts as our own soul, which can never be taken away nor live in an eternal damnation. The concept of eternal damnation is a blasphemy of the teachings of Jesus Christ and the concept of an all loving merciful God. Almost everybody even up in Minnesota might well be aware, that Sa Re/Ri Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni and Sa are the Do Re Mi, etc. of Indian Classical Music, whether Hindustani (North-ish) or Carnatic (South-ish). Just heard Magnus Mikael Pide von Hertzen aka Mikko von Hertzen (Mick from/out of Hearts?) from the rock band 'von Hertzen Brothers' claim that he once heard an Indian performer to tune up, or whatever, the note 'sa' for some five minutes to make sure he's got it absolutely right, whilst the audience was completely silent! RESPONSE: You're too subtle for all of us, Curtis. But I declare your response here to Judy BS. But it is Curtis BS, which, as I say, is something more complex and intricate than can be grasped or understood by a mind less than your own. But I will make a bet with you: I am confident there is a dark side to Curtisand it is possible to provoke this unacknowledged side of you. Are you willing to go on the record and say: No, I don't have a dark side, and no one therefore can draw out of me that which does not exist? you make up your own reality. You deconstruct the reality of others. You impose your own context. You take away the context of other people. Your positivity is a form of intense and brilliant negativity. Why is this positive intention and modus operandi negative? Because it simply ignores, tramples over, destroys, banishes the reality of another person who would argue with you. You are both seductive and aggressive. And your ruthlessness knows no mercy. You are such a master of yourself, Curtis, that you manipulate reality. I have never known anyone who could do this. Your response to my letter implies that I am flighty, neurotic, paranoid, hyper-sensitive, and deceivedthat is, on the basis of misinterpreting you. I do not recognize these qualities in myself. But you see in your response, and then in this response to Judy, you cunningly uphold your game. And everyone who reads what you sayto me, now here to Judythinks to themselves: Well, I guess Robin and Judy were wrong, because the righteousness of Curtis, even the saintliness of Curtis, shines through here. And first Robin, then Judy, are refuted. It just feels this must be so. But this is just your power to remake reality into the image of what suits your own purposes. No human being can claim to do what you do, Curtis. It is a kind of scary and ultimate self-suficiency that is born of a tremendous hatred of the authority of reality. Something like that. But I was wondering whether you would, because this really means something to me, put in a good word for me with Barry. Can you do that? Like tell him you are pretty sure I am not a faggot. Willing to do that? Because, as you can imagine, what he said to me was pretty hurtful, although of course I tried to slough it off with my predictable irony. But it has left a scar. Hey, Curtis! This whole post that you just read here, it was my attempt to pull my old extreme metaphysical theatre on you! I was just doing an Andy Kaufman. Really. But do you know what? I THINK IT ALMOST WORKED. What do *you* say? No, I love you, Curtis, and you are a beautiful human being. This has been my experience from the beginning. I am not about to change my mind now. Please give me some of that old time positivity in your response to all this. I am trying to get my black belt in mind-f**k. As I am sure you can see in reading this post. May I join forces with you and give Judy hell on your behalf? No, you don't need any help, Curtis. And I sayin all seriousnessyou are the best. It's just what you are best at is not, when it really comes down to it, a nice thing. My opinion, mind you. And remember: In responding to this, Be Positive. [FairfieldLife] Movie review: Another Earth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8hEwMMDtFY If you're up for a thoughtful science fiction film that manages to pull off deep insight with almost zero special effects, this one is for you. Made on an almost zero budget by director Mike Cahill and his co-writer/star Brit Marling, this film was entered quietly at Sundance last year and wound up winning the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize as well as the Special Jury Prize. Brit Marling is phenomenal in the role she wrote herself, as a young woman whose life changes in an instant because of a mistake she made when she first heard of the sudden appearance of a second mirror-image Earth in our skies. Filled with regret for her mistake, she enters a contest to voyage to this other planet before even learning that it's filled with not just people like us, but US. For each one of us on this earth, there is a counterpart on Earth 2. She's hoping that there is some possibility that things worked out better for her counterpart there in this other reality, and that she'll be able to gain some of that comfort for herself. Slow, thoughtful, and lovely, this is about as far from what you'd normally think of as a science fiction film as you can imagine. But that's part of what makes it so interesting. IMO it's worth a rental for those not afraid of thinking, and occasionally even feeling.

At least now you know what she really thinks of you. Curtis has known exactly what I really think of him for quite a few years now. We have disagreements concerning certain ethical principles, such as his refusal to defend anybody from unfair attack by one of his buddies, while often defending a buddy from criticisms made by one of those the buddy has attacked. And no, I don't think he does it to fuck with me; I'm only one of the people he refrains from defending. His failure to defend Robin from your attacks are one of the most recent examples. He does it in an attempt to avoid conflict with people he likes, even when they're clearly in the wrong.

It's Maharishi-like: Every post is a perfect opportunity to start an argument, and every argument is the perfect opportunity to re-run the obsessions I have already prepared. :-) Good fantasy image of her. Explains pretty much everything. BREAKING NEWS! Barry is beginning to realize his notions about me are fantasies! This is hopeful, folks. Maybe he's making some progress at emerging from his solipsistic Barryworld. Could be overwhelming, though, for him to start confronting reality after all these years; we need to be gentle with him as he does so, or he may find it all too much and retreat again. Can we dare to expect he'll bring az with him out of the fog? Stay tuned...

[FairfieldLife] Re: Movie review: In Time
Still tripping on this movie somewhat, it strikes me that what is interesting about it is the very thing that I find interesting in other good science fiction. That is, the minutiae of everyday life that would be taken for granted if you suspend disbelief and assume that the assumptions in the film are true. What would be the *environment* created by a world in which you can live forever, if you can afford to? Niccol's film does IMO more justice to these minutiae than it does to important things like plot and good storytelling. For example, he just *nails* the insight that the first thing that would happen to the rich who realize that they can live forever would be paranoia about being killed or accidentally dying. The rich in this film really feel that they cannot go anywhere or do anything unless 1) it is in their own exclusive, protected neighborhood (time zone in the film), and 2) that they can't even do that unless accompanied by one or more bodyguards. That is SO what they'd do. Another detail is that they'd be bored shitless by their lives. Living in a protective bubble is as dissatisfying in this fictional world as living in Fairfield or any other pseudo-utopia is in the real one. I really liked the detail in the film of real do-gooders opening time shelters where those whose clocks are about to run out can come and get a handout of another day of life. That was real. People in such a world would do that. And they'd be the only ones worth knowing and hanging with. I also loved the detail of how the richest man in the world, the New Greenwich zillionaire whose net worth consists of literally millions of years of time, refuses to pay a ransom for his daughter, to save her life. I've known people in Greenwich CT who would do the same thing. Their responsibility to their shareholders overrides their responsibility to their family. And I liked the idea of a kind of time poker. Two people sit down at a table, link wrists so as to exchange time credits with each other, and play the game all in. That is, the first person to run out of credits dies...right there, on the spot. And I like the hero of the movie's insight into how to always win. That's really it, and the secret that the samurai knew. To be undefeatable in a battle to the death, you have to be comfortable with having already died. Those who are attached to life never are. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, turquoiseb no_reply@... wrote: Pardon me, buddy, but can I bum four minutes for a cup of coffee?

[FairfieldLife] Prime Minster Dr Bevan Morris reported on recent advances in the Movement.
Maharishi's Global Family Chat Summary October 28, 2011 Prime Minster Dr Bevan Morris reported on recent advances in the Movement. Dr Morris began by commenting on how powerful the three Vedic performances were on the 24th, 25th, and 26th in enlivening the qualities of Dhanvantari, Hanuman and Mahalakshmi. The Vedic Pandits have become very mature and dignified in their glorious role of reciting softly in the low and slow way Maharishi trained them. So they are Self-referral when reciting the nitya and apaurusheya (eternal and uncreated) sounds of Veda. Maharishi said the Pandits provide a `turnkey operation' for bringing heaven on earth they unlock the special evolutionary quality of the day for the whole world, so we can accomplish in a few hours what would otherwise take a long time. For example on Mahalakshmi day the quality of wealth, affluence, and success is awakened on the physical, mental and spiritual levels for the whole world, and it happened that the European leaders found a solution to the economic problems on Mahalakshmi day after many months of trying. The indications of a great change in the fortune of the world have been increasing lately: Shankaracharya Maharaj of Jyotir Math telephoned Maharaja Raam on Mahalakshmi day to give his blessings to everyone in the whole family of the Global Country of World Peace The first courses have begun in the Brahmasthan (geographical centre) of India. The new course of listening to the Vedic sounds while watching the model of Veda in human physiology has been an extraordinary and unexpected success at Maharishi University of Management, USA. People are having wonderful experiences of higher states of consciousness and healing of old health problems. The first course had 50 people, and the 5th course had 350, with people unable to fit into the hall. What was thought to have been developed by Maharishi as a teaching aid turns out to be a powerful technique for enlightenment. The course will be offered at Meru by Drs Alaric and Cynthia Arenander in December. Experiences of higher states of consciousness also continue to grow and refine in the Invincible America Assembly, leading the way for enlightenment for each of us and for world peace. The Purusha Capital of the Western World in West Virginia, USA, is ready for occupation within a week. It has been a huge work of dedication and the presence of the Purusha group close to the capital, Washington D.C., will have a beneficial effect for America. Purusha held their 30th Anniversary recently, during which Raja Luis offered three pieces of news that took place on that auspicious day: ETA formally renounced violence. The government of a major country in Latin America undertook to train and support a professional group of 1,500 Yogic Flyers the square root of 1% of the population to create invincibility for the nation. President Chissano announced that he will re-establish the group of Yogic Flyers for Mozambique, and then he will visit other heads of state and tell them to do the same for their nations. Raja Luis also gave the news that a delegation from the congress of Brazil visited Maharishi Free School in the UK. They were so impressed by the quality of education, and above all by the quality of the young students, that they signed an agreement for all the students of one state of their nation to learn Transcendental Meditation about a million students. Dr Morris said that every country should invite their government to send a delegation to the UK school or to the Maharishi School in the USA. It is the taste, the experience, that really impresses people and changes their perception. Some very good guests have visited the MUM/Maharishi Vedic City/Fairfield community recently, including a top Indian leader. It very quickly becomes clear from visitors' interactions with students, and the experience of meditating in the Golden Domes, that Maharishi created a new civilization there that is not only supporting enlightened individuals, but is also transforming the nation by raising the collective consciousness. A visit to the school also makes it clear that a new generation is coming that is born for this knowledge and reality. NEW SERVICE now available for Maharishi Channel 3 on the iPad and iPhone. WTF? Jim got this right. I genuinely thought Az was joking, still do. Maybe so, but az's usual toxic mean-spiritedness makes it hard to tell. Agreed. But the whole point was about dry humor so it fit. Fit what?? What does dry humor have to do with toxic mean-spiritedness? I made my case for how I saw it already. az and Barry and Curtis and Vaj all stick together to defend each other from criticism and attack each other's critics; haven't you noticed? (Barry and az and Vaj do most of the attacking; Curtis mostly plays defense.) You know what would work better if you were trying to make this false case? If you didn't do it in the context of you and Jim whose positive interactions with me are both evidence that I do not act this way here. Well, it's not a false case, but please note (how did you miss it??) that I specifically exempted you from the attack component (check the parenthetical). I did catch that. I was objecting to the pack thing. Nice sidestep, but not convincing. Labeling the truth as a sidestep doesn't work outside your own mind. I don't care what anyone thinks of anyone else here. You know what would work better if you were trying to make this false case? If you didn't do it in the context of your defense of az to Jim. Your framing of a defense for Az is erroneous. I believed it was a misread by Jim and I could be wrong. It isn't a defense if the person misread the intention of a satire to point that out. If Az comes out with a follow-up that he really meant that stuff and I defended him somehow, that would be a defense. Well, that's a very creative distinction, but I'm not buying it. *Of course* it's a defense to suggest that someone misread somebody else's intentions. And of course it contradicts your claim that you don't care what anyone thinks of anyone else here. You cared enough about what Jim said about az to attempt to correct what you believed was his misimpression. No it doesn't. If Az and Jim hate each other, it is none of my business. I was clearing up what I believe is a miscommunication. And if it fit your agenda, you would see this obvious distinction. But I could be wrong. Maybe Az used the chance to get in some shots on Jim and Jim was reacting appropriately to the actual intent. I was just giving my opinion. Plus which, as I went on to point out, you've done the same thing regarding Barry and Vaj and Ruth: You've also defended Barry to me a number of times, and we had a whole thread in which you defended Vaj; and on one occasion awhile back you took me severely to task for what you perceived (incorrectly) to be an attack on Ruth. And those are just three examples. No comment from you. If you are making a case that I often see things the way people I seem to have more intellectual affinity with and therefor are more likely to see it their way, guilty as charged. And I am not imposing some kind of rule about when I will jump in here. But I have been pretty consistent staying out of your deal with Barry and am doing so with the Robin Barry deal. I can easily imagine defending Ruth because I had a lot of intellectual common ground with her. And it isn't defending Vaj to voice my opinion about his teacher's status. You are couching these interactions in the language of your feud perspective. We are all choosing the interactions we want with each other. Everyone is sleeping in the bed they made themselves here. Yup. I'm just describing the bed you've made for yourself, which involves defending certain of your buddies from criticism, but never defending the folks those buddies attack. (Makes it a little awkward when one of the buddies you normally defend attacks one of your more recently established buddies.) No it doesn't. Robin is doing fine defending himself and my parodies are working just fine in conveying my POV on it all. How Robin

My speculation is all the secondhand smoke they were exposed to resulted in some seriously unhappy kitties. I have to admit, AZ, that among all of the many theories proposed here on FFL to try to explain why Judy is so chronically angry and why she acts the way she does, your cat lady theory is the best. Doesn't it just FIT? An already-angry 70-year-old woman with no friends, living alone in Buttfuck, NJ, and what happens? The authorities come and take away her dozens of cats for public health reasons. But they don't take away the cigarettes, so she fires one up, allows the nicotine to further poison her already-poisonous system, and decides to post to FFL, thinking, I NEED an argument. So she starts one with Curtis, quickly turning it into an opportunity to dump on Vaj, since he won't argue with her. Then she starts another argument with Mike, quickly turning that into an opportunity to dump on Barry, because he won't argue with her, either.

Well, there are agents involved, payments on a house, upkeep on mandaps, bribes, the usual corrupt 3rd world stuff. So, we're talking $60 a day for a very experienced pundit, a pundit who works with the Shank. Yes, a lot of money. But I'm talking about priests who can pull down that kind of money, the competition for their serves are so keen. No prasad but get to hear the sankalpa, live, from India. Do they work? Heck yes. Most amazing things, many of which I can't share right now because they involve MUM faculty (hahahaha). Most amazing lurches forward in comprehension and clarity of consciousness in myself and the group I pay the sponsorship fees for. Very amazing lurches forward. Nothing like AOL, TM/TMSP, that sort of pablum. 5 priest a day have the same effect, IME, as 500+ Maharishi (TM) pundits, 500+ former Maharishi (TM) pundits. So about as much progress as one can make without turning into a cinder goes for $300 a day then couple times a month, every single senior temple priest in the Kancipurinam area, a couple dozen of them. That's in the thousands of $ a day.Don't try this at home. The purification of the subtle body causing changes in the gross body can be pretty gruesome. Tonight is the last night of 16 days of Rahu/Ketu/Lakshmi/Mryityunjay with 5 priests. Close to horrifying stuff but once again, pretty amazing sharpening of experiences, intellect and massive increases in, well, Sport of Nature.

[FairfieldLife] MOVIE REVIEW: KUMARE, a documentary about fake guru
You are all great beings and you must stop pretending that you are not. - Kumare I found Kumare to be a surprisingly sweet and gentle, albeit extremely controversial, documentary; which was conceived and directed by, Vikram Gandhi, a New Jersey-born American of East Indian decent. It was beautifully filmed with excellent audio. The documentary follows Gandhi as he playfully dresses up as an Indian Guru and watches the response he gets in India and in the U.S. Then he decided to see if his alter ego as an Indian Guru, could get a following. So he went to Phoenix where he knew no one and started his own teachings as the Indian Guru, Kumare. His teachings consisted of made-up chants, fake yogic postures and a blue light meditation which he created himself. He also spoke in an Indian accent, dressed in robes, wore his hair long and behaved in a way that made people think he was not familiar with western culture. After all, putting a steering wheel on the Unified Field of All the Laws of Nature so you could drive must have had it's price! Pay up. What I'd heard is that many groups had been founded, not really different from pricey TM yagya groups, but for *much* less. There had been a cottage industry in former Maharishi pundit groups. Most of them sprung up in Fairfield. There was one group, I'll have to drag out some emails, run by a governess in Fairfield who made you feel you were trying to chat with the Fireside Theater. But boy did they have a really beautiful set of teen boys in purple, red and green silk robes. Arrayed in circles. Stunning. A complete waste of money. Then of course a lot of sidhas went to Dixit, a real sham artist. You paid something like $600 to have some pubescent boy chant 108,000 reps of the appropriate mantra then light a bit of a fire at the end. The bottom dollar is probably Yagyas By Choice. They have/?had? a sponsorship where the priests ran your chart, came up with 9-10 transit or dasas that needed to be appeased kind of every month during the year at $600 for something like 11 pundits for 8 days. This group actually has its own Vedic village which the Canadian organizers can't get within 200 kliks of because Westerners are forbidden to travel there. Too many missionaries trying to save souls rubbed the indigenous peoples there the wrong way and there were murders on both sides. They had yagyas all the way up to $500,000 with 3-4 weeks of a couple hundred pundits. A pundit cost between $0.90 to $1.50/hr based on whether or not they actually knew some of the mantras or not. YBC claimed, like most other wannabes that they had put back into the yajnas/ yagyas/yagnas/whatevers what Maharishi left out. Are you saying that's the reason for the high price of TMO yagyas, they use more pundits? Absolutely not. I have some tapes of Maharishi performing a homa to Lakshmi with an intimate group of SSRS aged pundits in Vlodrup. Maharishi has such palsy, is blind and deaf and has to be handed items to throw into the fire then have his hand guided to the fire then the item picked up and thrown into the fire as he couldn't toss more than 5 feet. And those were taped in the 2000s.Maharishi (TM) yagyas weren't worth a damn, which is why the $$$monied$$$ ones of VC attend their own yagnas, with the for hire itinerant priests they retain. [FairfieldLife] Octopus consciousness
From a piece in Orion magazine, Deep Intellect: Inside the mind of the octopus, by Sy Montgomery On an unseasonably warm day in the middle of March, I traveled from New Hampshire to the moist, dim sanctuary of the New England Aquarium, hoping to touch an alternate reality. I came to meet Athena, the aquarium's forty-pound, five-foot-long, two-and-a-half -year-old giant Pacific octopus. For me, it was a momentous occasion. I have always loved octopuses. No sci-fi alien is so startlingly strange. Here is someone who, even if she grows to one hundred pounds and stretches more than eight feet long, could still squeeze her boneless body through an opening the size of an orange; an animal whose eight arms are covered with thousands of suckers that taste as well as feel; a mollusk with a beak like a parrot and venom like a snake and a tongue covered with teeth; a creature who can shape-shift, change color, and squirt ink. But most intriguing of all, recent research indicates that octopuses are remarkably intelligent Only recently have scientists accorded chimpanzees, so closely related to humans we can share blood transfusions, the dignity of having a mind. But now, increasingly, researchers who study octopuses are convinced that these boneless, alien animals--creatures whose ancestors diverged from the lineage that would lead to ours roughly 500 to 700 million years ago--have developed intelligence, emotions, and individual personalities. Their findings are challenging our understanding of consciousness itself Read more: http://www.orionmagazine.org/index.php/articles/article/6474 Beautiful, touching story, not too long. Very much worth a read. And even if you don't read the piece, don't miss this remarkable video (about a minute); guaranteed to blow your mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckP8msIgMYE
