Yeah. I watched the Passion, Grace and FIre concert (Lucia, diMiola and
McLaughlen) with a bunch of people from the U of AZ guitar dept.

One comment stuck in my mind: they've proved they are all mutants [because of
 their speed].

We all agreed they were outstanding performers but from *OUR* perspective it
got kinda old to hear nothing but fast [that could only be played by mutants]
 riffs over and over.

 Real musicians appreciate subtlety.

I wonder, how much does it mean, that as a marquis, Segovia
perhaps could afford highest quality instruments?

Well, the price tag might not always be the most important
feature of an instrument. Had Hendrix used, say, a Gibson
SG instead of Fender Stratocaster (as I understand it, lacking
humbucker pick-ups), he might not have become
such an overnight sensation... LoL!

I seem to recall Segovia's first concert instrument was a rental. He approached
the best guitar maker i the city and asked if he could rent it for his first
concert. IIRC, the guitar maker was so impressed by Segovia's request that he
didn't charge him anything.

An excellent guitar makes it easier for a master to bring out the best sound,
but it is probably wasted on a lesser talent. Past a certain point, you just
don't have the skills to even appreciate what a good instrument is, letalone
what it can do.

That said, I'm happing with my guitar.

[FairfieldLife] Mind and Life XXIV

2012-07-15 Thread Vaj
Mind and Life XXIV: An Insider View By David Vago, Ph.D.
I woke up the morning of April 24, 2012 thinking, “There will not be many days
like this in my life. I will be giving a talk to His Holiness, the Dalai Lama,
along with five of my Contemplative Science colleagues and friends.” My heart
fills with joy and gratitude when I think about the opportunity.

The six of us represented hundreds of young investigators, like ourselves, all
inspired by the Dalai Lama. The meeting was particularly significant because,
after 25 years of dialogue with His Holiness, it was the first time
junior-level investigators were given the opportunity to share their research
with him. We represent a new generation of scientists who are willing to
examine some of the more difficult and even taboo aspects of deep contemplative
transformation. As such, we are right in the center of an emerging paradigm
shift for science. All aspects of basic and clinical science and society are
now infused with mindfulness. Mindfulness represents more than its literal
definition. It represents the paradigm shift towards investigating the mind
from the first-person perspective—the new introspection. It is the key to the
door of consciousness for all scientists to explore and the public to embrace
for mental health.

His Holiness’ Feedback
The six of us were chosen to represent the Francisco J. Varela Awards program,
the primary catalyst for seeding the field with young scientists investigating
contemplative practice. Each of us brought something unique to the table from
all across the globe. The room was filled with board members and guests
surrounding us like proud parents and transmitting their wisdom. His Holiness
was very attentive and present with each one of us as we took turns presenting
our most relevant research in the short amount of time allotted. Although
brief, the conference was a humbling honor.

One by one, we filled our 20 minutes completely, summarizing our findings in
only a few slides, and the feedback from His Holiness was invaluable. To each
of us, he provided some sense of recognition and appeared to place high
importance on the work we all are doing. I kept thinking that if His Holiness
thought my models of Mindfulness are “quite good,” I should be able to provide
my reviewers with that reference! He ended our time together with a lasting set
of strongly emphasized remarks that none of us will be able to dismiss. With a
firm finger he pointed to each one of us and led the charge like a football
coach before the big game. He said that each one of us is responsible for
reducing suffering in this world. We must continue doing rigorous research for
the benefit of the world. I guess we know what we’ll be doing for the next 35
years! Truly inspiring.

[FairfieldLife] TM's biggest problem?

2012-07-15 Thread cardemaister

An âyurvedic technician told me that surprisingly many
TMers, like myself, have high blood pressure.

The obvious reason is that many people here in Finland,
and probably many other countries also, started doing
TM in the hopes of being able to reduce their BP medication,
and stuff.

I don't believe TM helps a lot if ones hypertension is
due to being genetically predisposed to it. I feel like
some component of my BP regulation system (which, I believe
is quite complicated) is especially weak, because my BP is like a yo-yo: it
seems to skyrocket for almost no reason at all!

I think Maharishi hoped that TM would make healthy people
more healthy, but the problem seems to be that people who
feel themselves to be healthy usually might not have any
interest in meditation?!

In an independent systematic review of BP and different meditative and
body-based interventions, Transcendental Meditation was the worst intervention
for lowering BP. Since TM mantras are imbalanced they tend to increase pitta
and vata, thus they will tend to increase BP (from an Ayurvedic perspective):

https://www.box.com/shared/yqhm9ex6b0

The only intervention that was worse has “health education”. Progressive Muscle
Relaxation (PMR) was about the same as Transcendental Meditation.

The best interventions are hatha yoga and Tai Chi.

1. Tai Chi

2. Yoga + biofeedback

3. Qi gong

4. Mindfulness based cognitive therapy

5. Biofeedback

6. Yoga

7. Relaxation Response

8. Buddhist Meditation

9. Rest/relaxation

10. Mantra meditation

11. Transcendental Meditation

Current science supports the use of CoQ-10, Fish Oil and Vitamin D for lowering
BP without the use of meds.

The *mystery* of some of those scenes is so absorbing.
Some good writer should pick a few of them and create
stories around them.

Some of them are clearly staged, people acting out for
the benefit of the cameras. That's another category in
itself.

Really endlessly fascinating, for me anyway.

Thanks John but none of this is my doing, they were found
buy a guy called Jon Rafman. I happened upon them in The
Grauniad this morning:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2012/jul/14/google-street-view-new-photography

They remind me of some pioneering 50s US photographers
whose names I forget, but they took shots of faded
Americana like giant empty malls and forgotten towns
on disused highways. Great stuff and really stirring to
me for some reason. Urban landscapes - a man made world
that makes us look like we don't fit into it anymore. Maybe.

There are some good links in the above article, if I
ever remember the names of the photographers I've seen
I'll post those.

I was looking out my bedroom window when the google st view

but they blurred me out of the shot!

Is that the AHRQ's report?

I couldn't find that particular chart in the report, but one criticism leveled
at the report by TM researchers is that they didn't include dozens of studies
on TM and yet didn't mention that they even considered those studies in order
to reject them in their analysis, despite being told about them and given a
copy of them for review (Collected Papers Volume 5 was entirely ignored even
though they were given a copy).

Other criticisms can be found here:

http://www.TruthAboutTM.org/truth/TMResearch/RebuttalofAHRQReview/index.cfm

A more recent meta-analysis of TM and BP was published a few years later than
included 9 studies instead of only five. Naturally, since it found results
different than the AHRQ study, it is touted as refuting the AHRQ analysis.

I don't believe TM helps a lot if ones hypertension is

some component of my BP regulation system (which, I believe
is quite complicated) is especially weak, because my BP is like a yo-yo: it
seems to skyrocket for almost no reason at all!

I think Maharishi hoped that TM would make healthy people
more healthy, but the problem seems to be that people who
feel themselves to be healthy usually might not have any
  interest in meditation?!

In an independent systematic review of BP and different meditative and
body-based interventions, Transcendental Meditation was the worst
intervention for lowering BP. Since TM mantras are imbalanced they tend to
increase pitta and vata, thus they will tend to increase BP (from an
 Ayurvedic perspective):

The only intervention that was worse has health education. Progressive
Muscle Relaxation (PMR) was about the same as Transcendental Meditation.

The best interventions are hatha yoga and Tai Chi.

 1. Tai Chi

 2. Yoga + biofeedback

 3. Qi gong

 4. Mindfulness based cognitive therapy

 5. Biofeedback

 6. Yoga

Current science supports the use of CoQ-10, Fish Oil and Vitamin D for
lowering BP without the use of meds.

This might be just an urban legend, but I've heard it claimed,
that B.B.King asking Hendrix, Where do all those sounds come
he from?, the latter replied: I don't know! :D

Musicians can get into the flow just like athletes.

Back in the day I saw How the West Was Won and 2001 Space Odyssey in
Cinerama. That was at the Cinerama theater in Seattle.

[FairfieldLife] Bye Bye MSNBC!

2012-07-15 Thread Bhairitu
It's now NBCNews.com. Microsoft now has nothing to do with the site (or
probably the channel too). I wonder if it will change to
XfinityNews.com since Comcast now owns NBC (just in case anyone here was
wondering why their Comcast bill is going up).

That is such an awesome theatre and beautiful restored. I saw revivals of
those same 2 films also in Seattle at the Cinerama. I am hoping to make the LA
shows in Sept. and Oct. I grew up in San Francisco so my first exposures to
those titles were at the Cinerama theatres there.

The Holy Trinity of Cinerama was Able, Baker and Charlie.

Well then, my second guess would be Judas. He was in charge of the money.
John said Judas used to pilfer from the groups treasury. Didn't he
charge people to here the sermon on the mount?

Yes, that was my intuition and also from hearing other readings about this
subject...
I think that Judas was a much deeper character, than the story gives him credit
for...
He was a very practical, down to earh, kind of man, and he wanted Jesus to
overthrow Rome, as did many Jews of that time, who were follwers of Jesus
then...
Jesus knew he was a 'wanted man' after he f'd with the money changers in the
Temple...also, after the rumors of his raising Lazaras from the Dead, was very
disturbing to the Roman and Jewish power structure..
So, Jesus asked Judas to do what he did, because Jesus wanted to 'get it over
with'...
Judas expected Jesus to 'get everyone out of the Roman occupation of
Israel...so, when Jesus was tortured and killed, that really was a shock to all
who were there...
The earth itself trembled, and the rains came with lightning and thunder

Because Judas was regarded as a traitor in history, Maharishi had no problem in
relating and attracting other souls who had similar predicaments, karmically...

Many of the Nazi leadership, for example, had wanted some kind of 'Ideal
Society'...and so much of Maharishi's teaching works well for the Germans, as I
was related in previous posts...

So, that is just one of M's lifetimes..

I also believe he was the sage, Socrates in Ancient Greek times, and many
people who feel so enamored with him, in this lifetime, remember him
subconsciously, from then, and so felt a heart bond with him...
