Lochte also gave a hundred dollars on top of the fifty for the repairs. I would
assume as hush money and to sweep it all under the rug(bribe).He told his mom
that he had been *robbed*, whether he meant it figuratively or literally or at
least embellished what had happened. She goes to NBC, they've got a *story*.
NBC backs Lochte into a corner. Lochte keeps lying to cover the original lie he
told his mother. NBC runs with the lies, Brazilian police feel insulted by the
national negative attention placed on them and want to get even.
Lochte is a liar and his mother a blabber mouth seeking media attention

The swimmers gave the money to the manager of the gas station, not the
security guards.
The security guards had called the police and were holding the swimmers until
they arrived, but the swimmers managed to leave before the police got there. If
they thought they were being extorted (for all of about $50), why didn't they
wait for the police?
The press "got involved" because Lochte went to NBC and told them his robbery
story. Then he told the police one story, but changed it later. That's when the
police became suspicious and started investigating. It isn't the press's fault
that Lochte kept telling different stories.
