The translation of Mein Kampf into Arabic as jihad is what's called a
cultural translation. As with anything else, there are fashions in the
history of translation studies, and cultural translation is one of these. I
think we could probably even make an educated guess on when that translation
was produced, based on when the practice of cultural translation had its
heyday. I recently posted my translation of a classical Chinese poem into
blues lyrics--when I presented that translation at the International Writing
Program at the University of Iowa back in the seventies, it caused quite a stir
because that was early on in that trend in translation studies. I did it
consciously as a test to see what the reaction would be. The pendulum has
swung the other way, now, and when I went to a celebration of the 30 year
anniversary of the Department of Translation Studies (which I created), I
realized that these days The Blue Crane Blues would have
got me kicked out.
So whether or not we'd call translating Kampf into jihad appropriate or not
is a complex cultural question.
