Most Americans are sick of this war. We've
already won. And, the Afghans now have their
own government. Why stay there any longer?

To keep an eye on the Taliban living in Pakistan?

We might have to step in to defend India in case
of a nuclear attack from Pakistan. It's cheaper
and makes more sense to stay there instead of
having to go back in two years from now when the
al Qaeda has the Pak nukes.

Using your logic, the U.S. should withdraw all
it's troops from Europe and Japan because we won
WW II. You're not making any sense.

This is just another example that shows the US should
   get out of there ASAP.

So, you're thinking that Obama could win the next
election by walking our troops out of Afghanistan?

Not sure if Obama can afford a big military loss after
investing ten years to win. This is 'Obama's War',
remember? Do we really want Obama to lose the war he
  fully supported?

about opposing George W. Bush. - Glenn Reynolds

It was apparent in 2008 that the American people wanted to end the war in Iraq
and Afghanistan. That's the main reason why Obama won that election. I don't
believe the American have changed their mind at this time.

We are no longer responsible for the Taliban. The new Afghanistan government
is now in charge of their own people's affairs.

In addition, the US cannot afford to maintain a military presence in
Afghanistan. As of now, our national debt is about 13 trillion dollars and
increasing due to interest costs.

President Johnson had a similar rationale for keeping the troops in Vietnam.
He thought that the rest of southeast Asia would turn communist if the Viet
Cong won. Well guess what? None of that happened.

As such, the US should not make any assumptions of what may happen between
Pakistan and India. IMO, India is capable of taking care of its own defense
and affairs.

IMO, it's no longer necessary to have a US military presence in Europe and
Japan. The Europeans can take care of their own defense responsibilities.
Also, Japan is financially capable of taking care of its own defense posture.

However, the US may still need to keep its troops in South Korea since the
North Koreans are still not content with the situation in their home peninsula.
