[FairfieldLife] Re: Patanjali as a Quantum Physicist
Here's another take on this subject from Yogi Shanti Desai. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sr5JLi73i0 --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, John jr_esq@... wrote: Many of his thoughts in the Yoga Sutras can be related to the ideas in quantum physics today. In sutra III.45, he stated: Thence results the manifestation of the powers, such as atomization et cetera, perfection of the body and indestructibility of its constituents. Specifically, animan pertains the miniaturization of the body. But it could also cover the siddhi to see parts of the body, such as the details of the retina in the eyes. This specific siddhi is the prime example that the universe is based on consciousness. Even the dimensions of space and time are based on consciousness. If this is so, the higher dimensions theorized in physics are not curbed and hidden within space-time. Rather, these dimensions are the various vibrations relating to the states of consciousness in the human experience. In other words, the common experiences of waking, sleeping, and dreaming are part of the higher vibrations of the space-time continuum. In effect, all of nature, even a rock, experiences a form of waking, sleeping and dreaming. Ultimately, however, only the human physiology can experience Unity Consciousness. As such, it's fascinating to contemplate that the human being is the culmination of creation in the universe.

Xeno, Most of us are asleep as to the potential of being a human being. However, there have been unusual persons, like the Buddha, Krishna, and Jesus, who became enlightened. Among Christians, we can assume that persons like Aquinas, Teresa of Avila, and others have attained Unity Consciousness based on their writings and witnesses.

Xeno I think that's part of the lila. life playing peek a boo, pretending that it doesn't know that it's whole as it is. Again I'm gonna refer to Carde's jelly bean post: 4510 jelly beans, 160 guesses which averaged out to 4515. Unity is set as a goal. But the imagined goal is not what it was imagined to be, because it was just your imagination. Now, if in fact, there is a real experience called unity, that transcends everything, how could it possibly be described, since nothing we could think of could envelope it? The universe is the cat, and we are the mouse. When the time comes, the veil is ripped away, and the con is revealed. When we are born, not only are we marked for death. We are marked as marks, as suckers. What a joy!

If so few on the planet even know about the possibility of it, much less pursue it or attain it, how important can it be? :-) Well, I guess it depends on how you value free will. LoL! Samadhi is a Buddhist term. So is karma, along with samsara and moksha, from the shramana tradition, of which Buddhism and Jainism are continuations. Patajali agrees with the Buddha and Kapila that life is characterized by suffering. Otherwise, there would be no yoga and no asceticism. In Zoroastrianism, active participation in life through good thoughts, good words and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep the chaos at bay. This active participation is a central element in Zoroaster's concept of free will and Zoroastrianism rejects all forms of asceticism and monasticism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asceticism So, we are either free or we are bound - if free then there's no reason to practice yoga; if bound, by what means can we free ourselves? According to Buddhist teaching, '' has nothing to do with a persons future rebirths. Karma is just the law of cause and effect and everything is subject to this law, from a highly evolved person down to a single blade of grass - there are no exceptions. If there were any kinds of left-over karmic actions in future births these would have to be controlled by the Ishvara, the inner controller. But Buddhism has no such controller - so karma is just Causation, the central philosophy of Buddhism. In order for a person to reap the result of his or her actions in the past, there would have to be a reincarnating soul-monad. But the historical Buddha did not ascribe to this idea. According to Shakya the Muni, the historical Buddha, a person gets the karma of their actions in this life - there is rebirth, but not a rebirth of a soul-monad. So, there would be no individual to reap the effects of past karma. Go figure.
