S3,

You've got a good point there. IMO, the problem lies in the
fundamentalist interpretation of religious belief rather than in
assimilation to a new culture. Islam has that fundamentalist quality
ingrained in its teachings, although there are other Muslims who have
a more progressive interpretation of Islam. As such, some Muslims
have a tendency to revert back to the fundamentalist outlook whenever
they are in a difficult situation, such as being a minority in a
predominantly Christian culture.

This situation is happening even in the Philippines where the Muslims
are essentially coming from the same racial background. The Muslim
insurgents over there have fought the government for years in southern
Philippines for sovereignty over certain geographical areas. This is
due basically to a fundamentalist view that their religion is
incompatible with a Christian culture.

Nonetheless, the answer to a peaceful society is respect and tolerance
of other people's religion through democratic means, and the
separation of church and state in running the government. This idea
is obviously coming from the American founding fathers who were
centuries ahead in formulating an ideal government for a new society.

This new form of government was experimental back then and still is
today. This government is difficult to implement and maintain as one
can see with the politics here in the US and the other countries which
have adopted the American system of government.

But, given the diversity of cultures in the world and the ever
increasing dependency of countries to the entire planet,
fundamentalism is not the answer to global peace. We can see this
fact play out in the Middle East where even Muslims are fighting each
other for the right to practice their own brand of Islam.

The democratic form of government is the logical answer to world
governance. But it's easier said than done. For brevity, one can say
democracy requires its people to have a higher level of consciousness
to function properly.

The real significance is that the American journalist was beheaded by

The day may come when US Navy Seals have to drop in to sort things . . .
