I'm not sure you could say the Klan was an *arm* of the Democrats, although
they supported the Democrats and the Democratic elected officials protected
them and looked the other way when they did anything. Democrats did need Klan
endorsements to run for any electable position at one time.It wasn't strictly a
Southern organization either. Started out as Southern vigilante group to drive
out carpet baggers (northern Republicans) trying to influence Southern
politics. But in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century it
spread nation wide and wielded a lot of political influence, locally, state and
federal, especially through the Democratic party even into the mid to late
sixties.

Fact: The Ku Klux Klan was originally and primarily an arm of the Southern
Democratic Party. Its mission was to terrorize freed slaves and "ni**er-loving"
(their words) Republicans who sympathized with them.
