Donovan to Perform in Fairfield During Fairfest

1960’s music legend Donovan will be performing in Fairfield in September during
his “Sunshine Superman Fiftieth Anniversary North American Tour.” The tour
celebrates the 50th anniversary of the singer’s hit single “Sunshine Superman”
reaching #1 on the Billboard charts.

Donovan is regarded as one of the most influential songwriters and recording
artists working today. Audiences during the tour will be treated to Donovan’s
history of hits, including “Sunshine Superman,” “Mellow Yellow,” and “Hurdy
Gurdy Man.”

The 50th Anniversary tour will honor an artist whose fingerprints can be seen
throughout the last half-century of popular music. “I am delighted to be going
on tour throughout North America, to thank all who have followed my work from
the beginning — and all who have just discovered me now,” said Donovan.

Donovan learned the Transcendental Meditation® technique from Maharishi Mahesh
Yogi in Los Angeles, and then in 1968 he journeyed to Rishikesh, India, along
with the members of the Beatles, for advanced studies in consciousness. He has
been an enthusiastic supporter of the David Lynch Foundation and he accompanied
Mr. Lynch on several international tours to bring the Transcendental Meditation
technique to thousands of schoolchildren.

A percentage of the proceeds from the tour will support the “Donovan Children’s
Fund” — a division of the David Lynch Foundation — which will help bring
Transcendental Meditation to tens of thousands of at-risk students in
underserved schools throughout the United States.

Donovan was invited to perform in Fairfield by Bill Goldstein, MUM Dean of
Global Development and General Counsel, and the Fairfield concert is a benefit
event for MUM’s Global Scholarship Fund, providing scholarships to MUM for
international students who graduated from schools where the David Lynch
Foundation introduced the Quiet Time program.

“Donovan has very generously donated his time to participate in the fundraiser,
and he has been a longtime generous friend of the University,” said Steve
Langerud, Deputy Director of Global Development at MUM. “We are so grateful for
his time, energy, and support for what we are doing for these students.”

“We are honored that Donovan is visiting Fairfield for the fifth time,” said
event producer Michael Sternfeld. “We are delighted to have him back because
everyone in the community adores him. He is one of many notable figures and
celebrities coming here to speak and perform in support of the growth of MUM.”

Donovan will perform two concerts on Sunday night, September 4th, during
Fairfest — Fairfield’s premiere 3-day annual music festival
.
The first concert, at 8 PM, is a full solo acoustic concert indoors in the
Sondheim Theater, featuring all of Donovan’s greatest hits. Then Donovan will
perform a shorter encore set outdoors on the Fairfest Main Stage at 9:30 PM,
backed by the nationally-known Celtic folk band, Bonnie Paine & Friends.

[FairfieldLife] Donovan aims to put students on higher plane

Donovan aims to put students on higher plane
by Thair Shaikh

The Guardian
  1 November 2007

On 1 November 2007 The Guardian reported:
Scottish folk singer Donovan and film director David Lynch have joined
together to create the Invincible Donovan University where students can learn
Transcendental Meditation along with traditional university subjects. It is a
joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the
success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of education.

Donovan and Lynch, who were joined by quantum physicist John Hagelin and Dr
Bevan Morris, President of Maharishi University of Management located in the
United States, are on a British tour promoting Transcendental Meditation as a
way to reduce stress, crime, and violence in colleges and schools.

Lynch, a 34-year practitioner of TM, has set up a foundation for children to
learn Transcendental Meditation.

The Guardian reported, 'He said through his foundation he had found children
undertaking meditation achieve better qualifications at school, boost their
creativity, particularly in relation to the arts, and are more productive.'

Donovan explained that his university would offer the usual subjects with the
addition of Transcendental Meditation, and that he would be involved in
teaching and administrative aspects of the project.

He was quoted as saying, 'It will be a normal university but will also be very,
very different because of its potential that will be unfolding because of an
extraordinary technique which I learnt when I was in India It's called
transcendental meditation and it has been applied for many years in different
educational programmes with astounding results.'

Donovan has met with Scottish culture minister Linda Fabiani to discuss the
project.

The Guardian quoted Donovan as saying, ' ... the world is ready for this now,
it is clear this is the time'.

'Invincible Donovan University' is in the works

Sixties pop star Donovan is working on a plan to open a university in
Scotland which will concentrate on transcendental meditation.

The 'Mellow Yellow' singer says guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi told him to
build the university on a visit to India in 1968, and it wasn't until
he met famed film director David Lynch in recent years that he decided
to fulfill the Maharishi's request.

I know it sounds like an airy-fairy hippie dream to go on about '60s
peace and love, Donovan told the Associated Press But the world is
ready for this now.

I met David Lynch, who told me about the positive effects of TM in
education. Although it's taken me 35 years, I will do what the
Maharishi told me to do.

[FairfieldLife] Donovan Plans Meditation University

Donovan Plans Meditation University

By BEN McCONVILLE – 6 hours ago
--- from The Associated Press

  EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) —
Donovan, famous for '60s pop hits such
as Hurdy Gurdy Man and Mellow Yellow,
has announced plans to open the
Invincible Donovan University, where
students will adhere to the principles
of transcendental meditation.
I know it sounds like an airy-fairy
hippie dream to go on about '60s peace
and love, said the 61-year-old singer,
who was born Donovan Leitch in the Maryhill
area of Glasgow. But the world is ready
for this now, it is clear this is the time.
He said the university will be located in
either Glasgow or Edinburgh.
  Donovan discovered transcendental meditation
while visiting India and guru
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1968.
The Maharishi told me during that 1968
visit that I should build a university
in Edinburgh. I went to my room and drew
a beautiful dome-shaped place of learning,
he said Friday.
I didn't know what to do because I
couldn't do this on my own. But then I met
David Lynch, who told me about the
positive effects of TM in education.
Although it's taken me 35 years, I will
do what the Maharishi told me to do.
  Donovan and Lynch, Oscar-nominated director
of Blue Velvet, Mullholland Dr. and
The Elephant Man, are part of a tour to
promote transcendental meditation as a means
of reducing violence, crime and stress
in schools and colleges.
The David Lynch Foundation has introduced
TM to schools in the U.S., where the
61-year-old filmmaker claims it has
transformed results and behavior.
We have gone into some of the most
deprived areas and turned around kids
with violent emotional and behavioral problems,
he said.
The duo said they will now contact
Scottish authorities to have the
institution accredited.
For a country the size of Scotland it
would take only 250 students meditating to
protect Scotland from its enemies and to
bring peace, to stop violence and drug abuse,
Lynch said. That is just a byproduct of the
students meditating together.

There is an ocean of vast proportion
And she flows within ourselves.
To take dips daily we dive in gaily,
He knows who goes within himself.
The abode of Angels, the mystical Promised Land,
The one and only Heaven, the God of man
Is but the closing of an eyelid away.

There is a silence of pure excellence
And she flows within ourselves.
To appreciate, re-deactivate,
He knows who goes within himself.
There is a reason for every season
Of change within ourselves.
To navigate, re-appreciate
And know the flow within ourselves.
The deliverance from Deluge, the good dry land,
The one and only Haven, the rock of Man
Is but the closing of an eyelid away.

There is a season, ooh,
There is an ocean, ooh,
There is a silence, ooh

[FairfieldLife] Donovan time line....Hmmmm

2006-03-28 Thread shempmcgurk
So I visited the link to Donovan's website that Vaj was kind enough to
post here and I am a bit confused.

Under the The '70s link under the lifeline link, Donovan says that
he married his muse, Linda Lawrence, in October 1970. When you scroll
down to 1980 where he mentions that he hooks up with his American
family and his daughter Ione Skye (great actress, by the way), it
doesn't gell with the timeline because when you visit Ione's page on
the Internet Movie Database at http://imdb.com/name/nm0001746/ you see
her birthdate as September 4, 1971. So either Ione is, as many
actresses do, fudging her birthdate to make herself look younger or
Donovan's love for his muse took a wee bit of a break.

[FairfieldLife] Donovan, Timothy Leary, Phil Ochs

2006-03-15 Thread SoulQuest7
I just finished reading Donovan's new autobiography, and now am starting
Timothy Leary's Design for Dying, a book he wrote as he was readying himself
for
the great adventure of dying.
Leary makes an interesting observation about the 60s quest: In the 1960s,
we promiscuously started raising questions about cosmic consciousness and
alternative realities and declaring God lost and found: in a pill, a grain of
sand, love, an Eric Clapton guitar solo. It wasn't just our naivete that
infuriated the 'grown ups.' The big philosophic questions had been long
repressed and
here we were getting all silly about them. To the conservatives, the
questions had been filed away as answered by murky, watered-down, mainstream
religious dogma. Understand, the currently powerful reactionary religious
passions
that we would stir up with our cultural shock tactics had yet to be unleashed.
For the 1960s middle-class professional, it was more a case of having a
satisfactory schoolbook answer available for that rare instance when the
question of
God and meaning would happen to come up. And to the Left, such questions were
a distraction from issues of material suffering, power dynamic, and
inequality.
(Timothy Leary, Design for Dying, page 14-15)

In Donovan's book, I found this fascinating story about his meeting with
political folk singer Phil Ochs. The setting is 1969 at the height of Donovan's
popularity after the release of his Greatest Hits album. He is in California at
the end of a tour and one of the Smothers Brothers is throwing a party for
him: Before I returned home, Tom Smothers threw a party for me at Robert
Redford's house. The guest list was as long as the press party with more
faces.
Tom took great delight in playing the 'Barabajagal' single at full volume on
the
huge sound system, asking his guests who they thought the singer was.
Everyone got it wrong. At the height of the excitement the crowds parted for a
wild-looking chick with blazing eyes. She stuck her face close to mine. It was
Janis Joplin. 'Just wanted to see what you looked like, Donovan!' And she was
gone. Janis had gone back to the bedroom where all the musos were hiding from
the
'Hollyweird' crowd. At the poolside there was a raffle and the protest
singer Phil Ochs won it. Everyone cheered as he went up to the microphone, but
he
was not pleased. He gave us all a tongue-lashing about Vietnam and the
senselessness of Hollywood, this party, me included. Raising the huge basket
of
fruit he had won, he tossed it into the pool and left in disgust. Of course,
he
was right, but the party went on regardless. I climbed the rock waterfall high
above the party (feeling a little like I also had been thrown away) and
plunged into the pool to join the fruit. (Donovan, The Autobiography of
Donovan,
page 291-292).

Not really any comments, except that both portray that tension between the
artistic person's spiritual heartfelt and the politically aware motivations.
The Donovan book I can readily recommend because I just finished it-- it would
even make a great movie or documentary. The Leary book I'm just starting,
and it's very thought provoking (Leary on his own death, interesting? DUH!)

[FairfieldLife] Donovan MMY; Tom Cruise's Thetan boogers

2005-04-10 Thread Bob Brigante

http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/journalgazette/living/11360505.htm

In 1962, Donovan Leitch of Hatfield, England, heard The
Beatles' Love Me Do on the radio and decided he wanted to be a
singer-songwriter.

Six years later, he was intimate enough with the Beatles to accompany
them to India on their sojourns to visit Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's
Ashram.

A modern equivalent of this would be if an unknown actor saw
a Mission Impossible sequel and, six years later, accompanied Tom
Cruise on a visit to his Scientology Case Supervisor so the toothy
megastar could find out how many freeze-dried thetans, or free-
floating souls left here in volcanoes by the evil emperor Xenu, had
attached themselves to his nose hair.

Yes, that's what scientologists really believe.

Anyway, as groovy and psychedelic as Donovan was during his heyday,
he was never as daffy as all that. (more at link)
