I think this response of MMY's is nonsense. I don't
know why he's saying it. I remember hearing it many
years ago and within the context of the waking state
model of development, it makes sense. But once
consciousness awakens to itself to any degree, this
assumption that we make (ahhh...think I just found the
answer) is wrong. We need to hear MMY's exact
words. This is probably guru speak stuff that means
something other than what most people hear.

He's probably talking about sadyo-mukti -- instant liberation -- which 
is extraordinarily rare, as opposed to krama-mukti, gradual 
enlightenment where elements are slowly assimilated into Self over 
time. One of the reasons sadyo-mukti is deemed so rare is that most 
individuals would not be capable of handling it.

A sudden drop into the absolute is extremely
difficult for the mind. There are long standing mental
habits that create suffering. We don't know how
attached we are until we disappear and the mind is
still working with nobody home. Very uncomfortable, as
Susan clearly articulated in her excellent book.
