Nice. Providing the space for 10 commuters/shoppers to park their vehicles, vs.

Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: I park my Big Babboe here

2015-01-06 Thread TurquoiseBee turquoi...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
Big Babboe has lived outside for the couple of years we've owned it, quite
safely. As with most bikes in the Netherlands, there is a built-in lock for the
back wheel that keeps anyone from rolling it away. In addition, we chain-lock
it to a metal post there at the canalside and if we have to leave it somewhere
for long periods of time (for example, if we drive it to the train station
before going into Amsterdam). The rest of our bikes, because there is no room
for them inside in our current house (as opposed to the old one) live outside
in the front yard, some chained to the metal fence, some not. Nothing has gone
missing so far.

To be honest, our street is safer than most because it is closed off on one
end, becoming effectively a one-way dead end. That prevents anyone from coming
by with a truck and just lifting up back-wheel-locked bikes and throwing them
in the back and stealing them. Some of our neighbors claim to have suffered the
loss of bicycles or other items to thieves, but we have seen no evidence of it.
This despite being literally across the canal from a large university, where
one might expect bicycle thefts to be higher than in some areas.

All of this said, Leiden is considered a remarkably nice and safe place to
live, even for the Netherlands. But an unsafe town in the Netherlands
probably maps to the most elite gated suburbs in the U.S. in terms of crime
rate. One of the things Americans have to give up to live here is their
expectation that life is dangerous and that living in perpetual fear is normal.
Here's a better view of the Babboe in the background, with Roland and Maya in
the foreground.

Nice! Of course, as an American living in the US, my first thought was,
Won't it get stolen? 'Cuz, there's no way that thing would survive overnight
on the streets of any American city. Hell, I wouldn't trust it overnight on the
streets of Fairfield.

Outstanding photos all!

My violinist friend has a commercial bakers bike that he bought in Amsterdam.
He could load it up with all his gig stuff. I love the idea of commercial bikes
like that, heavy duty.

They're really neat, Curtis. Ours is the Babboe type, which is a three-wheeler
model, but you also see elongated two-wheeler 'bakfiets' that can carry 2-3
kids and a bag of groceries. I (age 69 now) used our Babboe to carry 300+
pounds of junk to the recycling plant before our latest move, and without
breaking much of a sweat.

One of my favorite street performers uses a kind of baby carrier/trailer
attached to his bike to get his stuff to locations he plays at in Amsterdam. He
puts his guitars, his amps and speakers and everything into the baby carrier,
pedals across Amsterdam to his gigs, and then stands there on the street for a
couple of hours playing like this. This plus teaching his style of guitar to
students a few hours a month pays for his life. This is the street musician who
most convinced me to move here and live here. He just had such a fine life that
it inspired me to find an equally fine one for myself.

That was such an inspiring video, thanks for posting it. For a guy to make a
living as an electric lead guitarist is such an achievement. It is all his own
creativity and balls to get out there and let people pay him for what he loves
to play. The video is so simple but has great sound quality by taping directly
inline. I need to make some of these myself this Summer. Nice that they have
his heavy duty bike in the shot too!

He just had such a fine life that
it inspired me to find an equally fine one for myself.

for them inside in our current house (as opposed to the old one) live outside
in the front yard, some chained to the metal fence, some not. Nothing has gone
missing so far.

 Outstanding photos all!

My violinist friend has a commercial bakers bike that he bought in Amsterdam.
He could load it up with all his gig stuff. I love the idea of commercial bikes
like that, heavy duty.

I am a fan of the song. What a badass this guy is. Such a light touch.
