Re: Wallpaper
Hello all. Between lines: 2009/5/7 Máirín Duffy mai...@linuxgrrl.com: - Original Message From: Rodrigo Padula de Oliveira rodrigopad...@projetofedora.org Not complicated, but with a logo or symbol about the name/release. We haven't had a logo in the wallpaper since F8. The wallpaper uses the same base artwork/theme as the more knock-you-over-the-head artwork so it matches fine. I think a blue screen with some effects isn't the best wallpaper for Fedora 11. Fedora 10 had a sun Fedora 9 waves Fedora 8 transition effect during the day This was an extremely abstract rendering. F8 and F9 both had transition effects. Just because things were done one way in the past doesn't mean that way was the best way or the way to go now. As has been discussed on this list extensively over the past couple of years, we're looking to tone down the artwork a lot more and make it a bit more elegant and not knock-you-over-the-head-with-something-thematic-in-every-single-available-space-used-for-artwork. I think that we were fine with the F6, F7 and F8 wallpapers; and the change was a little bit too hard. I said this before and is my personal opinion. I send some test in the past but I was really working with other issues. Besides my English isn't so good, and sometimes I just don't want to give an answer for not make a mistake. My sugestion isn't to voting on every bug and issue that comes up, but voting on artwork options for every Fedora Release to take a direction (not a final decision), to have feedback from the people that spread and use Fedora around the world. I'm sorry, I must have misunderstood. I thought you were talking about the decision to not have the lion on the left screen wallpaper by default. The decision to go with the lion wallpaper was made very much as a group discussion, discussed and agonized over thoroughly on-list and over IRC. The last time we did a vote was a disaster. We were getting multiple art team FAS group requests daily from people who wanted to vote. Too bad we don't normally get that many requests from people who actually want to help produce artwork. There are a lot of solutions for this. For example, take the voting in 2 sections: 60% of the current art team 40% of a free vote Is really important to get the users opinions. They will use fedora and the artwork (for me) is one of the most important issues. The users (noobs or pro) will see the wallpaper everyday, this is really important. I'm talking constantly with Maria Leandro, Jayme and more recently Samuele and nobody knew about the changes and decisions taked about the wallpaper/Lion. Ultimately, as the team lead of the art team, I am responsible for when these decisions have to be made. I am the person who has to stay up all night and work to make deadlines, giving up my free time up to get things done when it isn't getting done. This is a role I truly do not enjoy, as it seems that the artwork is ALWAYS controversial, release after release. There is no way to satisfy everyone with the artwork. When one person is happy, there are 5 others who are upset about it. Change things to make those 5 people happy, then there are 20 more who are unhappy. We all do that Mairin. In different ways we all give something from our lives to the project. Is true that you take the mayor responsibility and always there is a group of persons who never get satisfied, but there are ways to know if the artwork (in this case) goes on the right line. Like I said, polls, interviews, comments, free suggestions need to be done frequently. Samuele went on vacation for a long time. Unfortunately, the deadlines for this team do not get to go on vacation. We were getting many complaints about the lion being in the wallpaper by default, and a decision had to be made. If I had held a vote, Samuele wouldn't have been there to vote. It is unfortunate that the artwork we went with was submitted so late (well past the deadline). The quality of the artwork is what drove us to make an exception to the deadline, but this obviously left us very shorthanded on time to deal with issues that cropped up such as the incessant complaints about the lion being too busy. Perhaps if the artwork had been submitted according to the schedule, we would have had more time to deliberate on how to handle the user complaints. Please read the archives. Please. I just had to take time out of my incredibly busy day to dig these links out for you. I would greatly appreciate if you would honor that by reading these threads before continuing this discussion. Re: Art team feature
Aloha sorry the late reply Hello to you, I'm María Gracia Leandro but all the members know me as tatica. I'm a fedora ambassador from Venezuela and part of my work is to convert cute things into functional things. I'm working right now in several projects in Venezuela, LatinAmerica and some International Stuff, you can read a resume here [0]... now the questionnaire. Questionnaire. Tell us about Fedora. Fedora for me is a great collaborative network who support a learning and development group of interested people and a huge platform to take a chance of software freedom. We are an example of professionalism and friendship because we have a clearly and organized group of work (developers, artist, press, sponsors and lot more) but we are also a family. It's usual to se an IRC channel talking about the new wallpaper and also see some guys talking about their weekends. We offer an awesome Software but also a great mentored and helpful group. We are fedora Give us some history on each art team member. Anyone have formal training? Who or what influenced you to get involved? This is crazy... I got involved into the free software art looking videos on youtube of privative tools I lean all by myself, reading guides, looking videos, downloading artwork and asking a lot. Fedora came to me when I most need it. I'm not a pro user, but I love to desing... so fedora is a really stable an always first with software issues. I always have the newest and the stable on my fedora desktop (and now laptop :D ) What other Linux distros have you done work for? Any independent Linux groups you've contributed artwork to? Always... I use fedora because I love it, and I spead the fedora word but I don't get too much pression on my new users to be a fedora one. I always tell to them that they should use GN/Linux or *nix based because is good for them. They will be able to learn, share and use things that possibly they were afraid or they think that those are tool for professionals. I help with a lot of communities... some are: Venezuela: Fedora-Venezuela, Ubuntu-Venezuela, Gentoo-Venezuela, UNEFA-Lug, Bolivar-LUG, nelug, velug, and the main organization of Venezuela FLISoL (LatinAmerican Festival of feee software instalation [1] ) International: Gimp-Spanish, Inkscape-Spanish, Blender-Spanish, Also I'm on the translation team for synfig and support some cliparts for several applications. I ussualy help with some conferences like: Flisol, CNSL (National Congress of Free Software), SLUD (Universidad Distrital Linux Week) and more... And lot of more things :D Can you take us through the process from development to finalization of artwork for a new release of Fedora? Does the general community contribute also? Yes. I have never been involved directly on the release artwork, but I do help with some issues. A final artwork is not just a cute wallpaper and some icons and windows... You need banners (in a lot of languages), need news, posters, spins covers and lot of stuff. We all give something to the project... and that's the idea of being a community What are your favorite Linux graphics software programs? jooo... this is a hard one. Should be Gimp, Inkscape and Blender but I also like MakeHuman, SweetHome and synfig... It depends of the use. Any thoughts on ease of use or what you'd like to see changed in Linux graphics software? This is not a dream... it's happening. Al the changes I'd like to see are getting in progress because I'm not just a user. in fact, I'm not a really designer, I'm a programmer... so if I want to see something better on X application I program or ask the community to do it. They are also a community like the fedora one, and they take suggestions and advices... so the thing is not thing on changes... is made them. As operating systems evolve so does their artwork. What direction or development would you like to see with your work pertaining to the future of Fedora? Is the same question. We are working on have something that our users love. We have a lot of new ideas in progress and if anyone wants to say something to the artwork team is invited to colaborate... In any language! :D There are a lot of new distros popping up, seemingly every day. Any advice you can give them on the graphics art side of it? Always think in the simplicity and joy... Almost all users want a cool and easy distro, and that what they should have. If someone wanted to get involved with Fedora artwork, where would they go? To the fedora project main site we have a great website and a lot of local communities to help and mentor anyone who wants to get involved... [2] Anything else you'd like to add? We are free to choose distros... we are free to ask changes... we are free to collaborate with code and art... we are in a new free world and fedora have the tools to make it happen... so, what are you waiting for? You want to make sure you are using the logo according to the usage guidelines [1] which prohibit this kind of treatment. I saw that coming... - Instead of using a specialized font for the EDU, I would maybe just write out Education in MgOpen Modata. It would fit in nicely with our secondary branding scheme then. I love the bright colors and I also like how the focus of the graphics is on the lower right, although maybe this graphic is too busy for a wallpaper. I think it would be really nice for splashes and other branding materials though, and maybe you could pull out the pencils/sun and just have a slightly desaturated version of the sky+clouds for the wallpaper? And pay more attention to the light source and direction. Your primary light source is the sun, so it think: - pencil shadows on the ground should be directed to the down-left; - the pencil shadows on the other pencils should go the opposite way; - the light rays should originate from the sun, not from the ground. -- nicu :: http://nicubunu.ro :: http://nicubunu.blogspot.com Cool Fedora wallpapers: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro/wallpapers/ Open Clip Art Library: http://www.openclipart.org my Fedora stuff: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro ___ Fedora-art-list mailing list Fedora-art-list@redhat.com http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-art-list -- tatica Maria Gracia Leandro http://www.tatica.org http://www.iseit.net http://www.latinux.org http://www.latinux.com http://www.fedora-ve.org http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/MariaLeandro LinuxUser= 440285 GPG Public Key: E1CDCC56 Be yourself... The graphic attached to that ticket meets our guidelines otherwise, and is in the spirit of use that we're trying to promote. Our base requirements is that the theme must have all required artwork needed for round 3. We have not yet had a case where more than one theme met this basic requirement. In case we do have multiple themes that meet this requirement, we need a fair method to choose which theme is selected as the default. Some ideas: - I believe Nicu suggested at one point that the number of people involved in creating the theme should be a selection factor, as the art team is a community effort. - I think perhaps setting up a vote could also be useful. The vote could be restricted to currently-active art team contributors and/or it could be opened to the whole set of Fedora accounts. - We could let FESCO decide. My suggestion is that we have a vote within the set of active Fedora art team contributors. The problem is how do we determine who is allowed in this vote - who is active? We could do: - anyone who contributed a theme idea or artwork throughout the 3 round process - anyone who has contributed a design to the art team (via the design queue, echo theme, or art theme process) in the past 6 months (the fedora 9 release period) - anyone who is in the art group in the account system (i don't think we have cleaned this out yet though and there are a few inactive accounts still I think) What do you all think? ~m ___ Fedora-art-list mailing list Fedora-art-list@redhat.com http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-art-list -- Samuele Storari Art Director Byte-Code srl mobile: +39 347 50 798 32 office: +39 02 9840047 http://www.byte-code.com ___ Fedora-art-list mailing list Fedora-art-list@redhat.com http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-art-list -- tatica Maria Gracia Leandro http://www.tatica.org http://www.iseit.net http://www.latinux.org http://www.latinux.com http://www.fedora-ve.org http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/MariaLeandro LinuxUser= 440285 GPG Public Key: E1CDCC56 Be yourself... Do you want to continue that for Fedora 10? As a user I would love to see us break free of the blue prison, it looks dated and should be put down with all manners of mercy possible. I think it hurts us to stick with the blue theme and unlike other competing distros not work towards a unified look over several cycles. There's a lot of conversation going on in the art list lately, and most of us is focusing on the F9 artwork, so it's natural that you've got not much of a feedback. Besides, it DOES matter what YOU'd like to do. It's not that we don't care, but sometimes it isn't easy to come up with specific critics (especially if it's only mockups). I'll make sure I won't forget this thread and reply to you in this matter fully when I think it through more deeply, but right now I am focusing on getting the nodoka gtk engine 0.7.0 release done in time, so please be a little more patient. The best I could suggest you though right now is this: make a wiki page dedicated to the Notify design, and make a single thread clearly stating that it's only about the notification-daemon design. You'll need to gather some info, how can we do that (meaning the real theme) and even if you would be not able to do it yourself, it would help us to put all the info on the wiki. As for the design itself: when the real code is being done, there is still a plenty of room for improvement based on the usage experience, so do not feel obliged to come up with an awesome design from the start. And once again, I plan to make some sketches, based on your design, as well and will comment on the notify design when I am done with them :) Thanks, Martin PS: And remember that most of us, like you, are doing these things in our spare time, so if there isn't enough of that, we do not reply much to the stuff, or to everything, what goes on here, so do not feel disappointed by the lack of as much critics as you might like ;-) ___ Fedora-art-list mailing list Fedora-art-list@redhat.com http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-art-list -- tatica Maria Gracia Leandro http://www.tatica.org http://www.iseit.net http://www.latinux.org http://www.fedora-ve.org http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/MariaLeandro LinuxUser= 440285 GPG Public Key: E1CDCC56 Be yourself... Really, I like to play games, other people around do the same, but this is not the right place for the topic. recoding the entire OS to get it to be compatible with games, like windows? yea i know lots of you have your reason to hate windows, but they've been doing a pretty good job since day 1 with making it compatible with every last little tiny bit of rampant hardware out there, and more, 1 or 2 problems isnt really worth dissing it out now is it? anyway. I do not understand exactly your point, but I think you have it wrong. - compatible with games like run the latest Windows games? We can't help much if the game developers choose to target Windows (and use things like DirectX instead of OpenGL). Emulation (Wine) is the best hope; - as in have good 3D hardware support? there is a lot of work on this, but is not easy: the hardware manufactures provide drivers for Windows and in many cases not even documentation for Linux developers to make their own. Due to license, is not possible (and outside of our goals anyway) for Fedora to ship binary (proprietary) drivers; - as in have quality games out-of-the-box? The Games SIG do its best about this. Aside from the gamers aspect, what about a new GUI? dunno about you lot but i gotta say im getting REALLY sick of menu bars and windows. how bout a 3D interface? selectable themes of course, and maybe even some innovation taken from some outside sources? like for example, anime? ever seen serial experiments LAIN? no? oh well. 3D would BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF windows Keep in mind Fedora is a general purpose operating system and a general purpose desktop so it should work equally well in both games but general desktop (browsing the web, reading email, doing office stuff, etc.) Creating such a new interface is a kind of Holy Grail and whoever can invent it may consider himself hitting the jackpot. If I can help you... will be glad :D Greetings from Venezuela! 2007/10/27, Michael Beckwith [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Through my interaction with the wiki and just trying to find information in general, I've come to realize that the wiki is extremely messy and hard to navigate. I would like to propose a revamp of sorts for it. This would involve mapping out what we currently have, reorganizing and re-mapping, and then implementing the new navigation. At this current point, I am already working on mapping out what is there currently, and I'll keep working on it and post what I find at a later date. What I'd like from the rest of you, is finding out who is interested in helping to reorganize. I'd like to do as much of this discussion in our IRC room, but the mailing list would work as well. What would be discussed is determining what major sections we should have, what 2nd level navigation should be, and so on. After that, someone or a few people can start implementing what we come up with, hopefully resulting in an easy to navigate wiki that has clarity and ease to locate the information you need. So, who's interested in helping out? -- ~Michael http://ridleytx.structed.net (for now) http://michaelbox.net (eventually) ___ Fedora-art-list mailing list Fedora-art-list@redhat.com http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-art-list -- tatica Maria Gracia Leandro http://www.tatica.org http://www.iseit.net http://www.latinux.org http://www.fedora-ve.org http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/MariaLeandro LinuxUser= 440285 GPG Public Key: E1CDCC56 Be yourself... Re: About the mascot
I think is a delicated issue. To pic a mascot, we should think about animals in danger of extinction, but this would unduly favour some of them. So when I made my propose, I was thinking not just of one, rather, of several, but to make a unique mascot that could be more symbolic. (don't wanna say USE MINE!.. just the idea...) So, why don't we make a list of which animals are in danger of extinction and join them to make a new one? 2007/8/22, Nicu Buculei [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Karel Boissinot wrote: Anybody thought of using a butterfly for the mascott? I really suck at drawing things so I can't say I have made a sketch, but I got inspired looking at this picture: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro/wallpapers/images/3d_bubble_07.svg The reflected logo kinda makes it look like the bottom wings of a butterfly. Anyway, just food for thought The thing is a mascot should not be centered around the logo, the intention behind the mascot was to have it freely usable by anyone and the logo is governed by trademark guidelines. -- nicu :: http://nicubunu.ro :: http://nicubunu.blogspot.com Cool Fedora wallpapers: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro/wallpapers/ Open Clip Art Library: http://www.openclipart.org my Fedora stuff: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro ___ Fedora-art-list mailing list Fedora-art-list@redhat.com http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-art-list -- tatica Maria Gracia Leandro http://www.tatica.org http://www.fedora-ve.org http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/MariaLeandro LinuxUser= 440285 GPG Public Key: E1CDCC56 Be yourself... Re: a little hi!
I received this the same day I wrote my first mail :D Your signed Fedora Contributor License Agreement titled Fedora Individual Contributor License Agreement was processed successfully. You can now contribute to the Fedora Project. If you intend to work with a specific Fedora project, you may need to join additional groups in the Account System. So I think I'm done... :S I think we should work a little more on the wiki translation, cause the process to join this awesome team are no too easy, and all the translated support is not for this part. (I can help to translate the art-wiki too if you think this can help) I feel really... jejej I don't know really :$. that you know my work. Like I always say: I'm just a programmer who like things pretty :D Thanks a lot for your support, and my support team (Venezuela and ES network) has told me that I should wait for a certification or an answer of the CLA, but I receive the mail and I think I'm ready. I hope to help in all that will be need. kiss kiss :D 2007/7/30, Nicu Buculei [EMAIL PROTECTED]: María Leandro wrote: Hello all. I'm Maria Leandro and I'm glad of join your team :D. Hi, and welcome! Some of us may already be familiar (by a small degree) with your work, I remember seeing links to your creations (mostly wallpapers) on various mailing lists before, so I am glad to see you on board. I've been a while on the IRC channel talking a little about Fedora art issues and a friend there told me to join this great team to help with some graphics. Right now I made 2 characters that I would be glad to upload to the mascot wiki, but on the process to made this, I pass trough a looot of things (make the key is not easy :S). I went to #fedora-websites and told me that to be able of upload some artwork to fedora mascot, fist I'd to join and edit mi wiki... that's the problem.. I can't :S. Intellectual property and license is a delicate and important matter and the work on visual identity makes it even more delicate and important. For your contributions to be accepted on the website and maybe later in the distro it is very important that you understand and agree with the license terms and conditions, this is why in necessary for you to follow the steps. If you have troubles with any particular step of the process, please ask and we will try to help you. I've been working with artwork on Fedora Team Venezuela specially on inkscape and gimp making some translations of artwork and It would be nice to make it on the wiki :D. And I am sure we can use your skills in more other areas, so please sign the Contributor License Agreement If some one can help me to edit my wiki and upload some mascot it would be awesome! (I really don't know which step make now :-| ) While it is possible to upload content on the wiki on someone else's part, this is not recommended, it can de done only when we have the certitude the person has the intent to sign the CLA, can't do it temporarily and we are in a hurry. We are not hurry with the mascots and can wait a few days or even weeks until you solve the problems with the CLA (again, ask for specific help if you need it). -- nicu :: http://nicubunu.ro :: http://nicubunu.blogspot.com Cool Fedora wallpapers: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro/wallpapers/ Open Clip Art Library: http://www.openclipart.org my Fedora stuff: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro -- tatica Maria Gracia Leandro www.tatica.org www.fedora-ve.org LinuxUser= 440285 Be yourself...
