 Oggetto: Criteria for theme selection

 Hi,

Since our deadline to choose a theme is Sep 21 I would like to make sure
before that point the criteria for selection are clear.

Our base requirements is that the theme must have all required artwork
 needed for round 3.

We have not yet had a case where more than one theme met this basic
requirement. In case we do have multiple themes that meet this
requirement, we need a fair method to choose which theme is selected as
 the default.

 Some ideas:

 - I believe Nicu suggested at one point that the number of people
involved in creating the theme should be a selection factor, as the art
 team is a community effort.

 - I think perhaps setting up a vote could also be useful. The vote could
be restricted to currently-active art team contributors and/or it could
be opened to the whole set of Fedora accounts.

 - We could let FESCO decide.

My suggestion is that we have a vote within the set of active Fedora art
team contributors. The problem is how do we determine who is allowed in
this vote - who is active?

 We could do:

 - anyone who contributed a theme idea or artwork throughout the 3 round
 process
 - anyone who has contributed a design to the art team (via the design
queue, echo theme, or art theme process) in the past 6 months (the
 fedora 9 release period)
 - anyone who is in the art group in the account system (i don't think we
have cleaned this out yet though and there are a few inactive accounts
 still I think)

 What do you all think?

Not sure however, how much up-to-date it is...

I just noticed KDE section is outdated.
New KSplash engine in KDE4 is very flexible, with alpha blended PNG
sprite animation (i did fade-in+slide-in icons for f9) so only thing
that can't be done is alpha blending with desktop background (not even
rounded corners possible)
For KDM we (KDE SIG) would like to have userlist enabled by default,
so even having pretty nice layouting abilities for graphics, widget
layout can't be changed much.

It's actually pretty easy and you can do it even using nautilus, but I
find more convenient to use mc. Here are the steps:

  * open terminal
  * open mc in terminal
  * in one panel navigate to the folder you have the file in
  * switch to the other panel (hit tab)
  * hit F9, enter the menu, and select shell link
  * enter the machine name in format:
   your-fas-account-name.fedorapeople.org
   in my case it's mso.fedorapeople.org
  * hit OK. You'll be probably asked for a password to your ssh key -
watch the command line to see what's happening
  * once you're in, navigate into
   /home/fedora/your-fas-account-name/public_html
   in my case it's /home/fedora/mso/public_html
  * switch back to the first panel
  * select the file you want to upload (either by hitting insert, or
   highlighting it)
  * hit F5 to copy, you can leave the form as is and hit OK
  * watch the progress in the command line
  * after you're done, close mc and the terminal

I decided to remove the waves altogether. Makes the icon less cluttered

I didn't send any introduction letters, i just spent an evening
animating splash with my curly hands and sub-zero (not to be confused
with cool) gimp skillz, and second revision of it now welcomes kde4
users in sulphur, right after kdm theme, i've hacked up a bit later
with help of Martin. Contributing to fedora is easy, joining IRC to
show off some drafts or concepts and receive critics is even easier.
I'm pretty sure people who really want to contribute can do it without
loudmouth letters, bringing some artwork instead.

With best regards to people who do more and talk less.

Please keep us posted when succeeding, that would help a lot in reducing
the number of attachments uploaded to a page (no more one SVG source, one
large PNG and a thumbnail PNG, as we used to to with Moin).

Is mediawiki's SVG renderer going to be really capable with more complex

I have been using Linux for about 4-5 years now, and have been doing
computer graphic design for as long as I have been using computers, so since
the original apple II. I just enjoy doing artwork, be it wallpapers, web
banners, GDM's (just started on making those), or anything else. I just
started using Fedora again, after not using a Red Hat based system since Red
Hat 6, been using mostly Debian base OS's, but I am very pleased with F8,
 very nice, clean distro.
I would like to start work with the art team and try to get involved
in making artwork for Fedora, be it (as I stated above) wallpapers, GDMs, or
anything else that may be of use to the team, and would also like to be a
part of something that I believe is of great value, and try to give back to
the Fedora community in some way, as my programing skills leave something to
 be desired.
I will stop here and keep this short as not to take of too much of all
 of time.
So hello everybody, and I look forward to working with you all of on
 whatever projects may be ahead.
 Sincerely,
 Dave S.

 Hi Dave,

Welcome to the fedora art list!
It's great that you are willing to spend your time on improving the
 look of fedora.

Could you perhaps post some links to things you've made before?
and i'm really looking forward to the things you are making now for fedora.

 Thanx so far,
 Mark

I haven't made too much that I have put out for others, I have made some
stuff and put it on Gnome-Look.org, most of it for a distro called
LinuxMint, as that is the distro I have been using for the last year or so,
 you can see it here
 http://www.gnome-look.org/content/mycontent.php?PHPSESSID=98a828c786143b6c75224023a86ac45a
Some of it I made when I first started making things for Linux, some things
I thought just looked kind of cool, but I have never seriously worked on art
for a product, so things I make for Fedora will be much cleaner and more
 polished.
I'll try and get some stuff I made for myself posted somewhere so you
can see what I can actually do, as the stuff on Gnome-Look is sometimes
 cartoonish.
As for GTK themes, as I've said before, my coding skills are not so
great, so I have not made any GTK themes as of yet, still looking for a good
tutorial for learning that, but wallpapers, GDM's, web banners, and that
sort of thing, I can do pretty well, (I think).

Both GPL and CC-BY-SA are ok for me. Thanks for feedback and ability
to contribute =)

KSplash for KDE4, based on RHGB waves thing. RFC

2008-03-26 Thread Pavel Shevchuk
Bored with default KDE4 splash and unable to draw anything better (i'm
programmer, not an artist) i created KSplashX theme out of nice RHGB
svg found on wiki and stock Oxygen icons. How it is? How can it be
improved?

Theme tarball: http://attic.scwlab.com/Waves-ksplash.tar.bz2

P.S. Icons aren't animated yet, they just appear in order.
