Well i don't really agree on translating will be enough.
When there are very few words and strong ideas behind, you can't always
translate them as easily we would love to. Translating means adapting
as well, and sometimes we have to get rid of all the initial words to
keep the meaning, and it looks like new slogan at the end. For example,
each release has a pun on the website. For Fedora 9 it is "Make waves"
which can't be translated into french as such, as it has a negative
meaning and nothing to do with "waves", word linked to the theme of
Fedora 9. So we had to adapt it, use a new slogan keeping this idea of
waves and spreading to people : "The New Wave" (La nouvelle vague -- in
French).

I remain quite sceptical though...

Thomas

Great they were blurred then.

I found the tool on RedHat Magazine
(http://www.redhatmagazine.com/2007/02/27/the-open-palettehow-to-use-inkscapes-new-blur-filter/)

Moreover, I noticed that the reflect of the right hand side sulphur

The svg with inkscape does not have it, but when i open it with firefox
it does appear.

Help handling inkscape with fedora 9 banner

2008-02-06 Thread Thomas Canniot
Hello

I'm trying to translate the amazing little fedora 9 banner [1] into
french, but my poor knowledge of inkscape does not let me export the
file correctly.

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/PromoBanners?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=fedora9alpha-banner2_mo.png

I got the blue waves around and the outline of the 9 figure whereas
there are not present in the one Mairin introduced on her blog.

Should I simply remove them ? I f i do so, the blur aroung the sulphur
is no more present.

Thanks for your help

I am not very familiar with this list, but I did not imagine any second
that John's work would be published in the final distro. I don't really
know how to say this (I really DONT want to be offensive or criticise
his work) : his theme is great, FULL of many ideas and many ideas for
many different themes. He has a great talent, I don't have such and I am
really anvious not to be able to do the same. But his work does not look
as professional as what professional designers / artists, like Mairin
and Diana, can do.

I read on somewhere mailing list about FC6 that it was something people
do not want, as it can't please everybody.

I find this argument rather strange as even a wallpaper can't make every
people happy and we are shipping a distro with a customed wallpaper as
well.

I think however that it is a good idea to improve fedora's own
personality.

ok, here is my critique of FedoraBorealis. I'm trying to make something
different than "i like it" as MD suggested it in her mail yesterday [1].

* About the wallpaper
The impressions it conveys to me is that everything is going higher. All
the elements that compose our logo are going higher. As they all
represent freedom and community, it makes free software in general going
higher and as a consequence the use we can make of a computer is
improving thanks to foss.
Going higher is a positive direction (even if i don't believe in any
god) it seems god may be above us. Freedom could be linked as well as
something pure then.
I'm a bit sad with this "fedora" that seems stuck on earth. Maybe it
could try to reach some sky as well.

* About Metacity Theme and GTK+ Theme
I feel very strange about flatness. It seems that windows are only one
piece of everything, whereas there are different elements that compose a
nautilus windows (title bar, menu bar etc.)
About the top right hand corner buttons, the fact they do not convey
the actions they are aimed at will be very annoying for people who are
not used to a computer.

* Bootsplash Concept
It seems to be the ufo of this theme. Even if it is pure, as there are
nothing but Fedora on it, it is the same Fedora stuck to earth that all
his friends that were going higher in the wallpaper abandoned there.
Pureness must then not rhyme with emptiness. I feel that pureness is
well conveyed with no "bug" on a painting, no shortcomings (perfect
light - no shadow - bright and sharp colours for example)

Cheers, hope this helps.

So do I, but the blue color used for the grub splash seems more to be a
fc5 color. Light blue and white for fc5 and dark blue and black for fc6.

I mean that there seems to be a gap between grub image and gdm image.
The couple grub and default wallpaper is fine, but gdm dark version
seems tnot to used the same color palette.

Her is what the pdf contains. I only retained information useful for the
art-list.

The accepted digital files accepted must have been made with :
InDesign 2
Illustrator 10
Photoshop 6
Acrobat 5.0

All colours must be defined as CMJN Euroscale or Pantone colours.

Please consider white as a true colour.

Density between colours should be kept between 15% and 85% not to loose
too much details.

Texts minimal size : 4 pt
Line minimal size : 0.2 mm

Illustrator files :
* Vector objects : 800 pp by default.
* Caracteristics : see Photoshop file format indications.
* Colours must be quadri and/or direct tones (Pantone nuancier couché or
not) exclusively.
* No quadri colors with an inking rate above 280%
* Over printing of black : check the dialog box about background and /
or boarder (or about transparency box in other Illustrator versions)
* Vectorize all fonts.
* Use the "info on this file" to validate the document.
* Saving files : EPS file format
Compatibility : lat version
Preview : 8 bits
Postscript : level 2
Check box "include imported images" if there are some.

Photoshop Files :
* Images in CMJN colour or grey levels : 300dpi
* Images in bichromie with "tramés" : 300dpi
* Images in Bitmat mode or in bichromie with no "tramé" : 1200dpi
* Becareful : no 256 colours only images or in RVG will be accepted.
This exclude file formats such as : JPG, PCX, BMP, GIF, PPT, DOC
* Maximal inking rate : 280 %
* Avoid text under photoshop with a size under 24 pts. Texts are better
made with Illustrator and should be made with it.

Do not include printing surface (boarder + blank center)
Printings on CD directly in Photoshop, files having been reimported.

* Vectorised draws saved as masks : nothing to enter.
* Direct colour tones, other than CMJN, must be chosen exclusively une
the Pantone nuanciers (couché or not)

* Saving Files :
Photoshop EPS : 8 Bits, binary coding
Tiff : non compression
CMJN files, with direct tone surfaces : DCS 2.0

I hope everything is understandable, my dictionnaries are 100km far from
me. :/

After discussing on IRC with Diana, we came to conclusion for the
following deadline :

september 25th : deadline for submission
25 to 29th september : finalisation of the suggested artwork

I have to give the art team the following elements :

 * How a gradient it managed by the manufacturer ?
 * It is considered as a 2 colors artwork or not ?
 * Has the printer a template ?
 * What kind of file they would like to have ?
 * If it is possible to print artworks as well on paper cases.

I'll do my best to provide these informations, i.e. tomorrow morning or
not before next wednesday.

Thanks

I just downloaded it and installed it. I found it very polished already,
nice work.
However, in Evolution, i think that in the "reply", "reply to all",
"forward" and the "send/receive" icon button should have bigger arrows,
so as to be able to know at first sight to which direction the arrow is
pointing to. I can add as well that the guys on the "reply to all" icon
are not that visible enough as well.

I provide feedbacks in other mails if I have something to add.

Thanks

As long as the text is limited to the name of the distro, there is no
problem.

Great.

'Core n' is not translated, but I think that now the absence of artwork
for a release is no more a problem. As long as you had time to make a
release-numbered wallpaper, why not using it ? It will preserve our
stock of neutral wallpaper :

http://www.isity.net/blog/?cat=7
http://pookstar.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=0

and some other I don't have right away.

Sorry, I have completely forgot you made a svg. I am not used to it at
all but will be a good reason to get starting.

Thanks a lot,
