Nice! Is there already Solar theme for Plymouth or some graphics

There is one in the wiki[1] but the graphics used might need to be altered to
reflect the latest changes to the backgrounds. I have been playing with some
progress ideas[2] but it is still to be decided.

Note that is a good idea to have it a bit ahead of the date we start
counting down (the last release we started counting roughly a month
before the release) to leave some time for translators to do their job.

Not being used by default, the GNOME splash is *not* a priority, nobody
announced he's working on it so far (and some of us even consider it
useless, GNOME is faster enough to start and does not need it), so go
forward with the KDE one without waiting.

It would be easy for the GNOME splash to be based on your work, as it is
just a bitmap.

Seamless is supposed to be the transition from GDM to the GNOME desktop,
yet another reason to remove the GNOME splash... but I also don't know
about KDE.

Seamless *boot* would be if also Plymouth would use the same background
image as GDM and the Desktop (with a progress animation), which I
understand is *not* the case. And also seamless boot would be if we
would use GRUB2 with the same background image as Plymouth/GDM/Desktop,
which is also not the case (but we have the bits to make it possible).
Ah, I forgot: also the screen not flickering when transitioning from one
 of those steps to another.

That's new Fedora 10 feature - start without switching graphics modes,

I think we have at last one mode change, from GRUB to Plymouth (that

The way I understand this, is that there actually is a change from text
(in end Grub uses the same graphics capabilities as the BIOS) to the
kernel mode setting when the kernel loads (and before the rest of the
services start), currently in any Fedora release you can somewhat see
this transition if you set a VGA accelerated mode as a command line
argument (such as vga=791 in F1 - F8 or vga=823 in F9, which causes the
kernel to use a framebuffer of 1024x768 in size at 16-bit color depth),
there is a brief print-out of the GRUB arguments for the selected while
the kernel loads before you are presented with the graphics (the
penguin(s) at the top-left corner) and smoother letters, bigger size,
etc. I'm not all that familiar with GRUB2 and if would require the same
kind of drivers as the mode setting feature of the kernel. My guess
would be it wouldn't since it'd be running prior any kernel (and hence
drivers) are loaded, so it may very well rely only on the VESA
capabilities of the cards, but again, I don't know for certain... Will
have to take a look.

Another Solar Update remaining F10 release tasks (volunteers needed!)

2008-09-29 Thread Máirín Duffy

Hi team,

I spent about 12 hours today going through most of the Solar artwork and
updating it to use the new, cleaned XCF source. I also created some
additional wallpaper artwork so we can support dual 1600x1200 monitors
as well as a larger 5:4 ratio resolution.

The only artwork left to be modified is:

- the KDE Login screen. I don't know much about KDE login theming;
Samuele you may need to update the artwork in your mockup - I think
Stalwart was going to write the theme based on that artwork. (Any status
updates on the KDE login theme?)

- the release poster - I think this still needs modification and also as
mentioned earlier on the list, I think the content should be vetted by
the marketing team. It would be good if it had a space for people to
write out time / date / location for release parties. Low-priority at
this point though, it's really the last task to get done before release day.

Now that we have a solid set of clean artwork to work with, we have the
following items outstanding:

= WEB BANNERS =
- countdown banner (200x100px) (this is the banner that counts down the
days until the release date. Some examples [1,2]) we need a volunteer!
- final release small banner (200x100px) (Ian, can you adjust the beta
banner [3] so we can use it for this as well?)
- final release full-size banner (600x200px) we need a volunteer! An
example is [4]

= DISC / MEDIA ART =
- we should probably go with the simple design for the disc itself as we
did for Fedora 9. I'll take on the task of updating the artwork so it
says Fedora 10 instead of 9.
- we need a sleeve design for Fedora 10. The disc will come in a
cardboard sleeve. Any takers? (Ryan, yours came out great for Fedora 9,
*hint hint* *wink wink*)

= EXTRAS =
I don't think these are 100% necessary, but if you'd like to take a stab
at them please feel free:

- screensaver lock dialog
- gnome splash
- kde splash

I think that's about it. If there's any extras you'd like to take on let
us know! Almost all done, phew!
