Hey,

I like the idea as images but i doubt that it will fit a desktop
theme.. (liked the neon suggestion more) just imagine if you have a
wallpaper like that.. i would change it ASAP ^_^ This is again a very
nice image for a cd/dvd cover. Also the wallpapers i've seen so far
with this idea kinda let me thing of something old.. ancient.. not
something innovative and new (like fedora).

My suggestion would be to go for the neon theme.

This is the reason of having some consecutive rounds, to see what works
and what do not.

As for looking ancient, isn't that the purpose of steampunk?

My suggestion would be to go for the neon theme.

Then consider invited to make a formal submission. We will see in Round

Yup, the sky is always a good metaphor for freedom, infinity, infinite

Great. It's good to start this early with the theming, thus we'll have

For F9 we tried for the first time to tie the graphics to the release name.
But that was mostly for historical reasons: the tradition was to have
the name defined very late, when the distro (and the graphics) wad ready
and frozen.

Just imagine the possibilities back when F6 was named Zod...

Re: Fedora 10 theme ideas

2008-04-02 Thread Mark
Oke let the brainstorm start ;)

My idea for F9 was: keep the theme the same any just improve it. I
keep that idea for F10.
Also for F10 i would like to propose some really polished things (ala
mac os). For example: When you hover on something that is done by the
theme (lets sat the minimize, close and maximize buttons) it's
instantly changing to the next image. lets it flow (fadeout old and
simultaneous fadein the new one) over to the other image so that you
get a nice animation in it. Also the taskbar buttons should get the
same attention. actually everything should.

About the taskbar. Pre F9 i suggested to make a F9 theme improvement
that also skins the taskbar.. as of today this hasn't been done in
Fedora! i made a few mockups of it a _while_ back but they where in
orange and to much vista like (with sudden colour jumps). But the idea
remains valid.

I will see if i can make a new mockup of this. Also the notification
thing really needs a theme (i just like everything skinned instead of
plain).

That are my idea's so far. I will try to make some mockups of it soon.

One of the ideas some Red Hatters had on our bus ride into work this
morning was to code name F10 neon (neon being the 10th element in the
periodic table of elements.) The link between werewolf and sulphur is
that sulphur helps ward away werewolves. The link between sulphur and
neon would be that they are both elements.

It would then be cool to have a wallpaper with a neon Fedora logo sign
on it, when it gets dark the neon sign lights up, when it's daylight the
neon sign turns off.

The general artwork such as the banners and splashes could be a glossy
dark grey with very bright thin accents, think accent colors like bright
Fedora blue, magenta, yellow, and green. We could probably do some
awesome designs using light painting, eg here are some examples of light
painting that I did a while back:

http://flickr.com/photos/mairin/2116954288/
http://flickr.com/photos/mairin/2116954038/
http://flickr.com/photos/mairin/2116172957/

Another codename that was suggested for f9 but got 2nd place might be
good for F10 - bathysphere. Do you know what a bathysphere is? I didnt
but I learned this morning:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathysphere_%28vessel%29

We could come up with some very interesting visual ideas to accompany
bathysphere, such as underwater aquatic scenes or we could go for a
really really cool steampunk [1] look (eg

Also for F10 i would like to propose some really polished things (ala
mac os). For example: When you hover on something that is done by the
theme (lets sat the minimize, close and maximize buttons) it's
instantly changing to the next image. lets it flow (fadeout old and
simultaneous fadein the new one) over to the other image so that you
get a nice animation in it. Also the taskbar buttons should get the
  same attention. actually everything should.

One of the ideas some Red Hatters had on our bus ride into work this
morning was to code name F10 neon (neon being the 10th element in the
periodic table of elements.) The link between werewolf and sulphur is that
sulphur helps ward away werewolves. The link between sulphur and neon would
be that they are both elements.

It would then be cool to have a wallpaper with a neon Fedora logo sign on
it, when it gets dark the neon sign lights up, when it's daylight the neon
 sign turns off.

The general artwork such as the banners and splashes could be a glossy dark
grey with very bright thin accents, think accent colors like bright Fedora
blue, magenta, yellow, and green. We could probably do some awesome designs
using light painting, eg here are some examples of light painting that I did
 a while back:

Till here it all sounds awesome!

Another codename that was suggested for f9 but got 2nd place might be good
for F10 - bathysphere. Do you know what a bathysphere is? I didnt but I
 learned this morning:

  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathysphere_%28vessel%29

We could come up with some very interesting visual ideas to accompany
bathysphere, such as underwater aquatic scenes or we could go for a really
really cool steampunk [1] look (eg

the bottom of the page!!!), here's some more I think look cool:

All nice but i fail to see how this could look good in fedora..

Doesn't theme talk cover everything you see (including wallpapers and nodoka).

The discussion for themes that are release specific does not include the
window manager theme. You should post ideas on Nodoka separately.

Subject: Fedora 10 theme ideas

G'day everyone,

Congratulations of all the Fedora9 efforts I've seen.
Shamefully my work and relocation to singapore kept me from
contributing to the great things happening around Fedora.

So onto Fedore 10 right ???

I was thinking of reviving or building upon the flying high concept
from FC7 with some more artwork.

for initial inspiration: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andyfitz/2366301782/
or something similar http://www.flickr.com/photos/andyfitz/tags/sky/

Nothing say infinite freedom like looking to the sky.
What do you reckon?

 What about a universe?

that's a nice one, but not really handy i think.

A few months ago i read on this list that the theme idea's where going
higher with each release. The balloon fedora was as high as it could
possibly go with the high stuff from the ground to space. Making a
universe theme now would make it impossible to go higher in themes
because there is nothing bigger..

If something like that was done than i would first go for:
earth view
then: solar system
then: this galaxy
then: the local group (we are part of that incase you didn't know)
and then the universe. that has some more theme room for future fedora releases.

Something else that would be nice is playing with 10's. just all kind
of different sizes of 10's in a neon like glow..

Great. It's good to start this early with the theming, thus we'll have
less problems in the future with time schedule :)

I don't know... if we get again a release name in the middle of Round 2
and get the process influenced by that and start wondering about the
  usefulness of the first round...

Does the theme have to be based on the Release Name?
Can the art theme not stand alone?

 eg rawhide Animal Skin.

The skies are nice, but what about:

 Roar=Voice, Timeless=Infinite, Flowing=Freedom

I out of those the following are rather nice...

Aaah, I forgot... Then, is it already decided when the F10 release name
will be set? If we are going to match the artwork for F10 with it's
release name, it would greatly help if the release name was determined
really early in the process, so it would make IMHO sense (and would
greatly help us, the art team) to start with the F10 naming process now
and have a vote just about (or shortly after) the F9 release. What do
  you think?
Supposedly there was recently some talk about that - jump to 3)
  Painless Releases Meeting:
  https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-art-list/2008-March/msg00139.html

I read this thread, but I fail to see if a decision has been made since
  then?

I don't know if minutes are available for that meeting, but Jessie
Keating said that the naming process for F10 will start as soon as F9 is
released so we will hopefully have the codename a lot earlier.

Hmm, it would be interesting if they would pick names from the four
classical elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water ... two of the
suggested theme ideas so far cover two of those.
