Antialiasing the font anyway but lying to the bytecode about whether the AA is
being performed might be an interesting exercise. That can't be done at the
cairo level, though.

In any case there should be a way to override the font's gasp table. I
personally favour seeing the few badly antialiased glyphs than seeing them all
as bitmapped.

The correct solution is probably to write a filter that adds the freetype info
to the font files, so they become normal unicody fonts any font libe can use.

Then the fc-query error can be modified to just point people to this filter.

I don't think Fedora should ship fonts that can not be used in fontconfig at
this stage. If they can't be fixed easily, I'd say just drop them.

It's a Japanese bitmap font. so fontconfig is just checking to skip the broken
BDF/PCF fonts highly likely not having any charset detected? I see - I don't
still see there are any useful cases not skipping non-BDF/PCF fonts that has no
charsets though.

However the assumption as described at that comment isn't necessarily true.
Since it was available before we are moving to Unicode, most BDF/PCF fonts
available in the world should be encoded by "none". but just put glyphs with
the glyph IDs for the charset. in fact, it does in this case.

FreeType is (internally) capable to add any CMaps that is used to look up the
glyph ID from the character code though, no exported FT_CMap structure. if
adding the own CMap to transcode Unicode to the charset, it may works as
expected without modifying the application code. but I guess fontconfig won't
support such fonts so far, because fontconfig and other rendering library
focuses on Unicode only and using the internal APIs doesn't make sense?

--- Comment #3 from Behdad Esfahbod   2009-10-21

Reading the comment before that block of code suggests that the code is correct
in its current form:

/*
 * Skip over PCF fonts that have no encoded characters; they're
 * usually just Unicode fonts transcoded to some legacy encoding
 * FT forces us to approximate whether a font is a PCF font
 * or not by whether it has any BDF properties.  Try PIXEL_SIZE;
 * I don't know how to get a list of BDF properties on the font. -PL
 */
if (FcCharSetCount (cs) == 0)
{
#if HAVE_FT_GET_BDF_PROPERTY
if(FT_Get_BDF_Property(face, "PIXEL_SIZE", &prop) == 0)
goto bail2;
#endif
}

Indeed, in the pattern you got after modifying that line, you see that charset
is empty, that is, fontconfig could not recognize any character in the font and
hence the face is useless. That's why fontconfig skips it. Sounds like
NOTABUG to me. What kind of font is this?

Humm, I/we should add a new tool to report which chars are missing in a font to
be marked with a lang.

--- Comment #5 from Nicolas Mailhot   2009-07-26

I tried it in the droid font package and no one complained, so it didn't break
anything, but I didn't have the time to test it extensively.

I do wish CJK users spent some of their copious bugzilla time on it

Another testcase using downloadable fonts:

Expected result: normal column text is always rendered with the regular face,
italic with regular italic, etc.

It would be most useful if that tool is designed to work on a given list
of font files. (Checking all of the fonts of which fontconfig is aware
is then reduced to:

  fc-list -f '%{file}\n' | tr \\n \\0 | xargs -0 $LINT

where $LINT is the name of the new tool.)

I don't think anyone would mind if it's pango-level. The basic need is just a
font linting tool that anyone can run over a ttf/otf (and probably pcf/type1)
font to check what needs to be fixed to make apps happy. Right now WWS seems
the lowest-hanging fruit to fix, and easiest to sell to font authors (because
of Microsoft and Adobe stance on WWS).

I can write a very small pango tool to do that, would it be helpful? The thing
is, fontconfig doesn't really know about WWS, whereas pango's entire font model
is based on it. That's why pango has problem using fonts with arbitrary style
names while fontconfig has no problem reporting them.

This was originally brought to my attention from by Erik Dahlström of Opera and
the SVG WG. He knows way much more about this than I do, and I will bring this
discussion to his attention. It is over my head, and I frankly do not have the
time to debug this right now.

The testcase at m8y.org does fail in Opera 10 beta.

(P.S. Sorry for my bad spelling. Absent minded while typing...)

Only a couple of the fonts are "failing"
Given this bug, if you scroll back through the many many comments, discusses
various bugs in true type fonts, and given the Tuffy font loads, I'm inclined
to suspect the fonts that don't load are prbably buggy.

BTW, Lars, did you try my http://m8y.org/tmp/testcase124.svg in Opera?
I'm about to file a bug against Webkit.

Re #193: The test case I was referring to is not about SVG fonts. It is about
using the CSS declaration @font-face in SVG files, like so:

@font-face {
font-family: tuffy;
src: url(ryanlerch_-_Tuffy_Bold.ttf) format("truetype");
}

Comment #192 was probably badly worded.

Re #194: The test case does indeed fail in Firefox 3.5 and Minefield. I will
attach a screen grab.

Lars, I'm a bit confused SVG fonts is unrelated to CSS fonts in SVG.
The testcase you linked to, the CSS font embedded in the SVG works just fine in
Firefox.

http://m8y.org/tmp/testcase124.svg
A simpler testcase, also tested data URI embedded font, does *NOT* work in
Opera 10 - I'm actually a bit puzzled by this.

It also fails in Safari 4.

It does, however, work just fine in Firefox. ;)

1. fix Windows so that GetKerningPairs() ignores pairs it cannot handle
2. remove the problematic kernings from the DejaVu Serif fonts
3. make sure that every glyph mentioned in the kern table has a (proper or

The current behavior seems reasonable to me. It's not that much different than
alt text being shown before images load or an interlaced PNG/GIF. I wouldn't be
averse to an about:config pref, though. (On the author side, JavaScript should
be able to handle it.)

@Comment #189:
I would hope that Mozilla doesn't follow the Safari approach. It's very bad
when you're on dial-up and have to sit there waiting for content just because
someone feels that function should follow form. (And, contrary to an apparently
popular misconception, not everyone in the world has broadband or even has it
available.)

For an example of what I mean, try looking at the examples at
 on a dial-up connection in
Safari. You sit there staring at a blank box for a long time (i.e., up to 10
seconds) while you wait for a very small amount of text to display. In terms of
rendering time, that's ridiculous. (And, to top it off, the fonts are less
readable than the standard system fonts.)

If you are downloading a font via @font-face Firefox will first render the text
with a standard font before downloading and then re-rendering the text using
the correct font. This is pretty ugly and doesn't happen in Safari, it would
also seem to be a waste of CPU time to render things twice.

(it would be nice if there was a fc-query component in fontconfig BTW)

Since MS' WWS naming model makes stuff simpler for application authors, and
will be required in new window code, it would be mighty nice if fc-query warned
in its general report if a font file didn't respect this model.

Respecting the WWS model is declaring fields 21 and 22 or 16 in 17 in ways that
respect WWS (only weight, width and slant in sytles)

This way we can point FLOSS authors to fc-query as linting tools and promote
font naming our apps can handle easily

Originally reported in Red Hat bugzilla:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=466678
Beginning with the release of Fedora 7 in May 2007, fonts belonging to Arial
Narrow group began to be merged with ordinary Arial - there was no longer a
separate Arial Narrow family in the font selector, only Arial. The narrow
styles were supposed to be added to the Arial family, but the problem is that
it is impossible to select the Narrow glyphs afterwards. With LANG=C, the
situation is the least broken:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=347200
Regular narrow can be selected, but narrow italic, narrow bold and narrow bold
italic cannot. With LANG=pl_PL:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=320146
even narrow regular is gone. Also, please note that the styles are displayed in
pretty random languages.
fc-list seems to list all eight styles fine:

Bastien,

we need to add a glob for *.otf to the font mime type too, since the current
agreed-on matching algorithm only looks at magic to disambiguate if there is a
glob conflict.

I tested locally that adding the glob makes otf fonts show up correctly in
nautilus.

--- Comment #91 from Josh Lee   2009-05-05 21:26:11 PDT ---
Just curious, what's the status of this bug? With newer versions of Windows
exposing the font scaling setting more prominently to the user, this bug might
see more visibility, and it's silly to consider manually overriding
laout.css.dpi to be a proper fix.

That is bug 489445, that should land on gecko 1.9.1 (Fx 3.5b) soon.

Using the 3.5b5pre build from 2009-05-01 on Ubuntu 9.04:

In these demos: http://www.princexml.com/howcome/2008/webfonts/ , the text
renders as unknown-character glyphs (i.e. the character code inside a box),
after showing briefly in a local font while the page loads.

I assume those fonts are unusable. However, Firefox doesn't fall back to a font
with a renderable character. Is this the intended behaviour?

--- Comment #5 from Brian Burger   2009-05-01 03:22:15

Copypasta from one of my comments on the Launchpad bug:

This is not a problem with the current Gnome Font Viewer, as is easily proven:
1. Find an OTF font file on your system.
2. If you just double-click on it, OpenOffice attempts to open it, and fails.
2. Right-click the OTF, go Open With -> Open With Other Application -> Font
Viewer
3. Font Viewer opens and displays the OTF preview just as it should, exactly
like a TTF is shown.

So I'm not sure how this bug can be Invalid against all three of the targets
currently listed. It's should be valid against at least one, if not all.

(The above was all done on Ubuntu 9.04)

All the mime-types associated with *.otf have magic data associated, so
front-ends should be able to detect which is which by using magic in case of
conflict.

Adding weight for one or the other would cause more problems than it would
solve. So file a bug against the applications that fail to detect the files
correctly instead.

The autohinter already has lots of heuristics based on individual Latin
characters. I'd rather it also handles the issue at hand (that is, if all
input ASCII glyphs have the same width, they should be hinted to have the same
output width also). There is no place for this kind of tweak higher in the
stack really.

--- Comment #3 from Werner Lemberg   2009-04-15 22:15:21 PST ---
It's completely irrelevant whether the unhinted numerals have the same width
or not. In a TrueType font, the hinting instructions modify the advance width
as needed, and this information is not available to the autohinter.

There are two possibilities: Either FreeType gets an option for the autohinting
module to instruct that some glyphs (numerals and probably some others too)
should have the same width, or the library which uses FreeType does this. IMHO
it should be the latter.

thanks for the quick response.

hmm. can't the library tell that the numerals are all the same width in the
unhinted font?

if so then might there be an option or rule to tell the autohinter: "numerals
are special - don't hint them (much) if they're all the same width in this
font"?

i think that would be enough for me. but i'm a little hesitant about where (if
at all) it's appropriate to assert the "specialness" of numerals vs hinting.

and what should we say when everyone starts raising "my numerals are fuzzy!!"
bugs?  ;-)

Reading the redhat bug description I see that you are not using the TT hinter.

With the autohinter I fear this problem is unavoidable. It probably has to
be handled on a level higher than FreeType: If you pass a font to the library,
the autohinter simply doesn't know that the digits 0-9 are intended to have the
same width. As you certainly aware there are fonts containing `old digits'
which intentionally have different widths.

I can imagine that there is an option to `fontconfig' which forces the
same width to all digits if the autohinter is used (probably using the average
value of all digit widths).

Too bad!! I just did some research on the vera fonts. Bitstream donated them to
open source through the gnome foundation. The four font files are broken from
the source...

That means there are no correct files to be found, and also that almost every
linux installation have the faulty files, and of course this also means that
Gecko needs to render fonts even with invalid checksum as in the vera font
case, since these broken fonts render fine with Safari for windows for example.

The files VeraBd.ttf, VeraIt.ttf, VeraSe.ttf, VeraSeBd.ttf all have checksum
error

My test cases all validate for HTML 4.01 strict and CSS3.

The messages you are referring to are CSS warnings for
http://klebom.se/stellan/css/font-face/vera.html
not for
http://klebom.se/stellan/css/font-face/vera2.html
that I asked you about.

In the "vera2" case Shiretoko only loads 6 out of 10 font files in windows
version.

In the "vera" case Shiretoko is generating CSS-warnings for valid CSS3. That's
because full standard isn't implemented.

For example "font-weight: all" or "font-style: all" etc is unsupported by
Gecko.

Gecko also don't regonize a list of values per spec. e.i. "font-style: oblique,
italic" or "font-weight: 400, 500, 600".

http://silver.warwickcompsoc.co.uk/mozilla/misc/nserror?0x805303f4 sez that's
NS_ERROR_DOM_BAD_URI.  A glance at nsCSSScanner::NextURL doesn't show anything
odd, so I suspect the code to create a URL from the resulting string doesn't
like the unescaped character, maybe.

When I try
https://developer.mozilla.org/@api/deki/files/2935/=webfont-sample.html ,
nsFontFaceLoader::OnStreamComplete for
http://developer.mozilla.org/@api/deki/files/2934/=VeraSeBd.ttf gets called
with aStatus=0x805303f4 (a failure that I don't recognize).  mCanceled is 1 in
nsHttpChannel::OnStopRequest.

I wonder whether
url("https://developer.mozilla.org/@api/deki/files/2934/=VeraSeBd.ttf";) or
url("/@api/deki/files/2934/=VeraSeBd.ttf") may work better, but I don't know.

According to the error console, there are errors occurring parsing your HTML,
with invalid values specified for several things. You may want to check that.

Well I'm at the latest Shiretoko too...

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1b4pre) Gecko/20090310
Shiretoko/3.1b4pre

Slightly strange? I tried with a fresh empty prfoile just in case. Same result.

What did you see with my vera2 testcase?
