Hi Minto,

Thank you for looking at it.
You still have several leftovers from the previous templates (defines for
common directories, etc). I suggest you do a diff with the latest
/etc/rpmdevtools/spectemplate-fonts-simple.spec in fontpackages-devel
and try to reduce the delta.

Fontpackages 1.20 should be queued for all releases but if it's not hit a
mirror next to you yet you can pull it directly from koji
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=7288

Also, please rename your package to sil-padauk-fonts as has already be done for
the other SIL fonts.

From #11, I've done 1, 2, 5 and 6. I could use assistance with 3, 4, 7 and 8,
so I'll submit a review for the new package and set it blocking this bug.

3. is mostly just filling the right template in
/usr/share/fontconfig/templates/
The feedback I have so far from the people who looked at them is that it was
harder to decide to look at them than actually use them. Can't do a lot for the
first part.

4. is mostly cosmetic

For 7 8 I'd be happy to clarify the doc or templates if you could tell me
what you don't understand (very frustrating to write help and not know what
part is wrong)

Well, for 7, do I need a compat- package? I don't think I do. For 8, I
already use -n in the %_font_pkg macro, is that sufficient?

You need a compat package if you want to provide an upgrade path for users of
the current package that upgrades to the full font set. Having the main package
require the other packages is a no-go, it kills modularity

For 8 if you do not use -n in %package and %description as documented in the
templates I'd be surprised if it built at all.

That still does not tell me what I should change in the doc to avoid the next
packager making the same mistakes :(

How does a compat subpackage doing the same thing *not* kill modularity?

8: But it does. I'll have another look at the templates.

As far as doc changes, maybe it's just me, but I find concrete examples to be
more illuminating that templates. Could just be my learning style, but I had
more luck understanding what needed to be done (or so I thought) by looking at
the already-converted specs that at the templates.

How does a compat subpackage doing the same thing *not* kill modularity?

Because nothing depends on the compat package, it can be removed, and new
installes do not even see it exists

8: But it does. I'll have another look at the templates.

The problem with concrete example is a pure package is rather uncommon and
blind cut pasting results in copying quirks.

But if you want to look at concrete converted packages, certainly there is no
lack of them.

That need freefont. Moodle and slingshot are mine. Would it not be better to
simply pull the band-aid off and fix all these right after
freefontgnu-free-fonts, and be done with it?

I wasn't suggesting copy/pasting, just reading for guidance.

The point of a compat package is to kill the old name completely so packages
depending on it adapt to the new font name now. I think that's the same thing
you mean as pulling the band-aid (also the packagers of those should seriously
consider why they depend on freefont and not one of our default fonts)

But first, freefont packaging need to be fixed

changed the rules just before F11 alpha it was kept as provides to avoid alpha

forcing packages to go from freefont to gnu-free-fonts?

--- Comment #24 from Nicolas Mailhot nicolas.mail...@laposte.net 2009-02-23

IIRC freefont has several font families inside

So package deps need to move from
freefont
to
gnu-free-foo1-fonts, gnu-free-foo2-fonts, etc

And users need to be upgraded from
freefont
to
gnu-free-fonts-compat
that requires
gnu-free-foo1-fonts, gnu-free-foo2-fonts

A gnu-free-fonts package should never exist in the system or people will start
adding deps on it

I've tried to explain this in
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upgrade_paths_%E2%80%94_renaming_or_splitting_packages#Can.27t_I_use_my_old_package_name_instead_of_a_-compat_subpackage.3F

But I've clearly failed

So instead of main package, subpackages for font families and a compat package,
it's just the subpackages for font families and a compat package, so that there
is not an RPM that matches the name of the SRPM?

Summary: Japanese fonts changed to less readable after update
   Product: Fedora
   Version: 10
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: low

 Component: vlgothic-fonts

Gecko/2009020410 Fedora/3.0.6-1.fc10 Firefox/3.0.6

I'm using irssi on gnome-terminal (Monospace font), after update Japanese fonts
changed, they're now much smaller (compared to latin), harder to read (some
ideograms are completely unreadable). It is very annoying, because I use
Japanese and sit on Japanese channel a lot. The change occured only in
terminal, in gEdit and other applications old fonts are still used for typing
(SCIM + Anthy) and displaying.

The change didn't affect everyone, some Fedora 10 still got old, simple and
readable fonts.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Just try displaying any Japanese text.

This is the update, that probably changed fonts:

[Bug 475743] Japanese desktop defaulting to Chinese fonts

2009-02-23 Thread bugzilla
Please do not reply directly to this email. All additional
comments should be made in the comments box of this bug.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=475743

--- Comment #42 from Ryo Dairiki ryo-dair...@users.sourceforge.net
2009-02-23 23:59:14 EDT ---
Problem:
- Chinese gryphs are shown when you use Monospace even in Japanese locale.
- Some characters seems different in the same context, as different gryphs are
selected according to the following characters.
(For example, the width of the space character followed by A (alphabet) has
different width with the one followed by a (hiragana).)

Reason:

Fontconfig choose proper gryph for virtual fonts, according to the current
locale, and the context.
If you write Japanese in Japanese locale, fontconfig seeks to fonts which has
Japanese gryphs.
It seems like some Chinese fonts also has Japanese gryphs by some reason.
Maybe, they are in CJ unified regions, so we cannot fix this problem simply by
eliminating them.
Talking about the second problem, both Japanese fonts and DejaVu fonts have
space characters,
so fontconfig sometimes choose gryphs from Japanese fonts, and sometimes from
DejaVu fonts.

Solution:

Change the gryph selection order of Fontconfig.
In Japanese environment, gryphs from Japanese gryphs should be chosen first.
In Chinese environment, gryphs from Chinese gryphs should be chosen first.
Talking about DejaVu fonts, either locale specific gryphs or DejaVu gryphs
should be chosen
independently with the context.
This change maybe require huge change in fonts.conf and might need some patches
in the source of fontconfig too.

--- Comment #5 from Ignacio Vazquez-Abrams ivazquez...@gmail.com 2009-02-24

The issue is 64-ttf-arphic-uming.conf. After renaming it to 67-... various
glyphs came up as gothic. This file probably needs to be split into a
high-priority serif portion, and a low-priority sans portion.

Perhaps you can test with the cjkuni-*fonts packages in rawhide and see if that
works better for you?

They already have some fontconfig changes included.

Re: Problem : japanese-fonts (vlgothic-fonts-20090204-2.fc10)

2009-02-23 Thread Nicolas Mailhot
Le jeudi 19 février 2009 à 20:30 +0100, AKanda a écrit :

 Hello,

Hi Akanda,

 The last update for VLgothicsvlgothic-fonts-20090204-2.fc10.noarch
is perhaps not good. (Install by yum.)

Sorry for the delay, I was hoping other CJK users would answer, I don't
use CJK myself.

Chinese, Korean and Japanese fonts are an old source of pain for font
packagers, due to:
1. the way Unicode.org decided it would be a good idea to have them
share codepoints (Han unification), so CJK packagers compete with each
other to make their pet font the default
2. the complexity of the associated glyphs, that make some users claim
bitmap fonts should be preferred to vector fonts at small sizes (of
course others disagree, and latin users clearly prefer bitmap fonts,
except when people are not careful they change both instead of just
one).

Almost every single CJK update breaks things, and we can not freeze CJK
fonts as new releases and new fonts are requested by users.

I can unfortunately not offer a lot of help. CJK problems can only be
fixed by CJK users. We need more CJK people to install various
combinations of CJK packages and check they do the right thing for every
CJK locale.

If you have the time please test various combinaisons of CJK fonts in
F10 (or better rawhide) and report your findings in bugzilla.

Re: Problem : japanese-fonts (vlgothic-fonts-20090204-2.fc10)

2009-02-23 Thread Roozbeh Pournader
Chinese, Korean and Japanese fonts are an old source of pain for font
 packagers, due to:

... CJK information processing being very hard to do correctly. See
Ken Lunde's amazing 900-page tome, CJKV Information Processing,
which recently appeared in its second edition:
http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596514471/

 1. the way Unicode.org decided it would be a good idea to have them
share codepoints (Han unification), so CJK packagers compete with each
other to make their pet font the default

I can't relate these two. By the same reasoning, Fraktur fonts would
compete with modern Latin fonts, Urdu fonts would compete with Arabic
fonts, and Hindi fonts would compete with Marathi fonts.

Font packagers competing with each other in pushing their fonts is not
acceptable either. If that doesn't stop, we should perhaps centralize
our fontconfig configuration files to avoid such fontconfig wars.

On a separate note, it wasn't unicode.org who decided to unify Han
characters. It was a consensus effort, supported by various national
standardization bodies, including those of China, Japan, and Korea.
Please don't spread FUD ;-) You can read about the actual history of
Han Unification here:

http://unicode.org/versions/Unicode5.0.0/appE.pdf

share codepoints (Han unification),

Using unified code points to represent Han glyphs is nothing wrong,
the only issue is the current fonts and fontconfig are not capable
of distinguishing the z-variants, as Unicode consortium proposed.

so CJK packagers compete with each other to make their pet font the default

I think it is quite the opposite: this happens most often when people
are trying to read CJK text under non-CJK locales. Pango does not assume
language preference, and it falls into a mixed situation where both the
context language and the fall-back font sequence in fontconfig (likely
65-nonlatin) play together to determine the font to select, and the
results are

messy. It would have been better if one of the Han variants is the default
when this happens, for example, the one that covers the most unicode code
points, at least, all the characters will have uniform font styles, rather
than the mosaics from many CJK fonts.

Hmm, maybe we should define PANGO_LANGUAGE for non CJK locale, but to which
value. Well guess most points would be zh? ;)
