Mandy, Wink and Eduardo

2005-10-17 Thread Julie Johnson
Dear Friends,

I had some time off from work over the last couple of weeks and it's been terribly bittersweet. Eduardo finally came home; thinner and 'talking' a mile a minute. He was VERY happy to see me (he was gone over 2 weeks) but spooked about going into the house. I finally did get him into the garage after about the 4th day of our 9 day rainfest in the northeast, and I'm obviously thrilled to have him home.

Mandy is starting to go downhill; she is going in tonight for another depo shot. I'd been giving her Cat's Claw and Pau D'arco with some aloe juice in her purees. She has lost a good bit of weight and is having more and more trouble swallowing. She follows me everywhere and cries to be petted and is still working out on the scratching post.

Wink's biopsy came back and she has cancer in the glands of her ear. Her balance is becoming affected and she needs a very specialized kind of surgery, if the cancer has not spread. She's going in tonight as well for evaluation.

I am trying to get them a referral to New England Veterinary Oncologists this week, but I'm afraid it could be too late for Mandy.I was told her prognosis was very poor and the surgical options I was given just didn't seem that they would give her a quality life. I want Wink see an oncologist and let an expert determine the extent of the cancer before we make a decision about whether we should subject her to this surgery, so I want to take Mandy, too, just in case

Last night, Mandy sat on the bed with her paws on my shoulder while I read, and Wink sat on my chest. My precious little girls; I can't believe that I will be without them. I feel broken.

I'm trying to catch up on mail and I send hugs to everyone.

Think a good thought for my girls.

Love, Julie

I used NEVOG with two of my dogs and Simon. Don't wait for a referral. Call
them yourself and explain the situation, what you already know and have records
of, and beg for an immediate consultation. If you can get in for a
consultation and they want to do the surgery, they will probably schedule it
right away.

2005-10-17 Thread felv

It's so hard to know that you may be spending the last little bit of time
with your girls, but you have to take every second you can, and make the most of
it. That is the sad thing about having cats in our lives, we become so close to
them, and even in best case scenarios, we ALL have to go through the pain of
losing them eventually. It's hard, every time. I wish you and your girls the
very best of times together, and I hope you can enjoy the time you have with
them, even though it may be too short.

I have a saying that I think sums up the relationships we form with our
cats, knowing how short and fragile their lives are, with all the ups and downs,
and knowing in the end that the pain will come again, but in between are such
intense moments of love and joy:

"Life is a roller coaster of emotion, you might as well be in the front
seat where the view is good, and the wind is in your face."

I sit here crying as I write this to you, but on the other hand, I wouldn't
want to live my life any other way. I have six of these fragile lives sharing
this time with me now. Fortunately, they are all young, and so far, healthy, but
that also means that in about ten to fifteen years I will begin to lose them ALL
in a short period of time. It's going to be hard. Yet, I know I could lose any
one of them at any time before then. But, would I change anything? No, of course
not. And that is the defining thing that makes a cat person a cat person, the
willingness to suffer the emotional turmoil in exchange for the joy of their
presence in our lives.

It changed my thinking - I'd always heard NOT to give the FELV vaccine to

particular about FELV. Any knowledge of that?

Thanks!

My only experience with a FeLV+ cats getting the vaccine was scary. One of
my adult cats (prob. 5-8 years old -- rescue cat so we were unsure of age)
was at the Vet's and without thinking, they gave him the FeLV vaccine.
Shortly thereafter, he started a downward spiral and it only got worse,

me uneasy. I have heard what you are saying, but until there is more info,
I doubt I would intentionally do that. Maybe others have had a more

Dear Julie,
My heart is breaking for you...to go thru so much w/ your babies all at one
time. It just doesn't seem fair.

I am happy Eduardo made it home. Maybe there is still hope my Charity will
return.

I agree, you should call the oncoligist right away. I know the oncologist I
woek with is very compassionate and will not put anymore stress/turmoil on
patient/caregiver by making them "wait" for an appt. I usually get in within
24-48 hours.

We have had several cats at the shelter that had to have that surgery. I
remember one, in particular, Gummy Bear, (she came in a "toothless senior, thus
the name. Since she was soo old, we almost did not do the surtgery, but she was
everyon's darling, and we decided to go ahead do it, considering all the
risks, we wanted to give her the chance to live out her life. Needless to say,
our old girl DID make it thru successfully.
Ihope her story will give you some hope.

My prayers are with you, Mandy Wink.
Love,
Patti

P.S. What exactly is Pau D'Arco used for??

RE: vaccinating FELV cats for FELV

2005-10-17 Thread Hideyo Yamamoto
I personally think that giving FeLV vaccines to FeLV cats is a very very
bad idea (my holistic and regular vet both agrees) - regardless what
type of vaccines you are giving, it will suppress their immune systems,
and during the time, you will risk it (vaccines) triggering the very
disease you are trying to protect them from or any other disease - I
read an article where, Felv cats vaccinated against Felv, and it
triggered FIP - they believed that the vaccine did not necessarily
trigger FIP - but when giving the vaccine, the immune was suppressed,
and it caused FIP to happen.

Also, homeopathic Nux Vomica is often helpful, again, depending on

Re: vaccinating FELV cats for FELV

2005-10-17 Thread felv
I would not do it unless I saw more than one large study done that proved it's
value
in at least 80% of the cats used in the studies. Like I've said many times
before, I
don't believe in the FELV vaccine at all, any normal adult cat will develop the
immunity against FELV in time anyways, so the vaccine is, IMO, worthless,
because
it's only doing what time would do to begin with. In addition, with the
increased
risk of VAS with the FELV vaccine, it's just NOT worth the risks to vaccinate
ANY cat
with the FELV vaccine. Period. Giving the FELV vaccine to a cat that already
HAS FELV
is doing nothing but increasing the cat's chance of getting a VAS (vaccine
associated
sarcoma). I will keep this stance until proven otherwise by scientific studies.

The only time I advise for any cat to get the FELV vaccine is if the negative
cat is
going to be directly exposed to the FELV virus (like if you know you are going
to mix
a negative young cat with a positive one), and the cat is under 1 1/2 years
old, and
there's NO way to prevent the exposure. (really, not the case very often)

Also worth saying again, ALL vaccines should be given as low as possible in the
rear
leg, in case a VAS develops, that way amputation can be done, and you can save
the
cat's life. Never ever ever ever allow your vet to give any vaccine in the
scruff of
the neck or back, or along the side of the cat's body where amputation of the
injection site would not be possible!

Leuk Positive Kitty - Rochester, NY

2005-10-17 Thread Amy Wilkins
My vet just called me to tell me about a kitten that
just tested positive for leukemia. The owner
(rescuer) can house her temporarily but needs to find
her a home as soon as possible. They are thinking she
is about 10 weeks old. She is mostly grey with some
orange spots. She has had her distemper shot and has
been dewormed and flea treated. She has not been
spayed yet and is too young for her rabies shot. Is
there anybody that could give this little sweetie a
home? I am willing to make arrangements for
transportation. We just don't want to see this little
one euthanized.
