Re: For those who mix positive/negative
Hi Noelle! We had to make a similar decision when we found out our kittens tested positive! We just didn't have the heart to separate their adoptive dad (he was negative) who had grown very attached to the babies! So we got him the FeLV booster and continue to do so every year (although I don't know how necessary this is...he'd probably be fine with a booster every 2 or 3 years). It's been almost 4 years, now, and Boots still tests negative. We've even added another negative to the bunch without any problems! And they share everything (food, water, litter...even groom each other). Flaco is about at that age where his immune system ought to be fully developed...but irregardless, you may want to retest both babies in a few months just to be sure! I don't think Flaco and Loca could've found a more loving, wonderful home!! Jen But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world; You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed... --Antoine de Saint-Exupéry If you talk to the animals they will talk with you and you will know each other. After researching the archives here and elsewhere and giving it a lot of thought, I have decided not to separate them. She got free treats and toys and her name will be on the sign out front for a month. We are so proud! This afternoon MK had her fourth treatment with Acemannan and a vitamin B12 shot. She has gained an eighth of a pound and is quite perky. She's eating well andis playing again. I have even seen her run lately. I've been giving her a lot of canned food along with her dry Chicken Soup and some supplements. She is so brave and so good to get that abdominal shot without any fuss or resistance - you would never know that she was feral at one time.I can't say with certainty that her improvement is due to the Acemannan - but I'd do it over again...and if she has another step backwards I think I would do this treatment again. A month ago she got a fast-acting steroid shot (one that would be out of her system in a couple of days) and a week and a half of ammoxi drops. Those are the only treatments she's had besides weekly Acemannan, B12 shots, and a lot of prayer sinceshe was diagnosed nearlyfive weeks ago. At the time they told me that she was very sick and would probably not recover...that she was very anemic (based on observation - they really didn't want to take any more blood than was necessary) and that because she wasn't running a fever it was an indication that her immune system wasn't strong enough to fight off secondary infections...and that I should think about saying goodbye. She had lost 14% of her body weight.Whatever the cause of her improvement, I am so grateful. I amalso so thankful to all of you for your comments and suggestions. I don't always respond - especially since I'm still new - but I read everything carefully and I truly appreciate you all and I feel forall youare going through. I've lost two kitties to cancer in the past. There are no words todescribe the grief of loosing a dear cat person. I very much wish there were more research into this (Acemannan)and other treatments. The onlyreal study I've seen sited is the one done by Texas AM. It's just sohard to find real information if you aren't a doctor. This seemed to be a good study andthere was a control group and all of the catstested wereFeVL+ and symptomatic...but I guess I would feel better if I read, "Here are some other studies that were done that showed the same outcome". Even if other studies were done and didn't show the same outcome - I would want to read that too. There just seems to be a big vacuum where finding good information is concerned - I've read everything I can find and it isn't much.Does anyone know how we can donate to the cause of testing treatments for this terrible disease? We have one more treatment next Friday and then we are going to see how it goes. I will be watching carefully to make sure she isn't becoming lethargic and that she still feels good. Still taking one day at a time and grateful for the good days.Kitty kisses to you all.

RE: For those who mix positive/negative
Good for you! I am so glad that Loca gets to stay with Flaco.. I think sometimes there are things that are more important in life than just science and test result.. Though felk vaccination is not 100%, I guess its probably a good idea to give Flaco a shot just in case.. But just so that you know.. whether a cat gets felk virus or not has a lot to do with their own immune system as opposed whether they are exposed to the virus or not.. I read that 75% of cats have been exposed to felk virus during their life time, but the majority (over 95% or so) do not get tested positive for the virus as their immune system is strong and built immunity to the virus.. You know.. him being FIV positive, it makes more challenging because people don't know how difficult it is to transmit the virus form positive.. I talked to Shannon who has him at the shelter right now.. she said that they are equipped to have about 120 animals there, and they have over 400 animals now.. so she did tell me that if we can't arrange, he will be PTS as they will not adopt out FIV positive cats which is strange.. if someone wants him, why preventing him from getting him a home.. Spaz was diagnosed at 8 years of age with leukemia. She was an indoor-only cat, except for one summer when she was a kitten, from about 8-10 months of age. Her PCV was down around 7%, and my vet gave her an injection of prednisolone. The response was almost immediate, and by the next morning, I had a totally different cat on my hands! She was totally fine for over two and half years, then had a mild bout with anemia again. We dealt with that through pred. tablets. Six months after that, she had another serious bout with anemia, and our new vet (we had moved) gave her Depo-Medrol. It had zero effect. It's a rather long story, but I could not remember the name 'prednisolone' at this time and could not get my old vet's office to look up her records. We tried Interferon and Winstrol, which did not help. I FINALLY got the info. from my old vet, but was told by them and every vet I talked to that Depo-Medrol and prednisolone will do the same thing. Fortunately, my vet was willing to try anything I wanted, and we did, and it worked again! So I feel it is of the utmost importance to let people know that they DO NOT necessarily react the same when they supposedly should. As for Spaz, she suffered some mild problems and a rough upper resp. infection after this, but she now has been perfectly healthy for over two years again. She's almost 14 now! What are the recommended allowances of the various vitamins for cats and what are the vitamins they require? Where can I find reputable resource material? Thank you for your time and your patience. elizabeth __Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
Re: For those who mix positive/negative
I have also had a mixed house for almost 6 years now - just vaccinate the negatives. Both are about 5 months now. I found Loca when she was only about 2 weeks, Flaco was probably 2.5-3 months whenwe found him. They have always been together and are buddies. The vet recently recommended testing for leukemia, Locatested positive, Flaco negative. Afterresearching the archives here and elsewhere and giving it a lot of thought, I have decided not to separate them. Logistically it would not be easy and I just can't bear to see Loca separated from the others like that. We also have an adult cat who is like a dad to them and 3 dogs that get along fine with the cats. I am wondering what others do in this situation to minimize the risk of transmission to Flaco. When they eat I always keep an eye on them to keep them out of each others' plates, but there's really nothing I can do about the water dishes. I try to discourage her from grooming him if I see it. I usually pick her up and cuddle her instead, which she loves. My vet also recommended giving the FeLV vaccine to Flaco. Does anyone else have thoughts on this? I just wanted to also share a comment from my Chilean boyfriend. We live in Chile where there is even less information available about this disease. He said that we are very lucky that I speak English and was able to find this site. I have been sharing some of what I have learned from this site and he was really impressed with the wealth of knowledge here and thewillingness of members to help others.
