RE: update on Cassidy

2007-04-19 Thread Melissa Lind
Well, yesterday I went over to my mom's for supper, had to bring their cat
inside since he always escapes, and I'm the only one he trusts to get him
back in, well, there was another cat under the bushes--very pretty tabby. We
sat in the grass and got to know each other for a while. My mom laughed and
said, We were hoping you wouldn't see him.

I have my limit on cats right now, but it made me think--if Cassidy's got a
chance to go to a loving and wonderful home, I should do what I can to get
him there. Once he's gone, I'll miss him so much, but that will make room
for other cats who need me.

This cat that I saw yesterday, my mom thinks belongs to the neighbors who
yell at their kids. They feed him in the garage. Unfortunately, I know
these people and they belong to our card club--can't really steal their cat
away! But, if I see them, I'll talk to them gently. This cat has a funny
eye--crooked, but not milky colored. The one eye looks up instead of
straight. I don't know if that means he's blind in that eye, but either way,
I think he should be a house cat, not a garage cat.

But, that convinced me that I must do what's best for Cassidy by taking him
to Best Friends, but also, I know that I'll have room for more cats should
they choose to find me.

One way or another, I know I can find resources to get him there--I just
have to be resourceful! :)

Wendy, I'm glad you posted this. I was afraid I had missed or forgotten
some detail about the situation that made it absolutely vital that
Cassidy actually go to BF NOW. I agree with you, if this is such a rush
and a hardship, Melissa would be better off waiting for some firm
results on the IFA -- preferably one taken a few months from now -- than
trying to hustle together some arrangements to get Cassidy to BF in less
than 2 weeks. Trying to move him now will take a toll on finances,
marriage and emotions, and there would be an even greater toll if, after
all this, Cassidy turned out to have shed the virus and it would all
have been for nothing. No matter how wonderful BF is, by the nature of
the cats they take in, there will, sadly, always be turnover. If
Cassidy is truly positive, I am sure there will be a place for him down
the line. I can't imagine that BF would be insensitive to the many
difficulties Melissa is going through at the moment.

Melissa, I know these decisions don't come easily, and ultimately you're
the one who has to make them, but please don't let yourself be rushed
into all this angst and expense without sitting down and thinking it
through again.

Hey Melissa,

I called BF to talk to Joanie, the girl who is
normally at BF's Casa de Calmar, but today is her day
off, and the girl I spoke with didn't know if she
would be back tomorrow or Friday. So I'm going to
call and speak with Joanie again tomorrow and/or
Friday and see what she thinks about this situation.
So if you can hold tight for a day or two, we will
probably have a better answer to this problem. I wish
they were more flexible! If it were me, I'd probably
wait and not go anyway, because of the costs
associated and the fact that she might test negative.
And I am betting come July 1 if she's still postitive,
they'll be able to take her still and maybe by then
you can get help with transport. This is all so
rushed. And when I feel rushed, usually things don't
feel right, you know?

I wonder if your vet is aware there is a problem with
his staff? You might let him know you are frustrated
and thinking of going elsewhere because of all the
mix-ups and that you aren't feeling secure with the
service you are receiving which you take very
seriously because you love your animals so much.
Maybe he doesn't even know there are that many issues,
and if he doesn't know, he can't fix it. I would be
angry too if I were you. I do expect people in a
business setting to get their job right as they are
being paid to do so. I'm certainly not perfect at
work, but I do a pretty decent job. If it were me
dealing with people and their animals' health, I would
take it very seriously.

Johannesburg - Tests have confirmed that Vets Choice and Royal Canin dog and
cat dry pet-food products contained corn gluten contaminated with melamine,
says the manufacturer.

The contaminated corn gluten was delivered to Royal Canin by a South African
third-party supplier and appears to have originated from China.

Those products subject to the present recall were manufactured by Royal
Canin South Africa in its Johannesburg plant between March 08 2007 and April
11 2007 and were sold exclusively in South Africa and Namibia. The company
said all other Vets Choice and Royal Canin products (including those made in
South Africa before March 8 2007 and products made outside South Africa)
were not affected and could be fed to pets.
http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_2101493,00.html

From Howl 911:
http://www.howl911.com/#headlines
This finding--melamine in corn gluten--should seal the theory that melamine
was added to wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate deliberately to boost
their nitrogen values (a measure of protein content). All three substances
are used as a cheap protein additive in pet foods. With this news, Howl 911
believes all pet foods containing additives of any kind from China should be
tested for melamine and other contaminates. This finding also vindicates the
claims of many pet parents whose pets were sickened or killed as a result of
eating non-Menu Foods brands which did not contain wheat gluten. Virtually
all pet foods and many treats contain protein additives in the form of
gluten (wheat, corn) or from other grain or vegetable sources (rice, soy,
whey), and many of these additives are products of China. I am sorry to say,
but this newest information--combined with the lack of full disclosure from
pet food companies as to where they source their raw materials from--
renders ALL commercial pet food suspect.

 *Recall -- Firm Press Release*

FDA posts press releases and other notices of recalls and market withdrawals
from the firms involved as a service to consumers, the media, and other
interested parties. FDA does not endorse either the product or the company.
This listserv covers mainly Class I (life-threatening) recalls. A complete
listing of recalls can be found in the FDA Enforcement Report at:
http://www.fda.gov/opacom/Enforce.html

Wilbur-Ellis Voluntarily Recalls Rice Protein Concentrate

*Contact:*

*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE* -- San Francisco, CA -- April 18, 2007 --
Wilbur-Ellis Company is voluntarily recalling all lots of the rice protein
concentrate the San Francisco company's Feed Division has shipped to
pet-food manufacturers because of a risk that rice protein concentrate may
have been contaminated by melamine, an industrial chemical used to make
plastics and fertilizers that can lead to illness or fatalities in animals
if consumed.

Wilbur-Ellis noted that it obtained rice protein from a single source in
China and shipped to a total of five U.S. pet-food manufacturers located in
Utah, N.Y., Kansas and two in Missouri.

Last Sunday, April 15, Wilbur-Ellis notified the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration that a single bag in a recent shipment of rice protein
concentrate from its Chinese supplier, Binzhou Futian Biology Technology Co.
Ltd., had tested positive for melamine. Unlike the other white-colored bags
in that shipment, the bag in question was pink and had the word melamine
stenciled upon it. Wilbur-Ellis separated that bag and quarantined the
entire shipment for further testing and since that time, no further
deliveries of rice protein concentrate have been made. Samples from the
white bags tested negative for melamine. However, subsequent and potentially
more sensitive tests by the FDA came back positive for melamine, leading
Wilbur-Ellis to voluntarily issue the recall.

Wilbur-Ellis began importing rice protein concentrate from Binzhou Futian
Biology Technology in July 2006. A total of 14 containers holding 336
metric tons of rice protein concentrate were sent from Futian to
Wilbur-Ellis. Wilbur-Ellis has distributed 155 metric tons to date.

On Monday (April 16), a pet food distributor issued a voluntary recall of
its pet food, believing the source of contamination to be rice protein
concentrate supplied by Wilbur-Ellis. As an additional precaution,
Wilbur-Ellis is urging all pet food manufacturers using rice protein
concentrate supplied through Wilbur-Ellis to recall any pet food that may be
on supermarket shelves.* *

Consumers with questions about the pet food they use should visit the FDA
Web site at www.fda.gov.

My sincerest apologies my dear friends!!!

I keep forgetting that not everyone is as lucky as I am. I am incredibly
spoiled by the vets I have and their dedication to continuing education and
openness to the information I’ve given them from the list.

I was speaking from the ideal in my head that all vets are like mine and that
vets, having the lengthy education they have, are (supposed to be) equipped to
evaluate different therapies and treatments and studies and then be able to
make an educated, informed decision WITH the owner as to treatment.

Hey gang,
I've noticed some potentially disturbing trends in how information is being
presented to the list as a whole; both with various treatments and external
resources.

I think that the first thing we need to remember is that we are here to help
each other and share experiences with the possibility of our past experiences
providing more information for a new FeLV+ parent to have in their
decision-making arsenal. With the high emotions that come with the territory,
sometimes the words that appear on the screen aren't read with the spirit they
were written - we're all human and should try not to be condemning of a person
dealing with these difficult issues who makes decisions that WE, in all our
vast knowledge and skill, would NOT have made.

Ultimately, we have to remember that it is each of us individually who has
responsibility for his/her own furkid - we're not raising horses (camels!) by
committee here ya know. The asking for additional information (experience etc)
and advice is NOT a request for the list to make the decision (not that
every/anyone posts that way as a rule, but you know what I mean)!!
I think that the most important thing this list has done over the years is
create this amazing e-family. My Ninja passed in 1998 and my boys are negative
and I am still here because I love you guys! AND to share if anything Ninja
and I lived through could help someone else.

We need to SAY that X is what we tried and it worked for us as opposed to
saying X WORKS! We all know that every kit is different and what works for
one won't for another and, as with mixing, it has to work for the whole family.
For those of us who have dealt with FeLV in the past or have been living with
it for a time, we may forget how terrifying the diagnosis can be and how poorly
we were initially filtering information. If it isn't said in as many words,
personal opinion and experience can be read as FACT and that's not fair to the
newbies. Especially considering that WE ARE NOT VETERINARIANS!!!

I remember when I first found out Ninja's positive status and I was DEVASTATED.
But I found this list. I found a vet whose own cat was positive. I did a TON of
research, but not everybody thinks to do that or can filter through the panic.
Because we have experience, we can let newbies know, hey, this is a possible
treatment oh, you live in X, I've heard great things about this clinic there
etc. But we should also remind everyone (especially new people) that they need
to do their own research outside this list and figure out what makes the most
sense to them - regardless of what everyone's OPINIONS on here are.

Many topics come up that have been covered in great detail in the archives!!
Searching the archives for additional information on any number of topics
related to our FeLV+ kits should be one of the first things we do - newbies and
oldies both. There is a wealth of experience and information available through
this group and its members.

Also, knowing what an amazing medium of communication the internet is, we have
to be particularly careful in what we are saying about external resources, be
they shelters or hospitals or clinics or rescue organizations or specific vets
etc etc. Negative comments especially need to be framed in the this is MY
experience with WXY as opposed to OMG DID YOU HEAR WHAT
THEY DO AT WXY AND IT'S THEIR POLICY.

So let's all remember to share personal opinion and experience as such.

e.g. we tried X and...
y didn't work for us, but z did
wxy was really helpful (or not) to me when I called for info

Further, deponent sayeth not.

We now return to your regularly scheduled list-serve.

I am certain that cats can taste sweets and that some cats actually have a
sweet tooth. I've had a few who had a definite preference for sugary things.
The scientists who claim otherwise should live with more cats.

To all affected by pet food recall - lawyer needs info for ...

2007-04-19 Thread TatorBunz

Please feel free to cross post:

Jay Edelson, the attorney who is suing Menu Foods and the pet companies,
wants to hear from anyone and everyone whose pet was sick or died as a result
of
the recall food.

He needs to hear from shelters and independent rescue groups who lost pets.

Bear in mind we are getting complaints of deaths that go back to November,
with speculation that food was tainted as early as last September.

So please post an announcement to all of your many groups to contact
Attorney Jay Edelson, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) .

His firm has filed suit, has been before Congress, and will be going back to
Congress and will be filing more suits. We need ALL THE AMMUNITION we can
get. We need to also round up as much tainted food as possible. The companies
are destroying evidence.

So post everywhere you know to post to have anyone contact Jay. I know there
are other law firms involved, but since Jay's firm has already filed suit
and has direct contact with Congress, that is our single best resource to get
action.

Even if they only have tainted unopened food, they need to contact Jay. If
they suspect illness or death, have them contact Jay.

new addition to the family

2007-04-19 Thread JENI RECA

Hi,
I just wanted to write and thank everyone for thier kind words about
Hillman's passing and also wanted to say sorry to anyone that has lost a
baby in the last few weeks.

After we lost Hillman a few weeks ago, I wasn't on the search to find
another feluk, but what do you know I just brought another one home. His
name is Meer (means chief in hindu (i think hindu)) and he is a beautiful
big black and white male. He was pulled from a city shelter and we found
out he was feluk positive and now he is home with me. He is on a few meds,
for his cold and eye discharge...fun fun fun. Hopefully the girls, will
like him when they get a formally introduction. Poor guy has to live in my
bathroom right now.

And now on to a plea
I might have to find homes for possibly 4 kittens, right now they are only
three weeks old but only one tested positive on the snap and IFA and needs a
home. I am willing to foster until 8 weeks old, but can not keep...she is
really really cute...tabby and white. The other three her litter mates did
not test positive on the snap and so are going to be re-tested in july and
hopefully they do not test positive, but if they do then they will need
homes too. Anyone out there want to help...willing to travel and will
supply food and liter box and carrier. If need a longer fostering then I
can do that, but not too long. My husband has been a saint, but I think the
cat I just brought in, will be the cat that broke the camels back (my
husband's back) and I can not keep another one. Please help, I know it's
easier to adopt out babies then adults. In the new york area...please email
me with any questions or suggestions!

Thank you

2007-04-19 Thread Nina

Dearest Patti,
Please take a nice long breath sweetheart. I actually did respond to
you, I just didn't end up sending it because after I thought about it,
it wasn't very constructive to restate the obvious or interject my fears
and suppositions. We're all scared and feeling helpless right now.
Like so many on the list, I have more than a few mouths to feed and
cooking homemade meals for everyone is prohibitive. What I'm doing is
feeding what I've been feeding, (since no one has been acting sick), but
less of it and supplementing with home cooked foods. I'm continuing to
look for food sources with as few additives and grains as I can find,
keeping as informed as I can, and praying that we'll weather the storm.
I wish I had the answers that would keep us all safe. Unfortunately, you
of all people know that is not always possible.

Please come climb down from the edge. I know it's easier said than
done, but stressing out over things that are not in our control will
only add to our burdens.

Hugs to you,
Nina

Subject: an important reminder - sorry, kinda long:)

 Hey gang,

I've noticed some potentially disturbing trends in how information is
being presented to the list as a whole; both with various treatments and
external resources.

I think that the first thing we need to remember is that we are here to
help each other and share experiences with the possibility of our past
experiences providing more information for a new FeLV+ parent to have in
their decision-making arsenal. With the high emotions that come with the
territory, sometimes the words that appear on the screen aren't read with
the spirit they were written - we're all human and should try not to be
condemning of a person dealing with these difficult issues who makes
decisions that WE, in all our vast knowledge and skill, would NOT have made.

Ultimately, we have to remember that it is each of us individually who has
responsibility for his/her own furkid - we're not raising horses (camels!)
by committee here ya know. The asking for additional information
(experience etc) and advice is NOT a request for the list to make the
decision (not that every/anyone posts that way as a rule, but you know what
I mean)!!

I think that the most important thing this list has done over the years is
create this amazing e-family. My Ninja passed in 1998 and my boys are
negative and I am still here because I love you guys! AND to share if
anything Ninja and I lived through could help someone else.

We need to SAY that X is what we tried and it worked for us as opposed
to saying X WORKS! We all know that every kit is different and what
works for one won't for another and, as with mixing, it has to work for the
whole family. For those of us who have dealt with FeLV in the past or have
been living with it for a time, we may forget how terrifying the diagnosis
can be and how poorly we were initially filtering information. If it isn't
said in as many words, personal opinion and experience can be read as FACT
and that's not fair to the newbies. Especially considering that *WE ARE
NOT VETERINARIANS!!!*

I remember when I first found out Ninja's positive status and I was
DEVASTATED. But I found this list. I found a vet whose own cat was positive.
I did a TON of research, but not everybody thinks to do that or can filter
through the panic. Because we have experience, we can let newbies know,
hey, this is a possible treatment oh, you live in X, I've heard great
things about this clinic there etc. But we should also remind everyone
(especially new people) that they need to do their own research outside this
list and figure out what makes the most sense to them - regardless of what
everyone's OPINIONS on here are.

Many topics come up that have been covered in great detail in the
archives!! Searching the archives for additional information on any
number of topics related to our FeLV+ kits should be one of the first
things we do - newbies and oldies both. There is a wealth of experience
and information available through this group and its members.

Also, knowing what an amazing medium of communication the internet is, we
have to be particularly careful in what we are saying about external
resources, be they shelters or hospitals or clinics or rescue organizations
or specific vets etc etc. Negative comments especially need to be framed
in the this is MY experience with WXY as opposed to OMG DID YOU HEAR WHAT
THEY DO AT WXY AND IT'S THEIR *POLICY*.

So let's all remember to share personal opinion and experience as such.

e.g. we tried X and...
y didn't work for us, but z did
wxy was really helpful (or not) to me when I called for info

Further, deponent sayeth not.

We now return to your regularly scheduled list-serve.

So I did it,I brought home my beautiful felv+ baby girl tonight. So far they are
doing pretty good. She is checking out her new home and her new brothers are
checking her out.She is doing all the hissing but nothing severe.I sure hope I
did the right thing.
Dr. Jen said that I better take her tonight cause she had a e-mail about
someone interested in adopting her.I think it was a plot to make sure I took
her. :) Oh well she is MINE now. :)
I will post some pics for you to see her soon.Take care.

Oh Sherry I'm so pleased to read VitterVits is home with you!! The
feeling of wanting to take every single furry friend home must be
enormous given your volunteer work, if this girl had that great a pull
on your heart, I'm positive you did the right thing in bringing her
home. I can't wait to see the pictures! Thank you so much for the good
news. Let us know how her acclimation goes. I'm imagining her
surrounded by her newly acquired harem of boy cats. You fellows behave
respectfully with your new sister! How old is she again?
