Wendy,

You need to dump the cup EVERY timed you use your roomba. You also need to
pull the filter part out of the cup and dump any cat hair stuck on the white
paper filter. I bang them against the trash can a few times to get as much
hair/litter out as possible. Then I do a filter change and clean the brushes
every week or two. (I use mine basically every day.) I wash the white paper
filters with soap and a toothbrush, let them dry, and reuse them instead of
buying new ones.

  Hello all,

I'm sorry that I haven't been posting any lately. I've seen some sad
news, and my heart goes out to all who have lost feline friends in
the last few weeks.

I have a question that will be hard to answer. Really, I'm looking
for thoughts and opinions, since I don't think we know enough about
Virbagen Omega and feleuk. My vet was recently approved by the FDA to
import the standard course of VO for Ember. I have put money aside
for quite awhile, hoping that we would get this chance.

The thing is, Ember is, for the most part, asymptomatic. She did have
an odd spell of anemia (down to 19 last October and subsequently back
to 35 for the last few vet visits, starting in November). She also
had especially low wbc at the same time, which is now back to low-
normal. She seems to have developed a food allergy to Innova EVO dry,
though she tolerates EVO canned (and now Felidae) just fine.

Ember will have another ELISA to verify her status. If she is still
positive, do you think we should go ahead with the VO, even though
she seems to be doing pretty well?

Thanks,

Lance

Re: OT: Roombie-the new Roomba - for those of you considering purchasing one

2007-04-21 Thread elizabeth trent

Tonya - this is was the info I needed. I know most of you know how it is to
live in a multi-cat household...and yes, I'm crazy...but I have (now) seven
cats am frightfully allergic to them! LOL!

My story is that my quality of life would diminish so much if I was
allergy-free but without cats that it simply wouldn't be worth it.
Therefore...besides 180mg of Allegra plus popping benedryl like candy
several times a day and any homeopathic that works...I use the vacuum
cleaner so much that I never put it away (for anyone else in my condition
-- allergist says -- do not use ceiling fan over the bed -- stirs up the
dander -- and wash everything in very hot water several times a week. I put
throws over the couches, etc so I can frequently wash and I brush the babies
as often as I can). They are precious dear babies and I wouldn't go a
single day without any one of them!

The purple dyson has been an absolute god-send. I can't recommend it
enough...it is one of the most cleverly engineer pieces of equipment I have
ever seen. I have very long hair myself and so I used to burn out a motor
at least once a year in spite of constantly cleaning the beater
bar, changing bags, etc. When I got the dyson...I used it right after I
used the old vaccum...and just in my den section alone it removed over a
quart of cat hair in one use. Holy cat dander batman!!! It's worth every
penny and more!

That being said...I'm still considering a roomba for in-between

Thanks Tonya...this info doesn't discourage me in the slightest...just lets
me know what's involved in the maintenance. And everything with moving
parts requires maintenance (or you won't be keeping it very long).

Subject: an important reminder - sorry, kinda long:)

Hey gang,

I've noticed some potentially disturbing trends in how information
is being presented to the list as a whole; both with various
treatments and external resources.

I think that the first thing we need to remember is that we are
here to help each other and share experiences with the possibility
of our past experiences providing more information for a new FeLV+
parent to have in their decision-making arsenal. With the high
emotions that come with the territory, sometimes the words that
appear on the screen aren't read with the spirit they were written
- we're all human and should try not to be condemning of a person
dealing with these difficult issues who makes decisions that WE, in
all our vast knowledge and skill, would NOT have made.

Ultimately, we have to remember that it is each of us individually
who has responsibility for his/her own furkid - we're not raising
horses (camels!) by committee here ya know. The asking for
additional information (experience etc) and advice is NOT a request
for the list to make the decision (not that every/anyone posts that
way as a rule, but you know what I mean)!!

I think that the most important thing this list has done over the
years is create this amazing e-family. My Ninja passed in 1998 and
my boys are negative and I am still here because I love you guys!
AND to share if anything Ninja and I lived through could help
someone else.

We need to SAY that X is what we tried and it worked for us as
opposed to saying X WORKS! We all know that every kit is
different and what works for one won't for another and, as with
mixing, it has to work for the whole family. For those of us who
have dealt withFeLV in the past or have been living with it for a
time, we may forget how terrifying the diagnosis can be and how
poorly we were initially filtering information. If it isn't said in
as many words, personal opinion and experience can be read as FACT
and that's not fair to thenewbies. Especially considering that WE
ARE NOT VETERINARIANS!!!

I remember when I first found out Ninja's positive status and I was
DEVASTATED. But I found this list. I found a vet whose own cat was
positive. I did a TON of research, but not everybody thinks to do
that or can filter through the panic. Because we have experience,
we can let newbies know, hey, this is a possible treatment oh,
you live in X, I've heard great things about this clinic there
etc. But we should also remind everyone (especially new people)
that they need to do their own research outside this list and
figure out what makes the most sense to them - regardless of what
everyone's OPINIONS on here are.

Many topics come up that have been covered in great detail in the
archives!! Searching the archives for additional information on
any number of topics related to our FeLV+ kits should be one of the
first things we do - newbies and oldies both. There is a wealth of
experience and information available through this group and its
members.

Also, knowing what an amazing medium of communication the internet
is, we have to be particularly careful in what we are saying about
external resources, be they shelters or hospitals or clinics or
rescue organizations or specific vets etc etc. Negative comments
especially need to be framed in the this is MY experience with
WXY as opposed to OMG DID YOU HEAR WHAT

THEY DO AT WXY AND IT'S THEIR POLICY.

So let's all remember to share personal opinion and experience as
such.

e.g. we tried X and...
y didn't work for us, but z did
wxy was really helpful (or not) to me when I called for info

Further, deponent sayeth not.

We now return to your regularly scheduled list-serve.

2007-04-21 Thread Annieb

Simms was 4 years old and feline leukemia positive. I had

hopes that he was just a carrier as he did so well for the first

three years I had him with me but he became very ill a couple

of months ago, with sneezing and lots of congestion.

He was very special. Such a big sweet guy. He had this

tender, kind of puzzled but curious, look about him and he

never fought with anyone. He was very friendly with the other cats,

such a sweetheart. This list's dear Tamara found him

at a beautiful waterfront park there in Maryland, along with

his brother, Tambours. She posted on this very list about his

needing a home and that he was feline leukemia positive. I

was lucky enough to be chosen by Tamara. As I told her

today on the phone, I thanked her for giving him to me

because he gave me just pure joy and sunshine every single

day. Tamara loved him so much that she drove 18 hours

(wasn't it, T?), straight, to deliver him to me in Michigan from

Maryland. (She also brought me Sophie that day, to those

of you who are familiar with Sophie).

He was a pretty peachy shade of color with that lovely

target-shaped swirl on his sides and big creamy white feet

and some white on his chest and face, too. He had big, tall

elegant ears that I loved to stroke when he let me, finally. He

was pretty big but when he meowed, it was so soft and high

pitched, it was adorable. He didn't meow often as he was

very uncomplaining. When Tamara left him with me, she

told me I would find that he was a very special cat and she

was right, indeed. :-)

He must have died overnight, although he still felt a bit

warm when I lifted him. I woke up and thought he was not

breathing so I let the dogs out and had a better look and yes,

my sweet darling boy is gone. His eyes were half open but

he did not look scared or in pain. He was stretched out like

he was having a good nap and his whiskers were pointing

forward. I'm not sure what that meant but I am consoling

myself by thinking he did go peacefully and unafraid.

I got a package from Tamara yesterday. She had sent

two kitty pop-up tents for Simms and the other cats, to cheer

Simms up. They are so cool! He was not interested in the

tent but he did want to sleep on the crinkly soft pad.

I am kind of in shock and grief-torn because I thought he

was doing a bit better after seeming like he would die earlier

this week. He was diagnosed with either pneumonia or

cancer last month and had been on two antibiotics at a time

for a while and single antibiotics constantly, along with pain

meds towards the end. He wouldn't eat during his last week

or so but he would let me force-feed him A/D and chicken

baby food along with squirts of water all day long. He was a

bit interested in the window and the birdies outside

yesterday and he let me stroke his soft head over and over

which he never trusted me to do much, previously, so I had

thought maybe he was a bit better and would continue to

heal.

I buried him earlier today with his Christmas stocking and

his little mouse and this cute stuffed animal that Tamara sent with

him, a purple beanbag bear. It was a beautiful day and that

just made it even harder. He was such a dear polite gentle

sweet funny gentleman of a cat, a very special, loving boy

and I loved him mightily.

Here is a link to a few of my favorite photos of him that

I uploaded online in case someone would like to see what

he looked like: http://tinyurl.com/38skop

Well, sorry for this being so long but I know you guys, if anyone,

2007-04-21 Thread Susan Hoffman
For anyone in a multi-cat household, I highly recomment my Ridgid 5 hp wet/dry
shop vac from Home Depot. Cost me less than $70. Sucks the fixtures off the
wall if you're not careful. The only issue that I have with it is storage
space -- I need a four legged table with enough spread that I can put the
vaccuum underneath and throw a tablecloth over the top.

This vaccuum is amazing. No bags -- I dump the canister and can bleach
clean the inside of the canister. It has cut my vaccuuming time to 1/3 what it
used to be.. With an extension cord and just the hoses and attachments that
came with it I can do almost my entire house without stopping. The hose is
extra thick and can suck up the contents of a litterbox, if you are so
inclined. The edger attachment is great for getting barf (and worse) off a
rug. Best $70 I ever spent.

My story is that my quality of life would diminish so much if I was
allergy-free but without cats that it simply wouldn't be worth it.
Therefore...besides 180mg of Allegra plus popping benedryl like candy several
times a day and any homeopathic that works...I use the vacuum cleaner so much
that I never put it away (for anyone else in my condition -- allergist says --
do not use ceiling fan over the bed -- stirs up the dander -- and wash
everything in very hot water several times a week. I put throws over the
couches, etc so I can frequently wash and I brush the babies as often as I
can). They are precious dear babies and I wouldn't go a single day without any

The purple dyson has been an absolute god-send. I can't recommend it
enough...it is one of the most cleverly engineer pieces of equipment I have
ever seen. I have very long hair myself and so I used to burn out a motor at
least once a year in spite of constantly cleaning the beater bar, changing
bags, etc. When I got the dyson...I used it right after I used the old
vaccum...and just in my den section alone it removed over a quart of cat hair
in one use. Holy cat dander batman!!! It's worth every penny and more!

That being said...I'm still considering a roomba for in-between

including human food and Joey being one will eat just about
anything, he is not picky at all. My others I got as strays with
unknown past histories, some will eat a variety and some will not,
they will eat one or two things and that is it!!

i was just fascinated by the part about cats, as a species,
imprinting on food and non-food when very young. makes so
much sense in terms of those who will kill for human food while
others couldn't care less, and how difficult it is to change their
diets. i'm hoping that one of the books will go into that
 aspect more fully..

Jeni,

Wow! You are a saint welcoming another FeLV+ baby
into your loving home. I hope that he's with you for
years to come. I can't help with the kittens, except
to wish you good luck in finding them homes quickly.

 Hi,
I just wanted to write and thank everyone for thier
 kind words about
Hillman's passing and also wanted to say sorry to
 anyone that has lost a
baby in the last few weeks.

After we lost Hillman a few weeks ago, I wasn't on
 the search to find
another feluk, but what do you know I just brought
 another one home. His
name is Meer (means chief in hindu (i think hindu))
 and he is a beautiful
big black and white male. He was pulled from a city
 shelter and we found
out he was feluk positive and now he is home with
me. He is on a few meds,
for his cold and eye discharge...fun fun fun.
 Hopefully the girls, will
like him when they get a formally introduction.
Poor guy has to live in my
 bathroom right now.
And now on to a plea
I might have to find homes for possibly 4 kittens,
 right now they are only
three weeks old but only one tested positive on the
snap and IFA and needs a
home. I am willing to foster until 8 weeks old, but
 can not keep...she is
really really cute...tabby and white. The other
 three her litter mates did
not test positive on the snap and so are going to be
 re-tested in july and
hopefully they do not test positive, but if they do
 then they will need
homes too. Anyone out there want to help...willing
 to travel and will
supply food and liter box and carrier. If need a
 longer fostering then I
can do that, but not too long. My husband has been
a saint, but I think the
cat I just brought in, will be the cat that broke
 the camels back (my
husband's back) and I can not keep another one.
 Please help, I know it's
easier to adopt out babies then adults. In the new
 york area...please email
me with any questions or suggestions!
 Thank you
 Jeni
