2011-09-27 Thread Kathryn Hargreaves
Hi Crystal,

You've already given him the ELISA done in the lab (not the SNAP, which is
done at the vet's)? It's hard to tell from what you wrote. A negative lab
ELISA would prove Felv negative.

Note that a negative IFA would not prove anything, as it's skewed towards
false negatives. Alternately, a positive IFA would prove positivity.

Anyone on the Felv list have any ideas about finding this guy a foster or
home?

Hello, thanks for inquiring about the little black kitten, Anakin.
The original email I circulated seems to have been edited and all of his
information is not included. This is his story:

Anakin was adopted from the East Valley Animal shelter, whom fixed and
microchipped him. He was then immediately brought to my vet who SNAP tested
him and dewormed him. She determined he was barely 10 weeks old, where at
the shelter they said 14 weeks. The next day his ELISA test was positive
and he had a URI, which was causing him to sneeze.

I have 2 other cats so I kept them isolated and this further stressed
Anakin, to the point where we had to relocate him to a foster without other
cats. We IFA tested him 1 week later and he was FELV positive. Since we are
unsure of his age, we agreed to have him retested at minimum 6 weeks later.
I arranged a foster for him, who no tells me she will no longer house him
 after Thursday.

We have many people who 'want' him if his next SNAP and IFA test come back
negative. If they are positive, we have no home for him lined up yet and
this is the predicament. If he can be the only cat in a home, he should be
fine, even if he is FELV positive. He is pretty healthy other than a
virus/cold that causes him to sneeze. Vet thinks he should grow out of it (2
rounds of clavamox did not help, so its not bacterial), as he is growing
tremendously already and has TONS of energy, per the foster. His coat looks
great and his temperament is exquisite. He even gets along with small dogs.

So if you can help find him a forever home, regardless of his FELV status,
that would be ideal. Otherwise, if you can or you can help find hi a foster
in the meantime, this is equally beneficial.

Thank you for caring and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Crystal and Kathy,
I believe Kathy has the tests turned around.  Here is a link to a charting
explaining what steps should be taken based on the various test results.
http://www.felineleukemia.org/felvhlth.html

There is a chance to get a false positive with the ELISA test especially the
new 3 way ELISA.
