Re: [Felvtalk] Meowy Christmas from Harley Brock
A sweet story! Thanks for sharing Debi Sent from my iPad On Dec 25, 2014, at 10:42 AM, Marsha mar...@lynxe.com wrote: ...and the rest of my clowder (the FeLV- ones). Harley seemed a little depressed after breakfast. Maybe just mad at me for giving him the clavamox after? I was on the lounge chair, with Brock on my lap. Jealous of Brock? We all just lounged around for a while, then I glanced over at a catnip carrot, with a long bootlace attached. I flicked the bootlace over the top of Harley's head, and slowly dragged it back towards me. The game was on! Harley always likes to play after breakfast or dinner, but he plays hard - leaping, zooming, skidding across the floor. I thought that wasn't a good idea due to his heart, and his needing rest after his long ordeal. So we modified the routine a bit, and I just pulled the bootlace around the cot (full-sized deluxe cot for humans that has Harley's sleeping bag w/heat pad on top of a folded comforter). Harley began to purr as he grabbed the bootlace and we played tug-of-war. Eventually he was within reach, and I petted him and skritched his chest, and he began wrestling with my ha nd. And purred even louder. Best. Christmas. Re: [Felvtalk] Harley is in the hospital
Marsha- Thanks for the the information you have been sharing. All is well so far with my Felv + , Bean (slayer of dragons). Good to hear what sort of symptoms start with the all to common URI with these cats. Glad to hear Harley is fighting the bug... Definitely seems to be some kind of upper respiratory virus. The swelling in his larynx seems to be better, but now he has some nasal discharge. I reached for a kleenex, and the tech said, never mind, he just ate it. He is interested in food now, but it's hard for him to eat with the e-collar on, and maybe there is some sinus pressure too when he leans forward. His energy level is good, as is his interest in getting into anything he can get his paws on (he was allowed out of his cage while I was with him in the isolation room). I had to keep a close eye on him so he didn't scatter medical supplies all over the room. He's staying one more night, and I'll take him home tomorrow if all looks good. Next week I bring him back to get another echocardiogram to check his heart. The followup costs less than half what the first one costs, thankfully. Marsha- So tell me about lysine tablets for cats? Is there some indication that it helps Felv+ cats? Thanks, Deb Sent from my iPad On Dec 16, 2014, at 6:18 PM, Marsha mar...@lynxe.com wrote: Deb, the crazy thing is that symptoms can be variable. I have been wracking my brain and talking to the vet, and one thing that looks like a possibility now is that Brock, the FeLV+ cat I adopted 2.5 months ago, may be a carrier of whatever URI virus it is. This all seemed to start (but could be coincidence) when our weather got weird here. Big temperature inversion, poor air quality, temps 20 degrees above normal, fog/mist/drizzle for a week. Brock was a little sneezy, but no other symptoms. Harley has *never* been sick before, in the 4+ years he's been with me. I am thinking maybe the odd weather threw them for a loop, and the virus flared up in Brock, and Harley got it from him. But Brock, being younger, and not as far along in immune suppression, had such mild symptoms that I didn't think it was a URI, just maybe some dust made him sneeze. But that's all just a theory. In any case, I think I better get those lysine chews or the capsules, since they wouldn't eat the gel. Don't know for sure if this is herpes virus, but could be, especially since I just read that can cause pharyngitis. And I believe that's what the lysine is supposed to help the most, is FHV. [Felvtalk] Neutering
I have a male 6 month old Felv + kitty. He's been to the vet for all the appropriate vaccines. I have 2 other cats. They’re all indoor/outdoor cats. Where ever they want to be is good with us. We have a large lot, 4 acres, trees, mice, all things wonderful for cats. My concern is that my vet did not want to neuter, “Bean”. He said there is some evidence that the extra testosterone my help with the leukemia. I have never had a non-neutered, spayed pet, I’m feeling a bit uncomfortable with this. Has anyone heard of this testosterone evidence? Debi ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
Re: [Felvtalk] Such a short little life
Elisabeth, Thank-you so much for sharing your story. I too have Felv + kitty of 6 mos. We’ve nicknamed him Slayer of Dragons! We’re all having so much fun with him. I do keep in the back of my mind that his life will be short. Trying like hell to just enjoy the moments I have with him. So sorry for your loss.
