Re: [Felvtalk] Amber's Kitty Palace

2011-04-21 Thread Natalie
That's what we did - we had Eliot for about 2 years - he was so lonely. I
tried finding a home for him with someone who already had a FeLV cat - to no
avail. I started looking around and finally found one cat in NJ and another in
PA (never heard from the person who owned that one - and he apparently didn’t
even live inside, he was in a shed!) - so, Eliot got his friend Mr. Tux from NJ
and they became friends overnight! They really like each other - sleep
together, cuddleThat little condo looks big enough for two cats - I think
it's a great idea to get a roommateyou would introduce the roommate in a
cage abutting this condo palace for a few dayand see how it goes.

Forgive me if this has already been said I haven't had time to read all the
posts to this thread. The kitty palace is great! I don't know that I could have
built something so nice. Have you thought about getting her a buddy? There are
so many FeLV kitties in need of a home and she may get lonely. We kept ours
separate initially by building a door to cover the stairway from 1st floor to
the 2nd floor. We tried to share our time equally, but our little Maggie
still was so very lonely. Now we have been a mixed family for 2.5 years. Just a

Re: [Felvtalk] Amber's Kitty Palace

2011-04-21 Thread dlgegg
I took a copy of picture of Ambe's palace to my vet and he is going to use it
to make a palace fr his cat. Your husband really should think about making
these to sell. Might become a new business for him. The cats don't have to be
positive. This would be a way for inside cats to get some fresh outside air.
I am thinking about enlarging it to accomodate 7 cats and attaching it to my
house so they could come and go at will and be safe when outside.

Our poor little babies. All of my animals are rescue situations. They would
sure
have stories to tell if they could talk!

Amber sounds like my Lil Bit.  She spends all day in my bedroom on the bed
coming down only to use her box and drink from her wate bowl in the shower.  I
tried taking her outide and she clung to me and would not get down.  She was
shaking so that I took her back inside.  I got her from Pals (no kill shelter)
at the age of 10.  Before that se belonged to a pet sitter  (who had 23 cats).
She had a large chain link fenced area for her cats.  I know she took good care
of her babies but what happened to Lil Bit before that heaven only knows.  Like
you say, I wish they could talk, then maybe we could help them overcome their
fears.

You are going to love this! I forgot to mention that we put a full spectrum
light inside the palace. Look closely at the photos. It shows up in one of
 them.
My hubby won't leave the basement lit up all day, but we leave the lights on
 in
 the palace.

It is in the basement. I let her roam free in the basement every chance I
 get.
Even though the palace is 8 feet long, 4 feet wide, and six feet tall, she
 still
likes to get out of it for a while. I can roll it outside but she doesn't
 really
like that. It seems to make her nervous when she is outdoors. Poor thing, I
 wish
she could talk so I could know her story! She is too tame and sweet from the

beginning to be a feral cat. Somebody must have just decided they did not
 want
her anymore and basically threw her away.
I the photos I had rolled it close to the basment garage door opening so she

could see the outdoors. It is when I roll it completely outside that she
 gets
 the most nervous. Jannes

Amber is the felv positive kitty we rescued 7 weeks ago. She was on
 death's
 door
just absolutely starving and did not look well. She had no energy to even
 play.
After 7 weeks of TLC and good food it is hard for me to believe she has
 any
issues at all. I have three healthy cats upstairs and I am  not willing to

 take
the chance of exposing them to the virus even though they have been
 vaccinated
  against felv.
I am so glad I did not have Amber euthanized! The vet was leaning in that
direction. God bless you all for all that you do for our sweet feline
 friends.

Just a

I finally got the pictures. That is a great palace! It gves me ideas for an
outdoor room for my pride. It would come in handy during hunting season when I
usually keep them inside lest a hunter shoot them for costing him a shot or the
mountain lin gets hungry. I have been thinking of building an outside room for
them that they could come and go from house to outside thru a cat door.

2011-04-19 Thread dlgegg
Amber sounds like my Lil Bit. She spends all day in my bedroom on the bed
coming down only to use her box and drink from her wate bowl in the shower. I
tried taking her outide and she clung to me and would not get down. She was
shaking so that I took her back inside. I got her from Pals (no kill shelter)
at the age of 10. Before that se belonged to a pet sitter (who had 23 cats).
She had a large chain link fenced area for her cats. I know she took good care
of her babies but what happened to Lil Bit before that heaven only knows. Like
you say, I wish they could talk, then maybe we could help them overcome their
fears.

She was on

just absolutely starving and did not look well. She had no energy to even

After 7 weeks of TLC and good food it is hard for me to believe she has

I am so glad I did not have Amber euthanized! The vet was leaning in that

2011-04-18 Thread MaiMaiPG
There is a number of things you can put in her water to help with the
teeth and I have a holistic vet who swears by PetzLife gel.

By any chance do you have an old tv and vcr/dvd player? There are
wonderful CDs/DVDs/videos that have all sorts of cat entertaining
shows on them. Two cats of mine would sit on a stool to watch them.
If I was asleep and they wanted to see it, Ebony would stare me wake
and then sit on the stool in front of the dark tv. I wish I had
thought and put it on a timer for them when I was on long shifts. Now
I ust feed birds close to the windows my cats like best. Between the
deer, turkey, squirrels etc they are very entertained. Assming money
is as tight for you as for most of us, consider checking the
libraries, Goodwill etc.

BTW, Amber only weighed 6 lbs on her first visit to the vet a week

LOL. The vet says Amber is over a year old. Her teeth look worse

Even though the palace is 8 feet long, 4 feet wide, and six feet tall, she

Amber is the felv positive kitty we rescued 7 weeks ago. She was on death's
 door
just absolutely starving and did not look well. She had no energy to even
 play.
After 7 weeks of TLC and good food it is hard for me to believe she has any
issues at all. I have three healthy cats upstairs and I am  not willing to
 take
the chance of exposing them to the virus even though they have been

I am so glad I did not have Amber euthanized! The vet was leaning in that

Re: [Felvtalk] Amber's kitty palace

2011-04-17 Thread Jannes Taylor
It is in the basement. I let her roam free in the basement every chance I get.
Somebody must have just decided they did not want
her anymore and basically threw her away.
I the photos I had rolled it close to the basment garage door opening so she
could see the outdoors. It is when I roll it completely outside that she gets
the most nervous. Jannes

I should explain that we have a dog who stays in the basement as well. He has a
flap in the regular door where he can come and go as he pleases. When I let
Amber out, I have to shut the flap so he is either in or out for a while. When
she is in the palace, I can leave the flap open. It has taken some adjustments
for everyone, including my dog Samson. He is a country dog with lots of country
smells so that is why he lives in the basement. LOL

You have to follow your heart. If you are ever ready to try a screen
door--for your peace of mind--consider putting gauze or something like
it over the door. If your are not at peace with itdon't. You are
doing wonderfully and I bet the dog and cat wind up being very good

I agree with you Jannes, it's not worth the risk. A screen door is not
enough protection...

I have heard that even hissing or spitting on each other could spread the
disease. This could penetrate through a screen door. I've done a lot of
reading
and just have to do what I feel is best. I know a lot of people mix, but I
am

just too scared.

Have you considered a screen door between her and the other cats? I
understand
the concernI brought Dixie (FeLV+) into a house with a FeLV- (Kitty).
Kitty
developed terminal cancer--no relationship to Dixie's presence and I let
them
together. They defined their territories until it was time for Kitty to
leave.

Dixie started going into the forbidden territory and comforting and learning
from Kitty. BOT: They could communicate but still be safe.

Wow, nice little apartment she's got there! She's a real cutie, too. Looks
a bit like my cat, Miya-Chan. She looks good healthy too. How nice of

Re: [Felvtalk] Amber's Kitty Palace

2011-04-17 Thread Jannes Taylor
Samson is pretty patient with cats but Amber is a brave little thing. She has
smacked him a few times just because she wanted to and one time he let her know
he did not like it. Scared me and her both! I can't remember exactly what he
did
it happened so fast. I do remember that I screamed and she ran. LOL
I try to spend as much time with Amber as I can. I go down in the basement
first
thing in the am to let her out and pet her for a while. I do the same thing in
the afternoon. I work a full time job so I do the best I can. That is another
reason it is frustrating not being able to have her upstairs.
BTW, Amber only weighed 6 lbs on  her first visit to the vet a week after I got
her. I bet she would weigh 8 now. My two fat girls upstairs weigh 12 and 14
lbs.
LOL. The vet says Amber is over a year old. Her teeth look worse than my six
and
seven year old cats. Lots of yellow tartar on them. One of her long teeth in
the
front is broken off some. She has not come in heat yet, so I still don't know
if
she has been spayed or not. I've had her seven weeks now. So many things I
wonder about Amber my mystery cat.Jannes

You have to follow your heart.  If you are ever ready to try a screen door--for
your peace of mind--consider putting gauze or something like it over the door.
If your are not at peace with itdon't.  You are doing wonderfully and I bet
the dog and cat wind up being very good friends.
