Title: Message I heard a recent crash, but a brief glance (middle of night, feeling half-drugged) left me none the wiser. Later in week discovered one of them had knocked a glass vase off the mantelpiece. Amazingly it survived. Not even a chip. However it had hit a glass lampbowl on the floor--that did not survive. Now I discover that all my adult cats have taken to parading back and forth along the mantelpiece -- one used to do it as a kitten, but then gave up. One of them has also taken to parading along a high shelf that goes along two walls in my kitchen. Trouble is, once he's up there he can't get down. Yells for help at all sorts of weird times. My most precious vase (sentimental value only-belonged to my favorite aunt) was on that shelf, supposedly out of harm's way. I've now locked it in a closet. Shanghai, who passed away a few years ago at the age of 18, was the consummate barfer. We used to accuse him of bulimia. He'd binge, barf, and come looking for a refill. He ruined a couple of monitors with projectile vomiting. It got to the point that I could hear the preliminary sounds in the middle of the night, get a piece of newspaper under wherever he was going to spew, catch the vomit on the paper, and roll back over and go back to sleep without missing a beat. We have a cat who also did the projectile vomiting thing... she even twisted her intestine on one of her bouts and had to have surgery! Turned out it was a simpleallergy that achange of food made all the difference! Madison is now VERY happy and vomit free... with the exception of the occasional white hair ball (yuck). She is a beautiful Weegie and we are convinced that her vomiting is why her previous owners turned her out (we got her from Animal Control). Maybe you could allergy test? at one point, i considered putting the cats into the glass-fronted bookcases just so i could leave the breakables out... and i should have qualified my original note: i, too, will get up for serious fights or if it sounds like someone's hurt. with more than a dozen long-haired cats in the house, if i got up for every hairball, i'd NEVER get any sleep. and with that many long-hairs, stepping in haiballs is just a given not pleasant, mind you, but expected. the advantage to having persians of most any age, and older cats in general, is that they seem to strike a non-combat relationship with things like plants. plus, hanging them high enough seems to keep them safe from all but the kittens--didn't you all hear the sigh of relief back in may when my plants went outdoors and were, at last, able to let their leaves down?
