This is a wonderful site for any pet w. diabetes. If you go to the Resource
section dropdown, there's a link to message boards. Follow the links to the
Canine Diabetes Board... they have some very nice people there who really
can help.

Subject: OT: Diabetic dog groups and life!

Hi All!

I'm so sorry I haven't been able to keep up with the list very well
these past several weeks...as always, you guys aren't far from my
thoughts...I consider ya'll a little piece of family and always try to
check subject headers in what little time I've had to get on the
computer! My thoughts are with those who have lost a little one
recently and I'm pulling for those who are aren't feeling up to par! :(

Recent happenings on this end: Our FIV guy, Chatty, was diagnosed with
lymphoma somewhere around his sinuses...he's currently on Leukeran which
has given him the ability to smell his food...but the cancer is far from
remission. We'll probably give Elspar a shot here in the near future to
see if that helps...the next step would be radiation treatments, but I
hear they can be pretty pricey. :( Despite it all, Chatty's still a
pretty upbeat little guy...I hope he'll be around for a little while!!

And the last guy from the litter of kittens who were born with FeLV
(Chinney, Pips, Charlie, Fuss-fuss), Sleepypants, just turned 4 years
old on the 22nd!! He's doing well, demanding his Fancy Feast twice a
day! :)

Also, I just started my NEW job! I'm now a vet assistant at a local
clinic and will be taking online classes in the fall with my old school
to become a certified vet tech! I love the job! SO much to learn! And
the discount is nice... ;) I was able to assist on our cat's (Marvin's,
FeLV+) surgery! He had an aural hematoma (what I just referred to as a
balloon ear) as the result of a bacterial infection in his ear.
Marvin's not too happy about the cone he has to wear for the next 3
weeks...but his ear looks much better!

Anyhoo! To the point of my email! Can anyone direct me to a good
support group for dogs with diabetes? My mom-in-law just found out that
her dog has diabetes! She used to be a nurse, so she's familiar with
the treatment for humans...but she's a little lost when it comes to
Sammie (the dog) as the hospital/doctor care just isn't on the same
level as it is for people w/ diabetes! Any help would be greatly
appreciated!!

Oh! And as an aside, the vet clinic I work at just started implementing
VetJet...it's a transdermal vaccine method that kinda shoots the
vaccine under the skin as opposed to using a needle to inject it...it's
very cool to use and is supposed to prevent the sarcomas associated with
traditional needle vaccine sites! The only reason I mention it is
because the only vaccine that you can use with VetJet is the FeLV
vaccine...I'm sure many of you have heard of this method to give
vaccines, you only use a fraction of the actual vaccine that you would
normally give with a needle. It's really neat to watch if you have the
opportunity! :)

Take care!

Jen

2006-07-30 Thread felv
Diabetes care in pets is actually very similar to humans. The only difference
is that
you try to keep the blood glucose a bit high in pets, since they can't tell you
when
they are hypoglycemic, so it's more of a danger for them than in humans. You
even can
do home blood glucose testing on the ear flap (humans do it on their fingertips,
among other places). There's a NEW blood glucose meter just out designed to be
more
accurate for pet blood, as it's different than humans blood, though you can get
generally acceptable results from most humans meters. The hard part is finding
a good
vet that is willing to take a very active role in pet diabetes management. (and
is up
to date on current care guidelines, a good hint, if your vet didn't suggest home
blood glucose testing, then he's probably not a good vet for diabetes care)

is the link to the meter for pets.

I have other pet diabetes links on my webpage at (scroll down to that section):
