For the crystals themselves, it looks like we are trying to get the change in diet to dissolve them (which certainly seems like a slow process). They've given him fluids and steriod shots...and finally something for pain...and he's taking a daily antibiotic...but nothing to specifically address the crystals themselves. I'll ask about the DL-Methionine. Thanks, Belinda. On 1/9/07, Belinda <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: What is he getting for the crystals? Re: ot: Antonio
I'm so lucky that my girl Gypsy is only interested in her special homemade diet. She'll only eat from the other dishes if I fall down on the job and don't keep her bowl full. She also has her own special perch that no one else seems interested in invading. I think I did have a talk with everyone about it, but they don't always keep their agreements. I keep her food and an individual water bowl up there for her and I can add homeopathics to her water if she seems in need. I hope I haven't jinxed myself :)! Antonio is so fortunate to have a mommy that is so in tune to his well being. He obviously knew what he was doing when he chose you! Nina elizabeth trent wrote: Thanks, Nina. Phaewryn, What a hoot! LOL You're just speaking cat language :0) What is it about cats being so proud of their butts? Nothing even close to the canine mentality. It's like cats come up and say -- "Hello!!! Look at my butt!!!" (turning around with tail straight up in the air) *grin* I say -- "Yes! -- I see your hiney!" LOL (they love that too LOL) I'm no cat psychiatrist but I truly think that it is a sign of love and trust. It takes a long time and a lot of relationship building before a true feral will show you his butt -- and once he does, he truly considers you a friend. I still laugh when I think of one of my friends from college. She always called limburger - "cat butt cheese". To this day, I can't see it in the grocery store without thinking of that and cracking up. elizabeth In a message dated 11/21/06 17:43:02 Central Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: LOL, I have my stinky boy in my lap now. Re: ot: Antonio
Hi Elizabeth, I'm glad to come in late and find Antonio's problem diagnosed and dealt with! Poor chubby boy. I just spent 2 days biting my nails and giving my little dog Vladimir pain meds after having to help him with the same problem. He's feeling much better today. He has a history of needing his anal glands expressed and he tells me when it needs to be done. I was a bad Mommy and didn't take care of it in a timely manner. This was the first time that he had associated pain because of it. Not a pleasant activity, but you better believe I won't be putting it off next time. Let us know how the new food works for Antonio. I have a couple of couch potato boys that should go on a diet too! You're lucky, (in a way), that Antonio lets you help him stay clean. My Kimba Cat gets really pissy when I try to help him out with his imperfect hygiene, he can't reach his nether region either. Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm taking my big boy to the vet this afternoon. Last night when he got out of the litter box - he flopped on his side and looked up at me and cried. It really startled me. I checked him out well and asked him what was wrong. He would just look at me and make his little high pitched meow. I think part of the problem is that he is overweight (22lbs but he has maine coon genes, I believe)...and I don't think he can reach himself properly to clean. I've noticed that a couple of times and used baby wipes for him. I put him in a nice warm bath with kitty shampoo last night and washed him well. He seem to appreciate it. I saw him several times in the 'leg of mutton' stance trying to clean but he just can't reach. It isn't often that a kitty will make that much effort to tell me something is wrong and so I made an appointment because I want to rule out a UTI, bowel or gland problems. I just feel like I wouldn't be a good mommy if I didn't have the vet look at him. Any thoughts on what could be the matter? How can I help my Antonio loose weight? He eats the same as the other kitties -- the rest of them weigh between 8-11lbs except for Phelix who weighs 18lbs (but is not fat - big kitty). Thanks, elizabeth *Save the earth. (just out of curiousity) Leslie From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: ot: Antonio To be honest - I don't really know other than signs of pain (maybe redness or visible signs of infection) but I am going to read about it. I will be vigilant looking for any little signs from now on. Can't stand to think of my boy in pain. *yuck alert * When the vet tech raised his tail a certain way you could see a little bit of infection on two sides. She was going to take his temperature but when she saw that she knew what it was and said she wouldn't put him through that - and I'm glad she didn't. The vet drew pictures on the white board and showed me how things work and explained how infections can happen. There is a gland on either side of the rectum - and they connect to sacs internally that are filled with fluid. Normally, when a cat has a bowel movement, that puts enough pressure on the sacs to expel them. The function of these anal sacs is scent...and they tend to function rather well in that regard. If a cat has runny stools (as Antonio did not long ago) - there isn't enough pressure to expel those glands and the fluid inside can become thick because it isn't released. Any gland that doesn't drain properly becomes infected. Then when they do try to do their business it becomes very painful. They said there are some cats that just won't go at all because it hurts so much and then they can have blockages. Additionally, when cats are overweight, those glands tend to be more recessed and that can lead to infections because they don't get expressed properly on a regular basis. They checked out his bladder too just to make sure he didn't have a UTI. *end yuck alert* We did discuss putting Antonio on the light formula cat food. I'm going to get my deliveries changed today. Who would have thought our sweet fuzzy baby had THAT inside her? Diane R. This electronic mail transmission and any attachments are confidential and may be privileged. Elizabeth, I am so happy that it wasn't anything serious with Antonio. I started getting worried as I read through the replies to your question, and I'm surprised I didn't think about impacted anal sacs. My Pepper has had them. She is a little overweight too. I may switch to Innova Lite, instead of Evo for she and her sister. Again, so glad to hear Antonio's going to be ok! Take care! :) Wendy Sponsored Link Get an Online or Campus degree Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's - in less than one year. http://www.findtherightschool.com

Elizabeth, Very cool that your vet took the time to explain and draw pictures, s/he sounds like a good doctor with a good staff. Do you like them in general? (just out of curiousity) Leslie From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Re: ot: AntonioTo be honest - I don't really know other than signs of pain (maybe redness or visible signs of infection) but I am going to read about it. I will bevigilant looking for any little signs from now on. Can't stand to think of myboy in pain.*yuck alert *When the vet tech raised his tail a certain way you could see a little bit of infection on two sides. She was going to take his temperature but when shesaw that she knew what it was and said she wouldn't put him through that -and I'm glad she didn't.The vet drew pictures on the white board and showed me how things work and explained how infections can happen. There is a gland on either side of therectum - and they connect to sacs internally that are filled with fluid.Normally, when a cat has a bowel movement, that puts enough pressure on the sacs to expel them. The function of these anal sacs is scent...and they tend tofunction rather well in that regard. If a cat has runny stools (as Antoniodid not long ago) - there isn't enough pressure to expel those glands and the fluid inside can become thick because it isn't released. Any gland thatdoesn't drain properly becomes infected. Then when they do try to do theirbusiness it becomes very painful. They said there are some cats that just won't go at all because it hurts so much and then they can have blockages.Additionally, when cats are overweight, those glands tend to be morerecessed and that can lead to infections because they don't get expressed properly on a regular basis. They checked out his bladder too just to make sure he didn't have a UTI.*end yuck alert*We did discuss putting Antonio on the light formula cat food. I'm going toget my deliveries changed today. I think we both need the tread mill. elizabeth

Re: ot: Antonio
To be honest - I don't really know other than signs of pain (maybe redness or visible signs of infection) but I am going to read about it. I think we both need the tread mill. elizabeth In a message dated 11/6/2006 4:44:17 P.M. Re: ot: Antonio
Don't feel bad. The only reason why I pay attention to Winston's litter box is because I know he tends to have this problem. If Antonio is acting better today it doesn't sound like he has a problem urinating. I know with Winston he would stay in his litter box, sometimes I would find a drop of blood and he would just lay around. If Winston isn't causing havoc in our house something is wrong with him. Good luck at the vet. I hope it isn't anything major with Antonio. Cindy Reasoner --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Thank you, Cindy. Yeah, try the lite version of whatever brand you are currently feeding. I only say high fiber because it makes them "feel" full, so they eat less of it. My Doobie eats non-stop sometimes, to the point I think he has an eating disorder, he will eat till he pukes, then go eat, then puke, then eat. I have to lock him away from the food when he goes on a binge. He also eats toilet paper, we have to hide it from him. Thank you, Terrie. I keep the dry food down all the time too - since I am gone all day that seems to be my only option. They get Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul catfood. They get wet food once or twice a week. More often if one is sick. I'm hoping this is something minor too. elizabeth *Save the earth. I free feed my clan so they have food at all times. I don't know what I would do if one of them could no longer be fed like the others. Your in my thoughts and prayers! Re: ot: Antonio
Thanks, Beth. I don't have any experience with them either - but Antonio is neutered and six years old. I've heard that is something that can be a problem. I'll let you all know what happens this afternoon when we get home. elizabeth *Save the earth.
