Re: Subject: OT - Flower Essences (diatomaceous earth forflea control)

Who can say? :) There hasn't been much scientific research in the area
of internal parasite control...my guess is that it may work (if it does
in fact work) by piercing the waxy protective surface of the parasite
much as it does to external parasites (the microscopic "shards" of DE
wouldn't seem large enough, in my opinion, to actually pierce any kind
of exo-skeleton)...but if that waxy surface is compromised, my guess is
that it would leave the worm/parasite susceptible to a pretty hostile
environment (digestive enzymes/bacteria?)...just my guess! I would
assume, however, that the biggest benefit to cattle/grazers would be the
added mineral content of DE...

Re: Subject: OT - Flower Essences (diatomaceous earth forflea control)

2006-05-19 Thread gary
I've heard that using it for intestinal worms is just BS. I couldn't say
for sure but the explanation I've seen on how it supposedly works would make
me think it is BS. The claim is that the sharp edges of the earth pierce
the exoskeleton of the worm (worms don't have exoskeletons) and then the
worms die of dehydration (while swimming in a wet environment). If the
earth is sharp enough to cut the worms, why wouldn't it cut the intestines?

You really don't want to inhale much of it, but I've used it before on
carpets, etc. to kill fleas. Farmers often give the food-grade DE to
cattle to kill any intestinal parasites...also works well on fire ants! ;)

Thanks Carla,
I bookmarked yours and Sandi's sites. Thank you for all you and
your
friends are doing for the animals. Does Sandi do personal
recommendations? Another good site for holistic/homeopathic care
is
Darla's: http://www.kitsnk9s.com/NatCAREHome.htm

Sandi has diatomaceous earth for sale on her website. I think I'm
going
to try using it for my feral colonies, (on the ground, not in their
food, I didn't even know it was ingestible). We're having a
terrible
time with fleas this year and I'm hoping it might help. I've heard
of
it before, but I'd forgotten about it. Phaewryn has posted about
it
before. I can't remember if there's any down side to it. Does
anyone
know if there are special precautions for using it? I guess I
better
Google it!
