Well...right after saying he was better -- I am just back from zipping
his fat butt to the vet's as fast as I could. I was, in fact, on the
phone with the vet asking about his pain management policy when Antonio
kept trying to urinate and couldn't...finally growled and screamed and
his back end.

I thought he was blocked. Of course, when I picked the boy up to take
him inside at the vet's - I must have put some pressure on his bladder
because I felt that unmistakable warm feeling down my sweat pants. That
pee saved me a lot of money.

The whole staff I was mad at yesterday stayed well past closinggave
him a dexe shot, fluids...and a demerol shot - thank goodness! When
they put pressure on his bladder - they were able to get him to go more
-- and it is far less bloody than yesterday. They say his bladder was
probably low on fluids and he was feeling that sandy grit of the
crystals in there. I am just very glad to have some pain relief for my
boy. He's happy as a clam sprawled out on the kitchen floor just
watching the world go by.

I know he was in a lot of pain for a while -- breathing heavy and eyes

The hardest part of this to me is separating the food -- I'm

I'm so lucky that my girl Gypsy is only interested in her special
homemade diet. She'll only eat from the other dishes if I fall down on
the job and don't keep her bowl full. She also has her own special
perch that no one else seems interested in invading. I think I did have
a talk with everyone about it, but they don't always keep their
agreements. I keep her food and an individual water bowl up there for
her and I can add homeopathics to her water if she seems in need. I
hope I haven't jinxed myself :)!

Antonio is so fortunate to have a mommy that is so in tune to his well

For the crystals themselves, it looks like we are trying to get the change
in diet to dissolve them (which certainly seems like a slow process).
They've given him fluids and steriod shots...and finally something for
pain...and he's taking a daily antibiotic...but nothing to specifically
address the crystals themselves. I'll ask about the DL-Methionine. Thanks,
Belinda.

Phaewryn,
What a hoot! LOL You're just speaking cat language :0)

What is it about cats being so proud of their butts? Nothing even close to the
canine mentality. It's like cats come up and say -- Hello!!! Look at my
butt!!! (turning around with tail straight up in the air) *grin* I say --
Yes! -- I see your hiney! LOL (they love that too LOL)

I'm no cat psychiatrist but I truly think that it is a sign of love and trust.
It takes a long time and a lot of relationship building before a true feral
will show you his butt -- and once he does, he truly considers you a friend.

I still laugh when I think of one of my friends from college. She always
called limburger - cat butt cheese. To this day, I can't see it in the
grocery store without thinking of that and cracking up.

2006-11-09 Thread Nina

Hi Elizabeth,
I'm glad to come in late and find Antonio's problem diagnosed and dealt
with! Poor chubby boy. I just spent 2 days biting my nails and giving
my little dog Vladimir pain meds after having to help him with the same
problem. He's feeling much better today. He has a history of needing
his anal glands expressed and he tells me when it needs to be done. I
was a bad Mommy and didn't take care of it in a timely manner. This
was the first time that he had associated pain because of it. Not a
pleasant activity, but you better believe I won't be putting it off
next time.

Let us know how the new food works for Antonio. I have a couple of
couch potato boys that should go on a diet too! You're lucky, (in a
way), that Antonio lets you help him stay clean. My Kimba Cat gets
really pissy when I try to help him out with his imperfect hygiene, he
can't reach his nether region either.

up at me and cried. It really startled me. I checked him out well and
asked him what was wrong. He wouldjust look at me and makehis little
high pitched meow.

I think part of the problem is that he is overweight (22lbs but
he has maine coon genes, I believe)...and I don't think he can reach
himself properly to clean. I've noticed that a couple of times and
used baby wipes for him. I put him in a nice warm bath with kitty
shampoo last nightand washed him well. He seem to appreciate it. I
saw him several times in the 'leg of mutton' stance trying to clean but
he just can't reach.

It isn't often that a kitty will make that much effort to tell
me something is wrong and so I made an appointment because I want to
rule out a UTI, bowel or gland problems. I just feel like I wouldn't
be a good mommy if I didn't have the vet look at him.

Any thoughts on what could be the matter?

How can I help my Antonio loose weight? He eats the same as the
other kitties -- the rest of them weigh between 8-11lbs except for
Phelix who weighs 18lbs (but is not fat - big kitty).

  Thanks,

had a couple of schnauzers when I was a kid, and for some reason
schnauzers are especially susceptible to anal sac impaction. I was with

To be honest - I don't really know other than signs ofpain (maybe redness
or visible signs of infection) but I am going toread about it.I will be
vigilant looking for any little signsfrom now on.Can't stand to think of my
boy in pain.

*yuck alert *

When the vet tech raised his tail a certain way you could see a littlebit
of infection on two sides. She was going to take his temperaturebut when she
saw that she knew what it was and said she wouldn't put him throughthat -
and I'm glad she didn't.

The vet drew pictures on the white board and showed me how things work and
explained how infections can happen. There is a gland on eitherside of the
rectum - and they connect to sacs internally that are filled withfluid.
Normally, when a cat has a bowel movement, that puts enoughpressure on the sacs
to expel them. The function ofthese anal sacs is scent...and they tend to
function rather wellin that regard. If a cat has runny stools (as Antonio
did not long ago) -there isn't enough pressure to expel those glands and the
fluid inside canbecome thick because it isn't released.Any gland that
doesn't drainproperly becomes infected. Then when they do try to do their
business it becomes very painful. They said there are some catsthat just won't
go at all because it hurts so much and then they can haveblockages.

Additionally, when cats are overweight, those glands tend to be more
recessed and that can lead to infections because they don't get expressedproperly
on a regular basis.

They checked out his bladder too just to make sure he didn't have aUTI.

*end yuck alert*

We did discuss putting Antonio on the light formula cat food.I'mgoing to
get my deliveries changed today.I think weboth need thetread mill.

I am so happy that it wasn't anything serious with
Antonio. I started getting worried as I read through
the replies to your question, and I'm surprised I

I really do like everyone who works in that office.I've had kitties who had to have surgery and stay overnight. The vet would go to the office in the middle of the night to give them more pain medicine so they wouldn't hurt.A lot of vets in this area take care of horses, cows, and other farm animals - but my vet specializes in small animals -- plus, he has a few cats himself. They are very direct about things - they don't try to sugar-coat for you...but I appreciate that.I want to know the facts so I can deal with them. They are always so good to explain and answer questions. When I told him I wanted to try Acemannan, he was very agreeable and did some research on it that very day. They really do seem to care about the animals too.

fat
cats, as they tend to get blocked back there (as we all have experienced it

and the fiber helps with that. I don't think that 2% fat really makes that much
difference between the two.

That sounds like a good lite cat food.
Probably more of a diet than the Innova options, actually. I'd consider
switching, except I could never afford that brand with 6 cats that think they

I'm taking my big boy to the vet this afternoon. Last night when he got out of the litterbox - he flopped on his side and looked up at me and cried. It really startled me. I checked him out well and asked him what was wrong. He wouldjust look at me and makehis little high pitched meow.

I think part of the problem is that he is overweight (22lbs but he has maine coon genes, I believe)...and I don't think he can reach himself properly to clean. I've noticed that a couple of times and used baby wipes for him. I put him in a nice warm bath with kitty shampoo last nightand washed him well. He seem to appreciate it. I saw him several times in the 'leg of mutton' stance trying to clean but he just can't reach.

It isn't often that a kitty will make that much effort to tell me something is wrong and so I made an appointment because I want to rule out a UTI, bowel or gland problems. I just feel like I wouldn't be a good mommy if I didn't have the vet look at him.

Any thoughts on what could be the matter?

How can I help my Antonio loose weight? He eats the same as the other kitties -- the rest of them weigh between 8-11lbs except for Phelix who weighs 18lbs (but is not fat - big kitty).

Thanks,

I think part of the problem is that he is overweight (22lbs but he has maine coon genes, I believe)...and I don't think he can reach himself properly to clean. I've noticed that a couple of times and used baby wipes for him. I put him in a nice warm bath with kitty shampoo last night and washed him well.

Thanks,
elizabeth

My sweet Angel Stinky was overweight when I first got
her and could not reach back there to clean herself.
I would have to take her to vet every 3 or 4 months (I
think) to have her anal glands expressed. Also, my
cat Winston has problems with getting blocked and not
being able to urinate. Has Antonio been urinating
O.K. Winston has to be on a special diet for this.
Hope everything is O.K. with your Antonio.

Thank you, Cindy. I am ashamed to say that I don't know if he hasbeen urinating properly. With so many covered liter boxes - it is difficult to tell. (Maybe I need to reconsider the litter box arrangement). This does make me think I'm doing the right thing by taking him to the vet. Last night he didn't have a "happy tail" - he kept it down when he walked. He did this morning though (tail straight up in the air while he struts). Hopefully if there is a problem we've caught it early (she says, hopefully).

Yeah, try the lite version of
whatever brand you are currently feeding. I only say high fiber because it makes
them "feel" full, so they eat less of it. My Doobie eats non-stop sometimes, to
the point I think he has an eating disorder, he will eat till he pukes, then go
eat, then puke, then eat. I have to lock him away from the food when he goes on
a binge. He also eats toilet paper, we have to hide it from him.

  Feed a "lite" food with
high fiber, like Innova Senior... I find it works, even fed free choice. I
simply supplement the "skinny" ones with Nutri-Cal once a day to boost their

Don't feel bad. The only reason why I pay attention
to Winston's litter box is because I know he tends to
have this problem. If Antonio is acting better today
it doesn't sound like he has a problem urinating. I
know with Winston he would stay in his litter box,
sometimes I would find a drop of blood and he would
just lay around. If Winston isn't causing havoc in
our house something is wrong with him. Good luck at
the vet. I hope it isn't anything major with Antonio.

Re: ot: Antonio

2006-11-06 Thread ETrent

To be honest -I don't really know other than signs of
pain(maybe redness or visible signs of infection)but I am going to
read about it. I will be vigilant looking forany littlesigns
from now on. Can't stand to think of my boy in pain.

*yuckalert*

When the vet techraised his tail a certain way you could see a little
bit of infection on two sides. She was going to take his temperature
but when she saw that she knew what it was and said she wouldn't put him through
that - and I'm glad she didn't.

The vet drew pictures on the white board and showed me how things work and
explained how infections can happen. Thereis agland on either
side of the rectum - and they connect to sacs internally that are filled with
fluid. Normally, when a cat has a bowel movement, thatputs enough
pressure on thesacs to expel them. Thefunction of
theseanal sacsis scent...and they tend to functionrather well
in that regard. If a cat has runny stools (as Antonio did not long ago) -
there isn't enough pressure to expel those glands and the fluid inside can
become thick because it isn't released. Any gland that doesn't drain
properly becomes infected. Then when they do try todo their
businessitbecomes very painful. They said there are some cats
that just won't go at all because it hurts so much and then they can have
blockages.

Additionally, when cats are overweight, those glands tend to be more
recessed and that can lead to infections because they don't get expressed
properly on a regular basis.

They checked out his bladder too just to make sure he didn't have a
UTI.

*end yuck alert*

We did discuss putting Antonio on the light formula cat food. I'm
going to get my deliveries changed today. I think we both need the
tread mill.

Kelly - the vet did check him carefully for that. Also, Antonio had a
wee accident in the car on the way, bless his heart. Evenso, I will be
taking the lid off of his litter box to verify that he isn't having a
problem. He said that the diet I have him on is good for him and wouldn't
contribute to that problem (although it can still happen in neutered
males). They told me that Meow Mix is the absolute worst for causing

No - and I probably should have insisted. I did ask about it though
and the vet thought this fast acting steroid would reduce the inflammation
enough that it wouldn't be painful for him. He isn't showing any signs of
pain - but then again, he's not visiting the kitty powder room at the moment
either. He seems to be feeling altogether better - he's on garage safari
at the moment. It is a ruthless procedure.

2006-11-06 Thread Jennifer Phaewryn O'Gwynn

There's a very valid theory out there that early
neutering of males makes them more prone to urinary blockages, because the
urethra growth is kicked into over drive by the hormones of becoming an adult.
When you neuter BEFORE the cat reaches adulthood, the urethra never reaches it's
adult size, and therefore makes the cat more apt to block due to the size being
smaller.

Humm, lemme find that website.. it really makes
perfect sense, they KNOW that neutered males are more prone, but no-one knows
why... this makes it all make sense. When I read it, it was like a light bulb
came on over my head, like DUH! Of course that's why! It's from some natural
care website, which I usually don't even bother reading because I think some of
them are kooky, but this one gives a very convincing logical
explanation.

http://holisticvetpetcare.com/felines.htmThat's
the one I read it on. Of course, all the humane people are denying it could be
true, but it really does make a lot of sense. Make your own
judgment...
